Motion supporting the right of the so-called “Nagorno Karabakh
Republic” will not be discussed at the Basque Country parliament

27.09.2014 [13:50]

Vitoria, September 27 (AzerTAc). Azerbaijani ambassador to Spain Altay
Efendiyev has met Parliament Speaker of the Basque Country Bakartxo
Tejeria Otermin.
The Ambassador expressed concern over the reception of Karen Mirzoyan
presenting him as a “foreign minister” of the so-called “Nagorno
Karabakh Republic” and preparation of the motion about the right to
self-determination of Nagorno Karabakh adopted on the same day by the
Basque Country Parliament in early September. Efendiyev said it was an
unsuccessful attempt of the Armenian side to mislead the
parliamentarians of the Basque Country. He reminded that such steps
could damage the relations of both Spain and the Basque Country with
Azerbaijan.
The Ambassador provided full information on the history and current
state of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict, clarified
the real situation.
He said: “Armenia has occupied over 20 percent of Azerbaijan’s
internationally recognized territory, including Nagorno-Karabakh and
seven adjacent regions after laying territorial claims against its
South Caucasus neighbor that caused a brutal war in the early 1990s.
Long-standing efforts by U.S, Russian and French mediators have been
largely fruitless so far.”
“As a result of the military aggression of Armenia, over 20,000
Azerbaijanis were killed, 4,866 are reported missing and almost
100,000 were injured, and 50,000 were disabled.
The UN Security Council passed four resolutions on Armenian withdrawal
from the Azerbaijani territory, but they have not been enforced to
this day”.
The Parliament Speaker of the Basque Country Bakartxo Tejeria Otermin
said the motion was only considered at the commission level and she
herself was not fully aware of the document, which, according to her,
has no any legal ground. At her words, this was only the initiative of
two party groups and would not be considered at general discussions.
Ambassador Efendiyev expressed wish to meet with the commission
members, hold open discussions and answer their questions if needed.
The Parliament Speaker said she would promote such a meeting.

Religious comedy musical The Infidel comes to the stage

By Rachel Bishop on September 27, 2014 12:00 PM |

Following a huge crowdfunding campaign David Baddiel’s cult movie The
Infidel has made its way onto the stage – with added music.

Theatre Royal Stratford East has taken on the show, which co-director
Kerry Michael describes as having “an exciting original new voice and
some great tunes”.

The stage show will feature music from Erran Baron Cohen who has
revealed his pop writing talents in his score.

The story follows the adventures of British Muslim Mahmoud who
discovers not only that is he adopted, but also that his birth parents
were Jewish.

The ensuing journey has all the expected – and unexpected – cultural
and religious chaos of a comedy.

Armenian comedian Kev Orkian (Mahmoud) and Andrew Paul (Mahmoud’s arch
nemesis Jewish black-cab driver, Lenny) are bringing the rehearsals to
a close ahead of the opening night on October 4.

After finishing a tour in America early to rehearse for the show, Kev
says he is enjoying working with Baddiel, who he counts as one of his
comedic idols.

Speaking about his character who has been donned the “Muslim Homer
Simpson,” he said: “We’ve taken Homer’s naïvety, stupidity and comedic
timing and we are turning it into a father figure that’s part of a
Muslim family.

“It’s a completely different musical to one you’d find in the West End
and with a storyline that is beautifully put together and thought
provoking by David Baddiel – he has created a journey through the
characters very well.”

East Londoner Andrew, best known as The Bill’s PC Dave Quinnan, had to
contend with a busy schedule ahead of rehearsals.

He was performing in a stage thriller, in which he played twins, just
as he began to take on the comedic role of Lenny.

Speaking about the storyline he said: “There’s no political message in
it at all – you’d be hard pushed to be offended.

“It’s a brilliant piece for showing that ultimately, no matter what
your culture, creed or race we are all very much the same.”

Oct 4-Nov 2, Tues-Sat, 7.30pm, matinees from Oct 18; Wed, 2pm, Sat and
Sun, 3pm, £7-24, Theatre Royal Stratford East, stratfordeast.com.

