Sergey Shahverdyan, the head of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic
Government Department of Tourism and Historic Preservation, has denied
Azerbaijani MFA spokesperson’s information that Karabakh is suspended
from participation in the TTG Incontri Rimini 2014 international
tourism exhibition being held in Rimini, Italy.

“Karabakh is participating in the exhibition without incidents. We
have a separate booth, which generates a lot of interest among the
tourism industry professionals and the exhibition visitors.

“In general, we don’t understand what the Azerbaijan MFA spokesperson
is talking about; this is ordinary provocation and misinformation,”

Erebouni-Yerevan: Armenia’s capital celebrates 2796th anniversary

Erebouni-Yerevan: Armenia’s capital celebrates 2796th anniversary

11:13 * 12.10.14

Yerevan is celebrating its 2796th anniversary. The events will be
marked in a number of communities.

The celebrations will commence under the slogan ‘Yerevan, my home’ and
last for a whole day.

Guests from different countries arrived in Armenia’s capital to attend
the celebrations.

The first Erebouni-Yerevan celebrations were organized in October 1968
to mark the 2750th anniversary of Armenia’s capital.

A song entitled ‘Erebouni-Yerevan’ was composed by Paruyr Sevak and
Edgar Hovhannisyan, which later became the city’s anthem. The song was
first sung by a 2,750-member chorus headed by Tatul Altunyan.

The celebrations lasted for a week. Numerous events were organized,
books on the history of Yerevan published, films on Yerevan’s everyday
life screened, exhibitions held and commemorative coins issued.

The fountain marking the 2750th anniversary of Yerevan was
commissioned in the park adjacent to Republic Square.

In different years the mottos of the celebrations were ‘I love you,
Yerevan’, ‘Capital of my heart’, ‘Guide of my’, ‘We are Yerevan.’

This slogan of this year’s celebrations is ‘Yerevan, my home’. A new
song has been presented to Armenia’s capital the city (lyrics by Avet
Barseghyan).

Thousands attend Armenia opposition rally

Protesters in the Armenian capital accuse the President of failing to
address corruption and call for his resignation.

Yerevan, Armenia – Thousands of people have gathered in the Armenian
capital to protest against the government, accusing it of failing to
address corruption, in the largest such demonstration in years.

Over 10,000 protesters rallied in Yerevan’s Freedom Square on Friday,
brought together by three of the country’s major opposition parties,
following a series of smaller demonstrations over the past two weeks
in cities across the country.

In between speeches by party representatives, protesters chanted
“Serzh, leave,” calling on the country’s president, Serzh Sargsyan,
who was re-elected in 2013, to quit.

“I’m tired of this government. It’s only working for itself, not the
people,” said Ashot Petrosyan, 61, who came to show his support for
the protest in front of the city’s iconic opera house.

Maria Titizian, managing editor of CivilNet, an independent online TV
station, said besides the large number of protesters, what made
Friday’s rally unusual was that three parties from Armenia’s normally
fragmented opposition came together.

“We’ve come to a point where a majority of the population is really
dissatisfied with the quality of living and the level of impunity and
corruption, and they’re desperate for change,” Titizian said.

“My concern is that changing the people on the top is not going to
bring fundamental change, unless there is fundamental institutional
change, impunity is eradicated and there is rule of law in the
country. We’ve had several cases of high-level politicians getting
away with crimes, just being assigned other portfolios,” she added.

Economic malaise

The small country in the Caucasus, that became independent in 1991
after the fall of the Soviet Union, is plagued by persistent
unemployment and low wages that push thousands of people to leave
every month.

“The level of emigration is a catastrophe,” said Lousineh Navasartian,
29, who stood near the front of the protesters. “And there’s
corruption at every level of society.”

In addition to general discontent with the government and the
president, the opposition is rallying against constitutional
amendments proposed by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK)
party.

The opposition says that the purpose of the reform is to allow
Sargsyan to become a powerful prime minister after completing his
second and final presidential term in 2018.

