Bright Armenia ready to apply to CC if necessary number of signatures is gathered: Edmon Marukyan

Aysor, Armenia
Feb 10 2020

Bright Armenia faction is ready to apply to the CC if necessary number of signatures are gathered, head of Bright Armenia faction Edmon Marukyan told Aysor.am, referring to the statement that the 1/5 of NA deputies may apply to CC to appeal the decision of the president to conduct constitutional referendum.

“But there are no signatures. If there are, we are ready. The PAP stated that it waits for the conclusion of the Venice Commission, consequently they will not join this initiative at this phase. This is why it is senseless to apply to us with this question. If we do not get the necessary number of signatures why to initiate it. We have 17 signatures, bring the other 10 to apply,” Edmon Marukyan said.

Chairman of the NA’s State-Legal Affairs Standing Committee Vladimir Vardanyan earlier stated that if 1/5 of the National Assembly deputies apply to the Constitutional Court to appeal the president’s decision or decree, the CC will decide to suspend this process or not.

The president signed the decree appointing referendum for April 5.

The referendum is aimed at ceasing the tenure of the CC chairman Hrayr Tovmasyan and six judges.

Caroline Cox: Genocide of Armenians in Baku, Sumgait and Artsakh must be recognized

Public Radio of Armenia
Feb 6 2020

On Wednesday 5 February 2020, MEP Costas Mavrides (S&D Group, Cyprus) hosted a conference with the title “The forgotten refugees: What Happened to the Armenians of Baku?” in the European Parliament. The conference was co-organized by the European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy (EAFJD) and the Mission of the Republic of Armenia to the European Union.

The keynote speakers were the British humanitarian, Life Peer and former deputy speaker of the House of Lords the Baroness Caroline Cox and eye-witnesses Anna Astvatsaturian Turcotte, an American-Armenian author and human rights advocate as well as David Babaev, a lecturer at “Université Libre de Bruxelles”. The latter are both survivors of the Baku pogroms.

Members of the European Parliament, EP advisers, students, representatives of the civil society and missions of various EU member states as well as Belgian citizens who are survivors of Baku pogroms, were present.

In his opening remark, the EAFJD President Kaspar Karampetian welcomed the participants and emphasized the importance of addressing the issue of the anti-Armenian pogroms, in particular in the premises of the house of European democracy. “In its resolutions of 1990 the European Parliament unequivocally condemned the pogroms perpetrated against the Armenians by the Azerbaijani authorities, namely in Sumgait, Kirovabad and Baku,” stated Karampetian.

MEP Costas Mavrides announced that he had decided to host the event, among other reasons, because of his own experience as a child who had to flee for his life after the Turkish invasion in Northern Cyprus in 1974. He emphasized: “Remembrance is not about revenge but forgetting is unforgivable because it would lead us to the same crimes”.

His Excellency the Ambassador of Armenia Tatoul Markarian reminded that the anti-Armenian massacres in Azerbaijan were the first mass killings and ethnic cleansings in the post-Cold War Europe.

During their testimonies, Ms. Astvatsaturian Turcotte and Mr. Babaev shared their personal stories and what they witnessed as refugees fleeing Baku. “We spent months hiding in our apartment, hoping that the violence against Armenians would end. But it never ended. We left everything behind and fled. We barely escaped but we survived. Many of our neighbors and family friends were not so lucky”, said Astvatsaturian Turcotte.

Babaev underlined that the killings and pogroms in Sumgait and Baku had not come from nowhere and the ground was already fertile. He noted: “These atrocities: violence, intimidation, rape, murder and burning people alive should not stay unpunished.”

The Baroness Caroline Cox pointed out that the genocide of Armenians continued in Baku, Sumgait and Nagorno Karabakh-Artsakh and needs to be recognized so that it does not continue with impunity.

The guest speakers stressed that the Azerbaijani authorities still systematically incite and perpetuate Armenophobia as a state policy in Azerbaijan, a policy witnessed by the victims of Baku pogroms. They concluded by acknowledging the important role of the European Union as a soft power promoting dialog, peace and human rights.

The speeches were followed by a lively question and answer session, where the guest-speakers addressed the questions asked among others by Azerbaijani participants.

Azerbaijani press: Political analyst: PACE doesn’t distinguish between occupied country and aggressor country

3 February 2020 17:28 (UTC+04:00)

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb. 3

Trend:

The PACE resolution on so-called “political prisoners” in Azerbaijan on the eve of parliamentary elections in the country and its adoption by a majority of votes to recommend to the CoE Committee of Ministers is another step designed to strike at Azerbaijan’s reputation, Ilyas Huseynov, a political analyst, told Trend, commenting on the PACE resolution adopted at its winter session.

According to Ilyas Huseynov, PACE, where deputies with pro-Armenian position make up the majority, has once again demonstrated a biased approach towards Azerbaijan.

