EXPERT FORECASTS DETERIORATION OF TURKISH-ISRAELI TIES

PanARMENIAN.Net
March 29, 2012 – 17:08 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Director of RA NAS Institute of Oriental Studies
noted increasing presence in the Arab world as Turkey’s key goal.

Asked by a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter about development prospects of the
Turkish-Israeli relations, Ruben Safrastyan answered that Turkey tries
to have its impact on the region through strengthening anti-Israeli
rhetoric and support to the Palestinian organizations.

According to the expert, deterioration of bilateral ties bears a
natural rather than a demonstrative character, with the anti-Israeli
rhetoric backed by a large number of pro-Iranian forces.

“The ruling Justice and Development Party in Turkey is based on Islamic
ideology, with PM Erdogan’s position contributing to the aggravation
of ties between the two countries.

Mr. Safrastyan noted further worsening of Turkish-Israeli relations
quite probable, whereas Turkish attempts to boost presence in the
region are less feasible.

Why Ex-Speaker’s Brother Withdrew From Race

WHY EX-SPEAKER’S BROTHER WITHDREW FROM RACE
HAKOB BADALYAN

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 15:09:52 – 28/03/2012

The publication of the Republican ticket was followed by press reports
that the ex-speaker Hovik Abrahamyan has restored his influence in
the government. Evidence to it was thought to be its reflection of
intentions of reproduction rather than change.

Additional evidence to this opinion was the sudden nomination of
Hovik Abrahamyan’s brother, Jonik Abrahamyan, in a precinct where
the Republicans supported Karine Poghosyan. Certainly, Poghosyan is
a relation to Abrahamyan but neither his brother, nor his sister.

However, Jonik Abrahamyan withdrew from the race as suddenly as he
had been nominated, and the Republicans did not support him. Why was
Hovik Abrahamyan unable to back his brother?

Maybe he was prevented by Serzh Sargsyan who gave up the idea of
nominating his own brother for parliament.

Did Abrahamyan think that he could do more than Serzh Sargsyan?

Maybe he did, and maybe he even believed the press reports that he
has regained his influence in the Republican Party and pushed his
main opponent Tigran Sargsyan.

However, Hovik Abrahamyan was immediately sent back to his place,
showing that he makes no decisions on his role and place, and the
only person is Serzh Sargsyan who at least has the power to make
such decisions.

However, Hovik Abrahamyan was immediately sent back to his place,
showing that he makes no decisions on his role and place, and the
only person is Serzh Sargsyan who at least has the power to make
such decisions.

However, Serzh Sargsyan did not seem to have more than that, having
to tolerate the mandate expansion of the circle a member of which
Hovik Abrahamyan is, and is even considered as the leader thereof.

Meanwhile, encouraging or even pushing the nomination of Abrahamyan’s
brother was perhaps needed later to force him to withdraw to show that
the rumors on Hovik Abrahamyan’s influence are a little exaggerated.

TURKISH PM SENDS TO COURT WRITTEN DEFENSE ON “MONSTROUS” MONUMENT IN KARS

ISTANBUL. – Mehmet Aksoy, the sculptor of the monument of
“Humanity” which was erected in Kars, Turkey-and which was to
symbolize Armenian-Turkish friendship and peace-, had filed a lawsuit
against Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who had called the monument
“monstrous” and ordered for its dismantling. And Erdogan’s attorneys
have submitted to an Istanbul court the Turkish PM’s written defense
statement for the case.

The defense statement notes that Erdogan was not against the existence
of the monument, but rather against the latter’s location. According
to the written defense, the Turkish PM insulted neither the monument
nor its sculptor, Radikal daily of Turkey informs.

“According to the explanatory dictionary published by the Linguistic
Board of Turkey, the [Turkish] word ‘ucube’ [‘monstrous’], which
Erdogan used, also means ‘very bizarre.’ Artists must be open to
public criticisms toward their creations,” Turkish PM’s written
defense statement also noted.

U.S. PUBLISHER: OBAMA’S ADMINISTRATION PRESSURES ITS COMMISSION TO COVER UP TURKEY

PanARMENIAN.Net
March 28, 2012 – 12:27 AMT

PanARMENIAN.Net – Harut Sassounian, the Publisher of U.S.-based
California Courier, issued an article on U.S. State Department’s
disgraceful censorship of a report blacklisting Turkey.

“Each passing day brings new revelations of the Obama administration’s
shameful schemes to cover up Turkish misconduct,” Sassounian writes
in his article.

“The latest scandal involves the State Department’s covert attempt to
alter the contents of a report by the U.S. Commission on International
Religious Freedom (USCIRF), condemning the Turkish government’s
violations of the religious rights of Christian minorities. USCIRF
is an independent bipartisan federal agency established by the U.S.

Congress to make “recommendations unburdened by foreign policy
considerations other than the defense of religious freedom,” according
to a Commission member.