Alexander Arzumayan: Installation of customs checkpoints can lead to a
new genocide (video)

13:47 | September 26,2014 | Politics

The placement of customs checkpoints between Armenia and
Nagorno-Karabakh can lead to a new genocide, says Armenian lawmaker
Alexander Arzumayan.

“It is simply inadmissible,” he said.

Speaking at the Hayeli club, Mr Arzumayan said that in the same way
customs checkpoints should be set up between Russia and the Crimea,
given the fact that no country, including the members of the Customs
Union, has recognized the peninsula’s secession from Ukraine and its
annexation to Russia. “Let us tell them, “You place checkpoints first
and we shall follow your example or else no side will place any
checkpoints,” said Mr Arzumanyan.

Speaking about the Eurasian Economic Union, the MP reiterated his
opinion that ‘it is only on paper.’ “On October 10, Kazakhstan will
likely propose to extend the discussion again.”

Mr Arzumanyan says Armenia took a foolish decision by joining the EEU.
“A year ago, we held a normal dialogue with Russia. Today Russia is an
isolated country, living under the burden of sanctions. We have a
silly saying ‘Collective death is equal to wedding.’ We seem to be
going to this collective death today,” he said.

Speaking about Surik Khachatryan’s reappointment as governor of Syunik
province, Mr Arzumanyan said ‘it was a slap in the face to the
people.’

Arthur Elbakyan’s play to premiere in New York City

Arthur Elbakyan’s play to premiere in New York City

Published: Saturday September 27, 2014

Arthur Elbakyan.

NEW YORK – The world premiere of “My Insane Shakespeare” by Arthur
Elbakyan is set to open at Theatre Row, in the heart of New York
City’s theatre district on the 42nd street.

What is better, to be in a mental hospital among normal people or to
be free among the insane? This is one of the questions I ask in my
performance.

“My Insane Shakespeare” will premiere at United Solo, the world’s
largest solo theatre festival on October 13, which is currently
sold-out with an additional bestseller performance on October 19. The
play is written, directed, and performed by Arthur Elbakyan.

“What is better, to be in a mental hospital among normal people or to
be free among the insane? This is one of the questions I ask in my
performance,” states Elbakyan.

Elbakyan plays the main character, an actor, who involuntarily finds
himself in a mental hospital at which point, the key developments of
the play unfold. Betrayed by his close friends and allies, the actor
analyzes life, love, hatred, vanity, human rights, freedom of speech,
and the rulers of the world. In the midst of solidarity and seclusion,
his feelings and emotions begin to flow upon paper and canvas.

“I tell this true story with my paintings, which make up part of the
stage design. I have painted the inner battles and breakthroughs of
the main character,” says Elbakyan, “‘My Insane Shakespeare’ is a
reflection on how an individual doesn’t break down in an insane asylum
but instead, against all odds, finds inner strength and willpower to
live, love and create.”

By drawing parallels between our modern day lives and the days of
Shakespeare, Elbakyan proves that over time, human relationships and
values have not changed at all. Moreover, he shows that Shakespeare’s
“to be, or not to be” has become even more of a burning question
today.

Arthur Elbakyan is an international actor and theatre, film, and
television director and producer. Having lived in Armenia, Russia,
Europe and the United States, Elbakyan has played over 30 leading
theatre roles and has been the author and host of numerous television
shows. Elbakyan was the founder of the Theatre Studio “13” and also
co-founded the first independent television channel in Armenia “AR”.
His passion for theatre was strong enough to bring theatre to
television with his introduction of a series of television shows “It’s
Majesty Theatre” on the National Television of Armenia, taking the
audience to the unique world of the theatre and performing arts.
Recently, Elbakyan has received Best Documentary Short Award at the
Los Angeles Film and Script Festival.

2014 United Solo Theatre Festival celebrates its 5th anniversary
season and its dynamic expansion in scope and popularity. Over 130
shows from six continents are staged at Theatre Row: 410 West 42nd
Street, New York City. TICKETS, with a price of $19.25 (including a
$1.25 theatre restoration charge) are available at Theatre Row box

Anania Shirakatsi, in his 7th century manuscript Tvabanutiun
(Arithmetic) describes the methods he has developed for teaching
arithmetic to beginners and to first grade children. This manuscript
is the world’s oldest extant manuscript on arithmetic.

