‘This is a pitiful attempt to stop us, but we won’t be quelled’, SIS chief says on wiretapped recording
Special Investigative Service director Sasun Khachatryan says he is sure that the wiretapped recording of a phone conversation between him and National Security Service director Arthur Vanetsyan which was disclosed online is a pitiful attempt to stop them, which won’t succeed.
“The conversation between me and the NSS director has been published, where we discussed certain issues regarding the March 1 case. Vanetsyan had concerns over the fact that whether it is true that when a person is being brought to court without being arrested, and that the court must examine a motion in conditions when the person is free. I talked about the grounds of the arrest, I presented in what conditions it is being done,” the SIS head told a press conference today.
Speaking about the part of the recording where he and Vanetsyan are discussing the arrest of CSTO Secretary General Yuri Khachaturov, Sasun Khachatryan said he has simply informed the NSS director that a motion has already been submitted and that he has already told the Prime Minister about it.
“The Prime Minister has numerously mentioned that no ban will exist on arresting any given individual, which in turn was applied in the Khachaturov case. I expressed opinion that in this case the arrest can be very effective,” he said.
Khachatryan said that he cannot find words to comment the step of publishing the recording. “This is a pitiful attempt to stop us, but be certain that we won’t be quelled, we will do our job,” he said.
Azerbaijani Press: Turkish Military Intelligence Officer: Turkey Does Not Need Military Base in Nakhchivan
Baku / 04.09.18 / Turan: The former head of Intelligence of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, Colonel-General Ismail Haggı Pekin said there is no need to establish a Turkish military base in Nakhchivan.
This opinion was expressed by Pekin, answering Turan’s question: “Is Turkey going to build a military base in Nakhchivan?”
Earlier, the columnist of the Turkish newspaper Sözcü, Zeynep Gürcanlı, in an article published in the September 3 issue reported that talks are spread in Ankara about Turkey preparing to open a military base in Nakhchivan.
“The corps of the armed forces of Azerbaijan is headquartered in Nakhchivan. Turkey provides it with the necessary support, our military advisers are there, and Turkey closely cooperates with the border troops and the Nakhchivan Special Forces. When it is impossible to send fuel for the troops in Nakhchivan, Turkey, and sometimes Iran, provide fuel to the military forces of the autonomous region,” Colonel-General Pekin said.
He also drew attention to the fact that Turkey’s opening of a military base in Nakhchivan would raise suspicion in Iran. “Nakhchivan, on the one hand, has borders with Armenia, and on the other hand, with Turkey.” Turkey’s support for the military forces in Nakhchivan is troubling Armenia, which should not cause concern, since it is too small, but the appearance of a military base of a NATO member country next door can trouble Iran.
And in general, there is no point in opening a base in Nakhchivan, since Turkey, without this, provides the necessary support to the autonomy. Why do we need to build a base when, very close to Nakhchivan, in the towns of Dogubeyazit and Kars, our military units are located, and a corps is located in Erzurum? The question of establishing our naval base in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is now being considered. We should focus on this,” the ex-head of the Turkish military intelligence agency told Turan.
It should be noted that Colonel-General Ismail Haggi Pekin spent the years 2011-2014 in prison on charges of the Balyoz (Sledgehammer) Operation conducted by the FETO (Fethullah Gülen) organization against the Turkish army. However, then Pekin and 200 officers of the Turkish army again appeared before the court and were acquitted. -0–

168: ‘I don’t know why people are criticizing so much’ – Henrikh Mkhitaryan
Armenian national football team captain and London’s Arsenal midfielder Henrikh Mkhitaryan commented on the criticisms addressed to him and his team, BBC reported.
Mkhitaryan said he “doesn’t know why people are criticizing so much”.
“I’m the worst critic in my football game and I don’t need extra criticism. I know very well what I am giving to the team and what the team gives me. We have a new manager and are trying to adapt to his philosophy and also his demands. It has been a tough start of course – we faced two good teams in Man City and Chelsea – but you don’t have any easy opponents in this league. We lost the first game and the second one as well. But that’s football. We just have to stay positive and continue working hard and the good results will come”, Mkhitaryan said.
He added that they don’t feel any pressure, don’t think that something is going wrong.
The midfielder said he doesn’t pay attention to criticisms because he knows if he has played bad or well.
William Saroyan’s unpublished plays set for L.A. world premiere
PanARMENIAN.Net – Never-before-staged scenes from William Saroyan’s unpublished plays will be performed in a world premiere production at the Los Angeles Central Library’s Taper Auditorium on September 15, Asbarez reports.
