Expulsion of Christians a ‘crime against humanity,’ Mosul bishop says

On: 7/23/2014, By Carol Glatz , In: World

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — Backed up by death threats and property
seizures, the expulsion of the entire Christian community from Mosul
is “a crime against humanity,” said an archbishop from Mosul.

Chaldean Archbishop Amel Shamon Nona said the Islamic State, which
took control of Iraq’s second-largest city in early June, is carrying
out “religious cleansing.”

“It’s an ugly word, but it is what happened and is happening,” he told
Vatican Radio July 22.

Iraq’s Christian leaders are tired of people making appeals and
declarations about their plight without backing up their words with
real action, the archbishop said.

“Words do nothing today,” he said.

Support and prayers are needed, he said, but “we also expect all
Christians to show solidarity with concrete action” and “without being
afraid to talk about this tragedy.”

Chaldean Auxiliary Bishop Shlemon Warduni of Baghdad said: “We need
action first. The world is not bothering with what is happening to
Christians in Mosul.”

The world’s leaders, including those of the United States, must live
up to stated commitment to promoting what is good, he told Catholic
News Service by telephone July 23.

“They must do something, because they can,” he said.

The international community must help those being displaced, not
because they are Christians, but because they are human beings, he
said. Because it overthrew Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein, the United
States in particular must be asked: “Where are the human rights? Where
is the democracy?” he said.

Bishop Warduni called for a complete end to selling weapons to Islamic
State fighters.

“There are no words to describe them,” he said. “They have no
conscience, no religion. Even though they talk about God, they don’t
know God,” he said of the militant group that has declared a caliphate
— a state governed by a religious leader.

The militants forced thousands of Christians from their homes, seizing
their property and then robbed them of their belongings at checkpoints
as they fled the city.

Bishop Warduni said, “They take everything, even a wedding ring from a
widow, medicine from the hands of a small child, they just (pour) it
on the ground.”

The militants confiscated the cars people were fleeing in, he said,
forcing the occupants, including “small children, old people, sick
people, to walk on foot in 48-degree (118 Fahrenheit) heat.”

Bishop Warduni was one of a number of Iraqi Christian bishops who
gathered in Ankawa, a northern town near Irbil, July 21-22 to talk
about the crisis unfolding in Mosul with representatives from the
United Nations, UNICEF, Caritas and local government leaders.

At the end of the two-day meeting, Chaldean Patriarch Louis Raphael
Sako and bishops from the Chaldean, Syriac Orthodox, Syriac Catholic
and Armenian churches called on the Iraqi government to “stop the
catastrophe” and guarantee the “necessary protection” needed for
Christians and other minorities being targeted by the fighters.

“A crime is a crime, and it cannot be denied or justified. We expect
concrete actions to assure our people, not just press releases of
denunciation and condemnation,” the statement said.

The bishops also called on the Iraqi government to provide basic
services, housing, schools, aid and financial support to those who
have been forced from their homes and livelihoods. They thanked the
regional Kurdish government for its hospitality and willingness to
protect fleeing families.

Meanwhile, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, representing 57
Muslim countries, condemned the forced displacements in Mosul and
called the action “a crime that cannot be tolerated.”

“The practices of the Islamic State have nothing to do with Islam and
its principles that call for justice, fairness, freedom of faith and
coexistence,” the organization said in a press release July 21.

According to a recent report by the Christian Aid Program, CAPNI, all
churches and monasteries in Mosul, numbering around 30 structures,
were confiscated and are under the Islamic State’s control.

Crosses were removed from Christian places of worship, which, in many
cases, were then looted, burned, destroyed or occupied by the militant
group.

Shiite mosques also were demolished and all Sunni, Shiite and
Christian tombs in the city were destroyed, too, the report said.

Such destruction was endangering many of the nation’s ancient
historical, cultural and religious sites, including the tomb of Jonah,
which reportedly was broken into in mid-July, the report said.

All non-Sunni communities living in Mosul were being targeted, it
said, including Shiite Muslims.

Those who escaped Mosul and found shelter in surrounding villages were
still facing hardship, it said, as the Islamic State cut off electric
and water supplies to neighboring villages.

There is no drinking water in some areas and the Islamic State was
preventing medicine and other hospital supplies from getting past the
areas it controls.

The fighters also closed the city’s banks, CAPNI reported, so many
people who want to leave Mosul were delaying their departure because
they couldn’t access their own bank accounts and they couldn’t find
buyers for their homes given the “frozen” housing market, it said.

Most city services have “totally collapsed” and the private sector is
“almost paralyzed,” it said.

Edward Nalbandian: Unlike Azerbaijan, Armenia has been consistently

by Marianna Lazarian

ARMINFO
Wednesday, July 23, 16:30

Unlike Azerbaijan, Armenia has been consistently proving its
adherence to the principles of international law, in particular,
non-use of force, peoples’ right for self-determination and
territorial integrity principle, Armenia’s Foreign Minister, Edward
Nalbandian, said at the meeting of foreign ministers of the EU Eastern
Partnership countries, in Brussels on 22 July.