It contains interesting detailed explanations. Shirakatsi’s method
does not use any fancy visual aids, it does not require memorization,
and it eliminates learning by rote. Shirakatsi’s method builds strong
mathematical long-lasting knowledge. This method has been successfully
used in Armenia for centuries. The net effect has been the acquisition
of higher levels of arithmetic knowledge by children, setting a strong
foundation for achievements in scientific research in their adult
years. Even though times have changed Shirakatsi’s 7th century
methodology continues to be as effective in the contemporary
environment as it has been since the 7th century.

The book is a synopsis and a brief introduction to Anania Shirakatsi’s
genius methodology in teaching arithmetic. The book can be useful for
elementary school teachers to adopted and effectively use Shirakatsi’s
methodology in the 21st century diverse classroom. This book can also
be useful for parents who wish to help their children master the art
of counting and to teach them the fundamentals of mathematics. For
those who are interested in the history of education this book is an
excellent introduction to Anania Shirakatsi, the author of the oldest
extant textbook on arithmetic.

There is much more to research and to talk about this fascinating
topic and about the beauty of Anania Shirakatsi’s work.

The book can be found at , and is also available in

Sos Sargsyan’s monument presents the artist with all his greatness

Sos Sargsyan’s monument presents the artist with all his greatness

15:24, 27 September, 2014

YEREVAN, SEPTEMBER 27, ARMENPRESS: It is already a year that USSR People’s
artist, renowned actor Sos Sargsyan is not with us.

September 26 marks the anniversary of the death of the great intellectual.
On that occasion intellectuals, state officials and lovers of his art
visited on September 27 the Yerevan Komitas Pantheon to pay tribute to the
artist’s memory and to see the monument dedicated to him. The sculptor of
the monument is Mkrtich Mazmanyan.

“If we search, we can find brilliant examples for educating our nation and
young people,” Defense Minister of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan told journalists
speaking of Sos Sargsyan, Armenpress reports. Recalling the artist, Sos
Sargsyan’s widow – Nelly Sargsyan, noted that there was no higher value for
the actor than the homeland.

Sos Sargsyan was a prominent Armenian actor, director and writer. He was
born in Stepanavan in northern Armenia, at the time part of the Soviet
Union. He moved to Yerevan in 1948 and started to perform at the Theater of
the Young Spectator. He graduated from the Fine Arts and Theater Institute
in 1954 as an actor. Between 1954 and 1991 he performed at the Sundukyan
State Academic Theatre of Yerevan. Some of his most notable roles include
Don Quixote, Iago, King John, King Lear, etc. He starred in over 40 films,
mostly Armenian. Besides Armenian films he has starred in a number of
Russian films, most notable of which is Solaris (1972), directed byAndrei
Tarkovsky.

In October 1991, a month after Armenia’s independence from the Soviet
Union, Sargsyan took part in the first presidential election in independent
Armenia. He was nominated by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation. In 1991
he established the Hamazgayin (Pan-National) Theater, which he headed until
his death. From 1997 to 2006 he was the rector of the Yerevan Cinema and
Theatre Institute. Sargsyan died on September 26, 2013 in Yerevan.

President Serzh Sargsyan and thousands of people. He was buried at the

"If forgiving, then our martyrs should forgive."

“If forgiving, then our martyrs should forgive.”