“William Saroyan: The Unpublished Plays in Performance,” created by award-winning playwright and director Aram Kouyoumdjian, will be staged by Vista Players, “a boundlessly talented” ensemble that “set the standard by which others were judged” (Sacramento News & Review).
Kouyoumdjian was granted special permission by Stanford University, where Saroyan’s unpublished manuscripts are housed, to stage the excerpts. Selections from such works as “The Armenian Play (or Opera),” “Home to Hayastan,” and “Ouzenk Chouzenk Hai Yenk” (Like It or Not, We’re Armenians) will explore a wide array of themes, including immigrant life, the trauma of genocide, and the notion of repatriation.
The performance at the Central Library is being presented as part of the Library’s “L.A. Made” series and is co-sponsored by Los Angeles City Councilmember Paul Krekorian. Councilmember Krekorian will make a special presentation to the L.A. City Council on August 31 about Saroyan, as well as the commemorative Library event, which he is scheduled to attend.
August 31 marks the occasion of William Saroyan’s 110th birthday: the impetus to present the renowned playwright’s unknown works at venerated venues in Southern and Central California. The production is slated for additional performances in Fresno and in Orange County, as well as an encore performance in L.A.
Admission to the L.A. Central Library event is free, but seating is limited and will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Doors open at 6:30 pm, and the performance will begin at 7 p.m.
Saroyan is the pre-eminent Armenian-American author who rose to prominence in the 1930s and went on to have a prolific career for five decades. A writer of short stories, novels, plays, and memoirs, he won the Pulitzer Prize for his most famous dramatic work, “The Time of Your Life,” and an Academy Award for his screenplay of “The Human Comedy.”
Kouyoumdjian, who wrote his Master’s thesis on Saroyan’s unpublished plays, is the winner of Elly Awards for both playwriting (The Farewells) and directing (Three Hotels). His feature plays and solo pieces have been performed in half a dozen cities, from Los Angeles (Fountain Theatre) to London (Finborough Theatre). His most recent work has included an adaptation of Levon Shant’s Ancient Gods (2014); Happy Armenians (Los Angeles, 2015; Sacramento, 2016); and i Go On, an open-air, site-specific performance piece in conjunction with the iWitness installation of Genocide survivor portraits (DTLA’s Grand Park, 2015; Glendale Central Park, 2017).

About 80 miles east of Yerevan, Armenia’s capital city, Martuni is part of eastern Armenia’s Gegharkunik region, a place known for its natural scenery: towering mountains and protected forests dotted with waterfalls and stunning river valleys. Travelers flock to the waters of Lake Sevan, the largest lake in Transcaucasia, and, in warmer months, bed down at a string of spa resorts and hotels throughout the area. Only a small number of travelers venture far from the lakeshore, though, and the summer busy season is fleeting. Torosyan and his local colleagues believe there’s a lot more in the region for visitors to experience.
In 2016, Torosyan joined several other local artisans and bed and breakfast business owners in a four-month program devoted to promoting cultural and ecotourism in Gegharkunik’s greater Chambarack area. (Chambarack is a larger town less than eight miles from Martuni.) Organized by Machanents Tourism and Art, an offshoot of the Armenian NGO Cross of Armenian Unity, the program offered workshops in creating visually attractive, multi-language business websites, classes on using online platforms like tripadvisor.com and airbnb.com and tips for building a network of culture-based tourism offerings designed to lure travelers deeper into the region.
Arpine Gyulumyan, runs Getik Bed and Breakfast, one of three participating family-run B&Bs in the area. “Ruslan and I work together,” she says. “He sends his guests to spend the night and to our classes. And I always take my guests to him to make motal cheese.”
Armenian mobile developers can sell their created apps in Android Google Play
From now on, Armenian mobile developers can place and sell their created apps in Android Google Play.
Before, Armenian developers have had the opportunity to place free apps on Google Play that have been available worldwide. However, paid apps that may contain in-app purchases, were not allowed be placed and sold by the Developer accounts that were opened in Armenia, as Armenia was not included in the list of countries allowed by Google. So, local companies were forced to open Developer accounts in other countries and pay taxes for sales in other countries. There were also difficulties in getting money, as Google sent out the money only to the bank accounts opened in that country.
Armenian specialists have repeatedly raised this issue, and since last year, negotiations were initiated between the representatives of the Ministry of Transport, Communication and Information Technologies of the Republic of Armenia and Google on this issue.
Finally last week, these negotiations were over. Companies registered in Armenia can sell their apps on Google Play and get revenues.
This was a real obstacle for Armenian programmers. As a result of its elimination, the number of mobile applications produced in Armenia will increase, and their consumption in the international market will increase.