“It is regrettable that PACE does not distinguish between the occupied country and the aggressor country. It is unacceptable that people arrested in Azerbaijan for specific criminal acts are called political prisoners,” Huseynov said.

“Why was PACE silent when Dilgam Asgarov and Shahbaz Guliyev were taken hostages by the Armenian armed forces, while they wanted to visit the graves of relatives in the Kalbajar district on July 11, 2014, when an illegal “court” sentenced Dilgam Asgarov to life imprisonment and Shahbaz Guliyev to 22 years of imprisonment? Therefore, this biased position taken towards Azerbaijan by PACE, which turns a blind eye to the inhuman attitude towards Azerbaijani “prisoners” and the conditions of their detention, can not be understood,” the Azerbaijani political analyst added.

Ilyas Huseynov emphasized that some organizations demonstrate an anti-Azerbaijani position in their reports and decisions that are not based on the real situation and facts in the country, but mainly on the speculations by the radical opposition.

“The pro-Armenian forces, using the information of the radical opposition, which aims at discrediting the democratic electoral environment in the country, continue the campaign against Azerbaijan,” Huseynov concluded.

Asbarez: Avetisyan’s ‘Gate to Heaven’ Premiers in Armenia and Artsakh

Jivan Avetisyan’s “Gate to Heaven” premiered in both Armenia and Artsakh this month. The October 17 premiere of the film in Yerevan was attended by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.

Centered on the 2016 April War in Artsakh, the film tells the story of Robert Stenval, a journalist who returns to Artsakh to investigate and cover the Four-Day War. While in Artsakh, Stenval meets a young opera singer, Sofia Martirosyan – the daughter of missing photojournalist Edgar Martirosyan, who Stenval had met during the fall of the village of Talish in 1992. As the film progresses, Sofia and Robert’s friendship develops into a more romantic relationship.

“The film will be accessible to foreigners who have no idea about Artsakh. This film differs from my other films in terms of cast members, structure, plot, and more. The film is also planned to be presented at various international festivals. We are planning to premiere the film in a number of other countries as well,” commented Avetisyan in an interview with Artsakhpress. He also mentioned that his goal is to see Artsakh both free and independent.

The Artsakh premier of the film was attended by the film’s production team and cast members. Richard Sammel, who won “Best Actor” at the Syracuse International Film Festival in 2012, plays the part of the film’s protagonist Robert. In an interview with Artsakhpress, he said, “The film is also about tolerance; it can be a cultural ambassador to other countries. I had high expectations from the film, which came true… Artsakh is a developing country and every person who wants to get full information about Artsakh must be in Artsakh. People who live here strive for peace.” During the interview, Sammel revealed that, due to his participation in the film, he has been banned from entering Azerbaijan

The movie was filmed in Artsakh, Armenia, and Lithuania. Co-producing countries include Armenia, Lithuania, Germany, France, U.S., Bulgaria, Czech Republic, and Italy.

Brad Sherman: time to recognize Armenian Genocide by overwhelming vote Brad Sherman: time to recognize Armenian Genocide by overwhelming vote

00:35, 18.10.2019

It is time for the United States to reevaluate policies toward Turkey, U.S. congressman Brad Sherman said during the debate on a resolution opposing U.S. withdrawal from Syria.

“Since the 1940s, we have safeguarded Turkey through our membership in NATO and theirs. We protected Turkey from subversion in the 1940s and protected it from the Soviet Union for decades. Recently, over the last 20 years, we have had a policy of obsequious humiliation in our approach to Turkey.

We have kowtowed to Ankara in failing to recognize the Armenian genocide.

In doing so, we have taken a foreign policy normally based on truth and honor, and instead, humiliated ourselves through silence and concealment. It is time to recognize the Armenian genocide by an overwhelming vote here in the House.

It is time for us to stop dishonor in our relationship with Turkey,” he said.

Zakharova presented the position of the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with Zatulin`s visit to Artsakh

Arminfo, Armenia

ArmInfo.A note from the Azerbaijani side in connection with the visit of the State Duma lawmaker, first deputy chairman of the State Duma Committee on CIS  Affairs Konstantin Zatulin to Nagorno-Karabakh was received through  diplomatic channels. This was announced on October 17 during a weekly  briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign  Ministry, Maria Zakharova.