He expressed regret for non-availability of the political will in
Azerbaijan, reflected in declining of all the proposals made by the
intermediaries. “We fully agree to the necessity of preparing the
peoples to peace. Unfortunately, Azerbaijan goes the opposite way,
coming forward with militaristic and provocative statements,
propagating intolerance and hatred. This results in raising of tension
and worsening of the situation at the line of contact with Karabakh
and at the border to Armenia. We highly appreciate assistance of the
European Union and the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group directed only
at peaceful resolving of the Karabakh conflict”, – Nalbandian said.

To note, Catherine Ashton, the High Representative of the Union for
Foreign Affairs and Security Policy for the European Union, and Stepan
Fule, the European Commissioner for Enlargement and European
Neighbourhood Policy, took part in the meeting.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), which has a
mission to aid the population in border communities, is ready to
ensure its presence in Armenia’s northern region of Tavush in the
harvesting season in case it receives corresponding guarantees.

In comments to Tert.am, a spokesperson for the ICRC Yerevan office,
Zara Amatuni, confirmed the organization’s willingness to provide
assistance to Tavush, addressing an earlier request by residents of
the region’s border villages.

“Whenever there is a request by the local government or the
population, we try to negotiate guarantees with the state authorities,
so to say, to enable the population to carry out their work for the
given time period. And that’s not just guarantees; based on available
arrangements, the Red Cross ensures its physical presence there, with
its car and employees. That’s a sign for the military contingent that
the Red Cross is there with its emblem,” Amatuni said, adding that the
mission will be in the region’s border areas in case of corresponding
agreements

The spokesperson added that the organization itself encourages the
residents to propose such initiatives and be more active.

“Because we focus our work on village communities close to an
international borderline and because that bears a frequent character,
we also conduct repairs of waterline as a result of dialogues and
evaluation of needs,” she added.

The governor of Tavush, Hovik Abovyan, also stressed the need of the
mission’s presence in their border communities. “We want them to only
ensure their presence to enable the population to collect the harvest.
We crop mostly grain and cornfields … that’s it,” he said, adding that
the harvesting in the region is already under way.

Mika-Cement, the Hrazdan Cement Factory formerly belonging to Armavia
founder Mika Baghdasarov, is said to have a new owner.

Citing its sources, the paper says that a former minister of defense,
Gagik Melkonyan, has purchased the plant. Speaking to Zhoghovurd,
Melkonyan admitted that he is going to personally follow the company’s
work. “I may not be a chief, but [the plant] will be under my control
not to face the fate it did,” he told the paper.

The former deputy minister added that the new owners are going to
return all debts accumulated over the course of years and give the
personnel their unpaid salaries.

The paper notes that Melkonyan was sacked from office ahead of the
March 2008 tragic post-electoral turmoil (after first President and
current opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan declared that the deputy
minister had joined his campaign to contest the outcome of the
presidential polls).

BAKU: More Azerbaijani students to study abroad at state’s expense

More Azerbaijani students to study abroad at state’s expense

22 July 2014, 18:34 (GMT+05:00)
By Jamila Babayeva

Azerbaijan will increase the number of students studying abroad at
state’s expense.

The news was announced by Education Minister Mikayil Jabbarov at the
first meeting with the students whose nominees were approved by the
Education Commission under the Azerbaijani President for studying in
foreign universities as part of a state program.

“The number of Azerbaijani students studying abroad at state’s expense
will reach to three thousands In the 2014-2015 academic year. The
project would be carried out as part of the state program on education
of Azerbaijani youth abroad in 2007-2015,” he said.

Jabbarov said a group of students selected by the Education Commission
would continue their education in the Great Britain, Turkey,
Switzerland, Canada, Germany, Poland, France, USA, Italy, the Russian
Federation and other foreign countries on Bachelor, Masters,
Doctorate, and PhD degree.

Jabbarov further noted that the mentioned state program is expanding
and today every Azerbaijani citizen has a right to use it.

“I am confident that after completing your studying, you will play an
important role in the development of our society,” he said. “You have
proven your competitiveness in a globalizing world by entering foreign
universities. But it is not enough for further success in the future.
The achievement of the goal requires hard works and efforts. You have
to work diligently on yourself to achieve the desired.”

Jabbarov went on to say that Azerbaijan is one of the few countries,
which implements educational programs covering spending on education,
as well as living abroad.

He underlined that one of the main conditions for participation in the
state program is high academic performance.

Jabbarov said during studying abroad each student should remain in
contact with the Azerbaijani embassies in the respective states.

“Today, Armenia spreads worldwide distorted information about the
history, the realities of Azerbaijan, and the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict,” he noted. “Each Azerbaijani student studying abroad can
contribute to conveying Azerbaijani realities to the world’s
community.”

To date 2,612 students were sent abroad within the state program on
education of Azerbaijani youth abroad in 2007-2015. Graduates of this
program successfully continue their activities in the private and
public sectors.

Yerevan hopes Georgian authorities to punish guilty of attacking
Armenian priests in Tbilisi

YEREVAN. July 21

Yerevan expects an unbiased investigation of the case regarding the
attack on priests of the Armenian Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin in
Georgia’s capital Tbilisi, the Armenian Foreign Ministry said.

