‘Zhoghovurd’ daily says the companies that supplied meat to the NKR
Defense Army have begun compensating the damage done to the Defense
Army – they sold cheaper buffalo meat instead of beef. Following
the checks conducted by the Garrison Military Prosecutor’s Office
in June 2012, a criminal case was opened under Article 178 part 3
point o1 (fraud) of the Criminal Code for buffalo meat deliveries to
military units.

Several people (including director of Kapan meat packing factory
Andranik Ohanjanian) were arrested in the case. Some of them were
later released on their own recognizance. ‘Zhoghovurd’ tried to get
more information from senior PR officer of the Defense Ministry’s
Investigation Department Mary Sargsyan, but she only said that the
investigation is still underway.

PanARMENIAN.Net Project: History Of Armenian Coins From 3rd Century

PANARMENIAN.NET PROJECT: HISTORY OF ARMENIAN COINS FROM 3RD CENTURY BC

September 24, 2013 – 10:58 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – PanARMENIAN.Net ‘s new project titled ‘History of
Armenian Coins from 3rd Century BC’ is dated to the 20th anniversary
of the Armenian national currency, theDram, which is celebrated on
November 22, 2013.

20 years ago, the replacement of Soviet rubles by a new national
currency started in Armenia.

Introduction of the Dram played a key role in the establishment of an
independent state. Despite the hardships Armenia experienced in the
1990s, these were the years when the foundation for Armenian statehood
and financial structures, including the banking system, was laid.

Armenian dram was put into circulation at AMD 14,5 to USD 1. With a
shift to a floating rate policy, the exchange rate soared by 5 times
to comprise AMD 75 to USD 1 by the yearend. Presently, Armenia retains
the floating rate policy, with the exchange rate of AMD 406.17 to
USD 1 as of September 23, 2013.

By the decree of the government, November 22, along with the birthday
of Armenian Dram, also marks the Day of Banking System Employee.

PanARMENIAN.Net jointly with the Central Bank of Armenia (CBA)
implemented the unique project to present the rich history of money
circulation, as well as the collection of coins and bank notes in
possession of the CBA to its readers.

The project was carried out in collaboration with HSBC Bank Armenia
thanks to its experience in national currency backing in different
countries of the world.

HSBC Global Archives is home to a diverse collection of the bank’s
history spanning two centuries, including all of the historic bank
notes issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, The
Mercantile Bank of India, and The British Bank of the Middle East.

Also held at the archives are examples of coinage and earlier types
of currency such as silver sycee, as well as ornate albums of notes,
hand painted design plates, and correspondence with banknote engravers
that reveal the story behind the bank’s long history of issuing money.

HSBC’s collection of banknotes issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai
Banking Corporation runs from 1866 into the 1990s. Afterwards,
the responsibility for note issuing was gradually transferred to
governments in the Straits, Japan and Thailand, with the Corporation
retaining its role in Hong Kong.

HSBC was born from one small idea – a local bank serving international
needs. The bank opened for business in Hong Kong on March 3, 1865.

Entering Armenia in the mid-90s, HSBC was the first international bank
and the largest international investor in the country. HSBC played
an increasingly important role in the establishment and development
of the banking system in Armenia by integrating international banking
and customer service standards and technology and by working side by
side with the government and regulators.

CHORRORD ISHKHANUTYUN: MATURING CONFLICT AT ARMENIA’S MINISTRY OF ECONOMY

09:46 ~U 24.09.13

The paper says it has learned from sources about a maturing conflict
at the Ministry of Economy of Armenia.

Minister Vahram Avanesyan has reportedly remained discontent with the
fact his first deputy, Karine Minasyan, is coordinating the activities
of the commission tasked with elaborating the procedures of Armenia’s
accession to the Eurasian Customs Union.

The minister has complained that such a decision means giving him an
inferior role, says the paper.

Minasyan, who has close close connections with Prime Minister Tigran
Sargsyan, is known for her ambitions of becoming a minister, says the
paper. Both she and Mr Avanesyan are known as champions of pro-Western
policies in the government, but with the Customs Union deal being on
the agenda, they know seem to be taking a bet to see who will be the
first to serve the Russians, adds the paper.

affaire.

Tourist drowns in sea off Al Khan beach

Sharjah Police urge visitors to take heed of warning signs

By Aghaddir Ali, Staff Reporter

Sharjah: An elderly tourist visiting Al Khan beach drowned on Sunday morning.

A Sharjah Police official said the police operations room received a
notification about an Armenian woman who was in difficulty.

The emergency services went to the scene but the 75-year-old woman was
already dead. Her body was taken to Kuwaiti Hospital and later to the
forensic laboratory for an autopsy.

Sharjah Police said those who insist on swimming in the sea should pay
heed to warnings about which stretches are dangerous – for instance,
beaches with rocks or rip currents.

They advised swimmers to be extra careful during high wind or bad
weather conditions and to avoid dangerous places.

Al Khan beach has several signs urging beach-goers not to swim in
rough weather or places with currents but many ignore them.

In March Sharjah Police launched a safety campaign to warn residents
and tourists about the potential dangers of going to the beach during
the summer.

Lieutenant Colonel Yousuf Bin Harmol, director of Buhairah police
station in Sharjah, said the `Safety First’ initiative was discussed
in a meeting with officers and hotel directors and representatives.

Police called for a specialised sea police unit and new legislation to
protect swimmers after dozens of people drowned at beaches last
summer.

Officers said some of the victims had ignored signs that warn people
about currents.

The new initiative aimed to prevent swimmers from entering dangerous
water to reduce the number of deaths.

Directions and guidance were given to the hotel directors and their
representatives about how to deal with emergency cases and problems
and how to find appropriate solutions.