September 27 2014

“Aravot” met with Romanian writer, also politician, also Chairman of
the Armenian Union in Romania, also Vice-President of the Writers’
Union of Romania, Varujan Vosganian (in the photo). The event was the
writer’s book “The Book of Whispers” published by “Antares” Media
Holding, which in the genre of fiction presents the sorrow and losses
of the Armenian people associated with genocide. As characterized by
the experts, it is a new interpretation of the genocide and its
consequences. The writer is the author of various books, of which “The
Book of Whispers” novel became more famous. The latter was published
in Romania in 2009, translated into 7 languages and has become a
bestseller in a number of countries. The book once was a great clamor
in Turkey. To the question of what the real reason for it is, Varujan
Vosganian answered, “The Ambassador of Turkey had even sent a protest
note to the Romanian government, saying that allegedly my book has
offended the feelings of the Turkish people. As to what the offense
was, I do not know. Because we are to be offended rather than them. On
the contrary, my book does not encourage hatred against Turkish
people, at all. My grandfather, Sedrak Melikyan, survived the
genocide, because he got a help by a Turkish family. He was ill, this
family found him, kept him in the stable in secret and my grandfather
thus was rescued. Thus, to some extent, I owe to piety of some Turks.
No need to mess up the things. Human relations are one thing, and the
deeds of the authorities is a different thing.” We reminded Mr.
Voskanyan that once he had voiced three of his own positions on the
issue of the genocide: a/ forget what happened, b/ forgive the Turks,
c/ revenge, saying that if forgetting, then we would have committed
self-murdering, taking a revenge will be continual, while for
forgiving, one should be sure that what happened will nor reoccur. And
to which of the tree options the author gives preference on the
threshold of the 100th anniversary of the genocide, Mr. Vosganian
said, “These are not options but the moves. Forgetting is excluded,
the matter of forgiveness that is still wondering in my mind will
become a reality only in one case when the second party (meaning the
Turks) recognizes its guilt, like in the case with Germans and the
Jews. And if forgiving, then our martyrs should forgive. For the final
solution for the problem, in my opinion, a four dimension is required:
international law, moral, economic and state. To be honest, I am sure
that one day Turkey will recognize. There are many problems facing
this country on this issue, and they, I am sure, are well aware of it.
For instance, the churches and cemeteries must be returned to
Armenians…” To the inquiry of what steps the diaspora undertakes
currently, particularly the diaspora in Romania, Mr. Vosganian said
that the Diaspora has failed to create an Armenian ideology, the
diaspora is just a community, and later he replied, “After the World
War I, the Romanian-Armenian community was quite powerful not only by
the influence, but also in numbers. Romania was the first state to
open its ports for the genocide survivors, for Nansen members, and
therefore, the community, which is the oldest community in Europe
(Armenian moved to Romania around 1,000 years ago), became quite
strong. I can tell that about half of the members of the first
Government of Armenia were in Romania, and we could even open an
Armenian government in abroad, from Katchaznouni up to Drastamat
Kanay. After the World War II, unfortunately, many Armenians who could
not adapt the community-led life migrated to the West. So, now, the
number of the community is small, a few thousand, but we are very
influential. In fact, our voice is perceived as a powerful voice. With
regard to the “powerful” voice, our interlocutor said the following,
“After 1990, our community is rooted in the history of Romania.
Therefore, we decided to take care of our needs in the political
arena. For instance, we were able to fix a clause in the Constitution,
according to which, the national minorities have the same rights to
participate the election campaigns and have their candidates. The
Armenian community has a Senator in the Parliament in 1990, and
henceforth, continually, our representative is at the same time the
leader of the parliamentary group for minorities. I presented the
community for only 6 years, and the greatest strength is in our being
united.” Varujan Vosganian is convinced, “The Armenian community in
Romania is currently in the best of the situation in the world.
According to him, there is no other Armenian community in the world,
which has so much appropriate rights as we have in Romania. For
example, our priests are paid by the state, our expenses of our Sunday
schools and the teachers’ salaries are also paid by the government,
our expenses for the newspaper are also covered by the state. In
short, there is a separate line in the budget of Romania, which
provides funds for the Union of Armenians of Romania, for cultural and
organizational matters. On the other hand, Romania wants to develop
good relations and cooperation in the Black Sea area. Therefore, the
economic and political ties between Romania and Turkey are very
powerful. Romania’s political class is also very careful in such
sensitive matters. Although we are very respected and have many
rights, but the Romanian political parties do not want to go forwards
to the recognition. As a moral issue, recognition is acknowledged, but
the Parliament has not yet made any official announcement about
recognition of the genocide.”