“If the constitution is changed, the current government will just
expand its life cycle,” protester Petrosyan said.

Sargsyan’s HHK and an opposition party that has not joined the latest
protests, the Armenian Revolutionary Federation (Dashnaktsutyun),
argue that the proposed amendments, that will limit the sweeping
presidential powers, are critical for Armenia’s democratisation.

Official results gave Sargsyan more than 58 percent of the 2013
presidential vote. His nearest rival, Raffi Hovannisian, garnered 36
percent and refused to concede defeat, alleging election fraud.

International observers said the polls lacked real competition as
several leading candidates had chosen not to run.

during the march.

Upon returning to the square, Aram Manukyan, Secretary of the Armenian
National Congress (HAK), said ‘victory will be ours.’

The opposition trio promised to provide information on the next rally
in a few days’ time.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said that the CIS was playing an
important role in maintaining stability in the world in the context
of tensions in other regions. He added that cooperation within the
framework of the CIS should focus on peace and stability, settlement
and prevention of conflicts according to the principles of the UN
Charter, TASS reports.

Military cooperation and collaboration of law enforcers and border
guards in fighting drug trafficking is an important priority pointed
out by Sargsyan.

The Armenian leader thanked Belarus for encouraging cooperation among
CIS members as the chair of the organization.

He also reminded, in the light of the 70th anniversary of the Great
Patriotic War, that “the bloody lessons of two world wars of the 20th

Geneva (AFP) – Legendary French-Armenian singer Charles Aznavour, 90,
has been hospitalised for an infection and has postponed a concert
due to be held later on Friday in Geneva, organisers said.

Dubbed “France’s Frank Sinatra,” Aznavour is one of the country’s
best-known and beloved singers, whose ballads are recognised the
world over.

“Charles Aznavour has been preventively hospitalised after contracting
an infection in recent days,” the Opus One event managers said in
a statement, without providing more details about his condition or
which country or hospital he was being treated in.

The activist-singer’s planned concert in Geneva Friday evening had
been postponed, but he and the organisers would try to reschedule
the concert “as soon as possible,” the statement said.

Aznavour lives in Switzerland, having built a lakeside house near
Lausanne to be closer to his youngest son Nicolas, a scientist at
the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in the city.

Aznavour, who began performing at the age of nine, has penned nearly
1,000 songs over his career.

“Everything interests me, really everything… I read every day. I have
three books: a book I have to read, a book where I learn something
and I have foreign language texts that I work on regularly,” he told
Swiss public broadcaster RTS at the weekend.

“Over the past two months we have travelled to 10 capitals,” he said,
insisting though that it was not a farewell tour.

“I’ll be back next time,” he told the broadcaster.

ST. PETERSBURG, October 10. /TASS/. The majority of tourists
travelling to countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States
(CIS), the association of former Soviet republics, are Russians,
tourist officials said on Friday.

“In Belarus, revenues from Russian tourism business account for 62.3%
of the money from tourism services exports,” the country’s deputy
sports and tourism minister, Cheslav Shulga, told representatives of
tourism agencies and governments of four CIS countries attending a
session of the CIS Tourism Council in St. Petersburg.

Many of the Russian visitors to Belarus come for the purpose of
attaining medical services or to attend major events such as the
Ice Hockey World Championship, Shulga said, adding that Belarusian
citizens also travelled to Russia quite often. Moscow, St. Petersburg
and Smolensk were among the most visited cities, he said.

“CIS citizens account for more than a half of tourist flows in
Armenia. About 90% of them are Russians,” said Armenia’s chief adviser
to the economy minister, Ara Petrosyan, predicting the volume to grow
by 200,000 this year from more than one million making the journey
in 2013.

Azerbaijan was visited by 2.5 million foreign guests last year, said
the deputy head of the tourism department at the Culture and Tourism
Ministry, Rauf Pashayev, noting that most of travellers were also
from Russia.