”I want to once again draw attention to the fact that on our website  there is a warning published for a very long time but, unfortunately,  few of those who want to travel to the corresponding region pay  attention to it.  So, we have a valid warning on our website that I  quote: .  It should be noted that on October 11, Konstantin  Zatulin took part in Nagorno-Karabakh and spoke at the international  forum “Friends of Artsakh: for justice and peace”.  During his  speech, Zautlin said that the people of Artsakh demonstrate  tremendous achievements in civilian life. People in Artsakh live a  full-fledged life, opposing any incitement”, – said Zatulin, while  noting that it was impossible not to touch upon the issue of  recognizing Artsakh at the forum.  According to him, everyone expects  and hopes that good will and a sober approach to the settlement of  the Karabakh conflict will triumph and peace will return to this  land. At the same time, he added that there is no doubt that such a  moment will never come when Nagorno-Karabakh loses its statehood. “I  can say that the Russian Federation, as a mediator, promotes a  peaceful resolution to the conflict and thwarts military attempts in  every possible way. Such an attempt was made in April 2016, it was  not part of the kind people’s plan, and Russia did everything in its  power to end it soon and reduce explosiveness. The settlement of the  Karabakh conflict is a priority for us, “said Zatulin.

”But, one way or another, you can be sure that the Russian  Federation as a state will not allow an unjust solution to the  Karabakh conflict. I’m just sure of that. Whoever the president or  the prime minister is, the Russian people first of all value  conscience and justice. And they are on your side”, – concluded  Zatulin.

New form of tourism in Armenia: wilderness, adrenalin – and developing local businesses

JAM News

70 kilometers through the mountains, with crossings through rivers and gorges, and stopovers in ancient villages

A group of Armenian guides undertook to develop ecotourism in the very south of the country – now they are expecting an inflow of tourists starting next year.

A new 70-kilometer tourist route will be created in the Syunik region and will pass through reserves and forests and connect the paths of Kapan and Meghri.

Guides say that this mountain route will give tourists the opportunity to see completely wild nature, wade through gorges, cross rivers, see ancient temples and settlements.

The route includes the Platan Grove reserve, thickets of eastern beech, Mount Khustup, where there are tent camps. Part of the route runs directly along the famous Silk Road.

The Platan Grove Nature Reserve is also included in the itinerary.  JAMnews Photos

The idea belongs to the public organization Guides from the South. And their goal is not only the development of ecotourism – but the creation of jobs for the local population

“By the end of 2019, our route will be ready – thoroughly developed, consistent with state standards and displayed on maps. By this time, many local guides will also undergo retraining. We will organize a big PR campaign in cooperation with local and foreign agencies, and hope to attract many tourists,” says Robert Matevosyan, chairman of the Guides from the South organization.

Eight villages will be involved in the route – and, accordingly, in the new tourism business – which are located next to the Shikahogh Nature Reserve and the Arevik National Park.

“Local residents will sell products, open restaurants, and local traditional crafts will be in demand. The goal is for communities to develop themselves, without external assistance, and tourism will become an incentive for them,” says David Hakobyan, guide, ecologist and program coordinator at Guides from the South.

David Hakobyan is a history teacher by profession, works at the Kapan Geological Museum, and is a guide in his spare time. JAMnews Photos

The entire programme is called “Ecotourism as an incentive for the socio-economic development of communities around protected areas.”

Since 2018, 27 guides have already been trained – and together with them they have gathered legends, stories about history and traditions, and prepared a program for tourists.

“In preparing the route, volunteers from Peru, Colombia, Russia and Poland worked with us.  If we receive the necessary financing, by the end of the year we will also conduct courses on how to organize a hotel business,” says David.

A separate website will be created for this 70-kilometer route, where, among other things, they will publish a list of goods and services that will be provided by at least 40 families included in the project. The site even has the recipes of traditional dishes of these places.

Already, about two to three thousand tourists from the USA, Europe, Russia and Japan come to the Syunik region annually, and these places are quite popular among the residents of Armenia itself.  JAMnews Photos

Shikahogh is one of the eight villages included in the program, 330 kilometers from Yerevan.  Around the village there is a dense forest, near the Shikahogh nature reserve, many of the local plants and animals are included in the Red Book.  JAMnews Photos

Since the beginning of the 1990s, the population of Shikahogh has been reduced four times, there are very few people left.

Aramis Tadevosyan, a 58-year-old military training teacher at the local school, together with his wife Gohar decided to join the tourism business – and have already taken their first steps.  They renovated their two-story house and even managed to receive the first tourists this year.

“Tourists from Russia and Colombia came to us. We took them into our home, fed them with our own food.  We keep chickens, and we have a greenhouse, I make vodka myself, my wife cooks well. Our prices are not high, but so far, unfortunately, there is not a large flow of tourists”, Aramais says.  JAMnews Photos

The son of Aramais is 28 years old.  More recently, Bagrat and his wife and child returned from Russia.

Bagrat also took courses in becoming a guide. And with his own hands he assembled a car to take tourists into the mountains.  JAMnews Photos

I left to work, but could not get used to life in Russia.  If tourists find out about our places, they will come to us.  And we will have the opportunity to get down to business, stop thinking about leaving our village, even those who left will return,” says Bagrat.