“We expect an unbiased investigation and those guilty be punished as
quickly as possible,” Armenian Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran
Balayan told Interfax.

The Georgian eparchy of the Armenian Apostle Church has released a
statement on the incident in Tbilisi on July 19.

“On July 19, 2014 at approximately 5 p.m. (local time) an attack was
carried out in the yard of the Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin in
Tbilisi. A woman, who parked her car near the church gates failed to
drive away from the territory because of other vehicles. A churchgoer
of the Armenian church and eparchy representatives offered to help the
woman. However, she refused, having called her acquaintances. The men,
who arrived to the scene, helped with the car, at that having insulted
the Armenian priest and eparchy representatives. Church employees
approached them, however the men continued their disorderly conduct
having hit an eparchy representative. A fight occurred, which stopped
after a while, and the parties left,” the statement said.

“In the evening the same individuals, who were joined by some 50
people, attacked priest Manuk Zeynalyan in the church and head of the
Eparchy department for legal issues Levon Isakhanyan, having seriously
injured them. The attackers tore off the cross from the priest and
took it with them,” the Georgian eparchy of the Armenian church said.

Turkish Businesses Boycotting Israeli Products Because of Gaza

Turkish Businesses Boycotting Israeli Products Because of Gaza

by Elad Benari

Turkish businesses and local authorities are joining a campaign to
boycott products from Israel due to its operation in Gaza.

Turkish businesses and local authorities are joining a campaign, which
first spread on social media, to boycott products manufactured in
Israel due to its counterterrorism operation in Gaza.

According to English-language Today”s Zaman newspaper, the boycott
campaign is the largest since a similar initiative that was launched
following Israel”s raid on the Mavi Marmara in 2010.

Municipalities from Turkey’s largest cities, from Istanbul to small
towns in Anatolia, have urged residents not to buy products made in
Israel or which have links to Israel, in solidarity with the civilians
in Gaza, the newspaper reported.

A total of 12 municipalities joined the calls to boycott Israeli
products. The municipalities announced that certain products would not
be allowed to be sold at cafes, shops and recreational facilities run
by their local authorities.

Some municipalities openly named brands that they asked to be
boycotted, one of them being Coca Cola, along with many others.

Users on Twitter and Facebook shared lists of products that are
produced in Israel or manufactured by companies believed to have close
ties to the Israeli government. The posts on social media also shared
information for customers on how to spot Israeli goods in stores,
according to Today”s Zaman.

A call urging supermarkets, stores and shops to boycott Israeli goods
came from a large Turkish union late on Sunday. The Turkish
Tradesmen’s and Artisans’ Confederation (TESK), which has more than
1.5 million member businesses, was expected to make an official call
on members on Monday to help boycott Israeli products.

TESK President Bendevi Paland&oumlken told Turkish press over the
weekend that the confederation “is seriously considering a call for a
boycott on Israeli goods.”

“We are currently determining which companies and products can be
included in a boycott list,” he was quoted as having said.

“Turkish people are rather sensitive to the Gaza conflict and we have
to heed the voice of the public, we can call for a boycott anytime,”
he added.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has continued his verbal
attacks of Israel over its operation in Gaza.

Erdogan has threatened to end the normalization process with Israel
over “state terrorism”, and also accused Israel of “lies” because “not
enough” Israeli Jews have died in the conflict.

Last week, Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz (Likud) hit back at
Erdogan and reminded him of the Armenian Genocide, when in 1915 more
than a million Armenians were murdered by Ottoman troops.

“In 1915 the Turks massacred a million and a half Armenians and he
accuses us, who are fighting his friends in the Islamic movement, of
genocide? Who wants a relationship with such a person?” wrote Katz.

Azerbaijan’s leadership continues its destructive, dangerous policy

Azerbaijan’s leadership continues its destructive, dangerous policy –
Armenian FM

21:45 * 22.07.14

Armenian FM Edward Nalbandian, who arrived in Brussels for a working
visit, had a meeting with the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs Igor Popov of
Russia, James Warlick of the United States and Pierre Andrieu of
France, as well as with Personal Representative of the OSCE
Chairperson-in-Office, Ambassador Andrzej Kasprzyk.

The sides continued discussing progress in the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.

The Armenian FM drew the mediators’ attention to Azerbaijan’s militant
rhetoric at the highest level, statements distorting the essence of
negotiations, gross violations of the ceasefire on the Line of Contact
and intensified acts of sabotage by Azerbaijan.

By its provocations Azerbaijan is exacerbating the situation thereby
opposing the mediators’ numerous calls for preparing the peoples for
peace.

Despite the international community’s appeals, which are more and more
often addressed to Azerbaijan, that country’s leadership continues its
destructive and dangerous policy, arresting Azerbaijanis who call for
peace, which does not facilitate formation of a favorable atmosphere
at negotiations, Mr Nalbandian said.

Azerbaijan’s leadership is also trying to employ the domestic corrupt
practices at the interstate level, he added.

Minister Nalbandian re-affirmed Armenia’s willingness to continue
joint efforts at a peaceful settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict.
