INTERNATIONAL CRISIS GROUP: SITUATION ON CONTACT LINE OF AZERBAIJANI AND ARMENIAN TROOPS ESCALATED

Trend, Azerbaijan
Feb 4 2014

Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb. 4
By Sabina Ahmadova – Trend:

The situation on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops
has escalated, according to the International Crisis Group’s bulletin.

The organization stressed that the officials and media representatives
from both sides began using the hostile rhetoric and blaming each
other over the violence since the tensions on the frontline began to
escalate on Jan. 20.

The Co-Chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group expressed their deep concern
over continued violence in the region and urged the sides to cease the
hostilities, the OSCE Minsk Group said following a meeting between
Azerbaijani and Armenian Foreign Ministers Elmar Mammadyarov and
Edward Nalbandian in Paris on Jan. 24.

The recent situation on the frontline has remained tense.

Most ceasefire violations are being observed in the Fizuli, Agdam,
Terter, Goranboy, Khojavand, Jabrail regions, spokesman for the
Defense Ministry, Lieutenant-Colonel Vagif Dargahli told Trend earlier.

Dargahli stressed that the number of ceasefire violations has recently
increased. The ceasefire was violated 1,380 times from Jan. 21-29.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are
currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

2013 marked a milestone anniversary: the 110th birthday of the great
Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian. In Beirut, AGBU Lebanon celebrated
through a special evening organized in collaboration with the Armenian
Embassy. The commemorative event, which featured musical performances
and an exclusive film screening, drew over 400 attendees to the local
AGBU Demirdjian Center.

Several distinguished guests filled the center to pay tribute
to the Armenian icon. Among those in the audience were Archbishop
Kegham Khatcherian; Members of Parliament Shant Chinchinian and Jean
Oghassabian; ambassadors from Argentina, Malta and Russia; as well
as representatives of the Czech Republic, German and Ukraine Embassies.

AGBU Lebanon District Committee president Gerard Tufenkjian, and AGBU
benefactors Avedis and Rita Demirdjian and Sarkis and Seta Demirdjian
were present. AGBU-AYA chair Vicken Tchertchian was also in attendance.

Anita Lebiar, the AGBU Lebanon executive director, welcomed the
crowd, stating, ³We are so pleased to see such a wonderful turnout
here tonight. Your presence shows that though it has been over a
century since Khachaturian¹s birth, and decades since his death,
his music continues to live on in each and every one of us today.

Following opening remarks by honored guest Ashot Kocharian, Armenia’s
Ambassador to Lebanon, presentations brought Khachaturian¹s work to
life. Documentary footage acquired from the Aram Khachaturian Museum in
Armenia, and a discussion by Harout Fazlian, the principal conductor
and the artistic director of the Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra,
highlighted Khachaturian¹s countless contributions to the arts.

Pianists Armen and Suzanne Ketchek and violinist Boris Mirzoyan
performed some of Khachaturian¹s beloved compositions. Waltz from
“Masquerade”; “Sabre Dance” from his ballet “Gayaneh”; and “Adagio of
Spartacus” and “Phrygia” from his ballet “Spartacus” all drew rounds
of applause. In the reception that followed, guests looked back on
their favorite Khachaturian symphonies, concertos and film scores,
all of which helped make him a legend.

Head of the Armenian National Congress (ANC) parliamentary group Levon
Zurabyan spoke of the four non-coalition parliamentary forces’ proposal
to set up an ad hoc committee on the Armenian-Russian gas agreements.

He expects the ruling majority to “speak straight about the notorious
crimes, peculation and plunder.”

“We only want to know the truth. How is it that the cheapest gas in
the world is supplied to people at the highest price in the world? I
was shocked when I got my gas bill. But people get even bigger shock
when they realize the high price is the result of the authorities’
incompetence and corruption,” Zurabyan said.

L’EX-MINISTRE GEORGIEN KEZERACHVILI REMIS EN LIBERTE SOUS BRACELET ELECTRONIQUE

FRANCE

AIX-EN-PROVENCE, 03 fev 2014 (AFP) – L’ex-ministre georgien David