The Commission issued a lengthy report on March 20, outlining in
great detail “the Turkish government’s systematic and egregious
limitations on the freedom of religion or belief that affect all
religious communities in Turkey, and particularly threaten the
country’s non-Muslim religious minorities.”

The report recommended that the U.S. government designate Turkey as
one of the world’s 16 worst violators of religious freedom, along
with Burma, China, Egypt, Eritrea, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria, North Korea,
Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan,
and Vietnam.

The Commission’s recommendation sharply downgraded Turkey’s status
from a previous “watch” list country to the black list of 16 “Countries
of Particular Concern” (CPC).

As expected, Turkish officials resorted to their usual disparaging
tactics, rejecting the Commission’s findings. Far more troubling were
the insidious actions of turkophiles in the State Department. Nina
Shea, one of the nine USCIRF commissioners, wrote an alarming article
revealing how the Obama administration quietly pressured the commission
to soften its condemnation of Turkey.

Ms. Shea disclosed to the National Review, a major national
publication, that Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights Michael
Posner had forced one of the commissioners to change his position
in Turkey’s favor, after being tipped off by another commissioner,
an Obama appointee, that the Commission had voted 5-4 to black list
Turkey in its annual report. By then, the report had been issued and
it was too late to alter the Commission’s recommendation, designating
Turkey as a major violator of religious freedom. As required, the
report was submitted to Pres. Obama, Secretary of State Clinton,
and Congressional leaders.

It was later revealed that Don Argue, President of Northwest University
in Kirkland, Washington, was the Commissioner who was pressured into
changing his mind on Turkey. Ironically, two days after this report
was issued, the terms of service of Shea, Argue and three other
commissioners ended.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry, reacting sharply to the Commission’s
critical designation of Turkey, declared the report to be “null
and void.” Turkey’s Ambassador to Washington, Namik Tan, described
the report as “politically motivated.” The Commission’s chairman,
Leonard Leo, shrugged off the Turkish protestations. “I don’t really
care what the [Turkish] Foreign Minister thinks, because the report
is not for him, it’s for the State Department,” Leo told the Turkish
Zaman newspaper.

Regrettably, a State Dept. spokesperson persisted in covering up
Turkey’s abusive record when he told EurasiaNet.org: “the Department
does not support Turkey’s CPC designation, although it believes the
country needs to do more to expand religious freedom.”

The Commission’s report included a long list of grave charges,
accusing the Turkish government of denying “full legal status to
religious groups, [and] violating the religious freedom rights of all
religious communities; denying “non-Muslim communities the rights to
train clergy, offer religious education, and own and maintain places of
worship; restricting the religious freedom of “the Greek, Armenian, and
Syriac Orthodox Churches, the Roman Catholic and protestant Churches,
and the Jewish community as well as for the majority Sunni Muslim
community and the country’s largest minority, the Alevis.”

The report described in great detail the restrictions imposed on the
Armenian community, including the Turkish government’s prohibition of
training new clergy, and its interference “in the selection process
of the Armenian Patriarchate’s religious leadership.”

The Commission recommended that the U.S. government urge Turkey to
“abolish Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code which restricts
the freedom of thought and expression and negatively affects the
freedom of religion or belief.” The report also acknowledged that
“even starting a discussion on genocide of Christians that occurred
100 years ago is a criminal offense in Turkey.”

Ironically, after meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan in
South Korea on March 26, Pres. Obama told the media: “I congratulated
the Prime Minister on the efforts that he has made within Turkey to
protect religious minorities!” It is shameful that unscrupulous U.S.
officials are treating a federal agency’s painstaking research and
solid recommendations with such contempt!” the publicist writes.

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s President Serzh Sargsyan, who is on a state
visit to Singapore, met with the country’s leaders on Wednesday.

Singaporean President Tony Tan Keng Yam welcomed Sargsyan at the
Governmental Residence, and then they headed to the Meetings’ Hall,
Armenian President’s Press Office informed Armenian News-NEWS.am. At
the meeting, Tony Tan Keng Yam noted that although diplomatic relations
between Armenia and Singapore were established but a mere twenty years
ago, the history of the two countries’ relations go back to more than
a century. Also, the President of Singapore expressed his country’s
assistance to Armenia, specifically offering experience exchange.

Serzh Sargsyan agreed to this offer, and expressed a desire to utilize
Singapore’s development track-record.

At the same Governmental Residence, Armenia’s President also met
with Singaporean PM, Lee Hsien Loong. The latter likewise recalled
the Singaporean-Armenian community’s important role, and expressed
a wish see the close Armenian-Singaporean economic ties restored.

Safety Summit, which was held in Seoul on Tuesday. In this regard,
the Singaporean PM underscored the attendance to this summit,
specifically noting: “Small countries do not decide a vector of
international relations, but they live with international rules.”

President Serzh Sargsyan Participated In Seoul At The International

PRESIDENT SERZH SARGSYAN PARTICIPATED IN SEOUL AT THE INTERNATIONAL NUCLEAR SUMMIT 2012

27.03.2012

President Serzh Sargsyan, who is in the Republic of Korea on a working
visit, participated today in Seoul at the International Nuclear Summit
2012. At the Summit, President Sargsyan made a statement. First, Serzh
Sargsyan thanked the organizers of the Summit and personally President
Lee Myung-bak for hosting this pivotal for the global security event.

The President of Armenia hailed also continuous efforts of the US
President Barack Obama since the 2010 Summit in Washington.

“Nuclear security has been a priority issue for Armenia. To register
positive results, we have been persistently and readily supporting and
implementing proposed programs, have taken concrete steps to create
monitoring mechanism,” President Serzh Sargsyan underscored. According
to the President, a new law has been adopted regarding export, transit
of dual use goods, including nuclear and radioactive materials,
as well as monitoring of the transfer of dual use information and
results of intellectual activities.

The President of Armenia also noted that in cooperation with
and assistance of the UN Interregional Crime and Justice Research
Institute, Armenia is carrying out a program of personnel retraining
and augmentation of the customs technical devices. In President
Sargsyan’s words, the Republic of Armenia fully endorses the
implementation of the UN SC Resolution 1540.

“At the Washington Summit, we all underscored the critical importance
of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s central role in upholding
nuclear security, preservation and control over radioactive materials.

As a producer of nuclear energy, Armenia is developing a multifaceted
cooperation with the IAEA. Safe use of the Armenian NPS and upgrading
of its safety level, issues of its physical protection, as well
as conservation and control over the radioactive waste are among
priorities of our government. On this issue, we strictly adhere to
the international requirements developed by the Agency for the nuclear
power stations of that generation.

The OSART mission of the IAEA conducted last year also verified full
compliance of the Armenian NPS to these norms,” President of Armenia
Serzh Sargsyan said.

Taking the opportunity, President Sargsyan expressed gratitude
to the IAEA, the Russian Federation, EU and all those countries,
organizations and experts who are cooperating with and assisting
Armenia on this important issue.

Serzh Sargsyan referred also to the disinformation spoken by the
President of Azerbaijan regarding the Armenian Nuclear Power Station.

“As for the disinformation broadcasted here by the President of
Azerbaijan regarding the Armenia NPS, it doesn’t surprise me a bit
because vilification of Armenia has become a modus operandi for
Azerbaijan long ago. Not only every issue related to Armenia and
Nagorno Karabakh is presented from the highest podiums in the most
perverted way but also the documents adopted by the international
community, i.e. by us and by you. Even the UN Security Council
resolutions related to the Nagorno Karabakh conflict are distorted,
neglecting the fact that they were the ones who started the military
actions; they were the ones who refused to cease them, they are the
ones who voice belligerent statements on a daily basis and refuse to
solve the NK issue in accordance with international law,” President
Sargsyan noted.

The President of Armenia said that after disasters on Chernobyl and
Fukusima many currently approach issues related to the future of
nuclear energy with apprehension. According to President Sargsyan,
in some special cases such as Armenia, there is little choice to
ensure sustainable development of our people and improvement of
living standards.

Serzh Sargsyan also noted that it would be appropriate to view all
energy, including nuclear energy security issues in the context of
all contiguous issues. He said that the fight against turning energy
resources into vicious political capital is not less important. Serzh
Sargsyan expressed confidence that the consequences of such policy
are particularly taxing for the countries which do not have natural
energy resources and are compelled to look for the avenues to achieve
energy independence. “Two out of Armenia’s four neighbors, in blatant
violation of international norms have been blockading our country for
the last twenty years, among other things leaving us no alternatives
in achieving energy independence,” President Sargsyan said.

At the conclusion of his speech, the President of Armenia reiterated
Armenia’s commitment to the fight against illegal use of nuclear
material, as well as our country’s determination to support
international efforts in combating terrorism.

A NUMBER OF PUBLIC AND POLITICAL FORCES ARE READY TO PULL DOWN THE TRADE PAVILIONS IN MASHTOTS PARK WITH THEIR OWN HANDS

Tuesday, March 27, 18:50

A number of public and political forces are ready to pull down the
trade pavilions in Mashtots Park with their own hands.

During a meeting on Wednesday they decided to inform the chief of the
police and the Tree Planting Center (the contractor of the project to
build trade pavilions in Mashtots Park) that during a “court hearing”
on Mar 17 they ruled that the municipal authorities should demolish
the pavilions within 10 days and should start improving the area.

The demolition is scheduled for Mar 31 and will have nothing to do with
the action of protest held in the park by the greens since early Feb.
