Two Women And Two Situations

TWO WOMEN AND TWO SITUATIONS

Story from Lragir.am News:

Published: 11:37:23 – 07/04/2012

On the left of this photo is the famous environmentalist Mariam
Sukhudyan, on the right is businesswoman Silva Hambardzumyan. Both
symbolize certain situations. Both struggle for their rights, and both
target nature. Both were beaten for their struggle at different times.

Mariam and her friends struggle for the preservation of the environment
in Armenia, for the protection of every tree, stream, waterfall,
park of Armenia, for the future of Armenia.

Silva Hambardzumyan whom the governor of Syunik Surik Khachatryan
punched in the lobby of a hotel struggles for destroying the
environment, for her quota in the mines.

A lot of women have joined the civil initiative of dismantling the
illegal boutiques in Mashtots Park. A lot of women are involved in
recent different initiatives in Armenia fighting for their basic
Constitutional rights and freedoms, against violence in army,
for passing of a green country of equal opportunities to the next
generation.

Their struggle is not longer unequal, they already have success. They
make real sacrifices, they have left the warm and comfort of their
homes, they are not conformists and they disagree with what is
happening in Armenia, they are not fighting for quotas and personal
interests and the dull congratulations and events of managers are
not for them.

These women are the salt of the country and not fortune seekers under
this system. These women are the hope and opportunity of this country.

Today is the Holiday of Motherhood and Beauty. Happy holiday Mariam
and all the other bright and lively women, all the women and girls of
Armenia who send their men to return with the shield or on the shield,
and not grab a bone from the system. With dignified victory.

What Gall!

WHAT GALL!
BY GAREN YEGPARIAN

asbarez
Friday, April 6th, 2012

This week we have three instances of disgusting gall garnished with
insufferable temerity, to rub our (Armenian) and all of humanity’s
face in the mire of human shamelessness- one hails from Turkey,
the second from Armenia, and the third, from Los Angeles.

On March 31, the LA Times reported (Turkey targets Getty, other
museums, p.1, Jason Felch) that the Republic of Turkey (RoT) is
cracking down on those holding antiquities stolen from its territory.

Who knew? Even the Ottoman Empire (OE) had a 1906 law against this
kind of theft (Isn’t it interesting that in this context, there’s
a presumed continuity between the OE and RoT). This is a legitimate
concern, and is shared by many countries.

Egypt, Greece, and Italy are among those in the news in recent years.

They have been pursuing the return/repatriation of looted statues,
artifacts, etc. The Getty Museum has been at the center of some of
these storms, including the illuminated Armenian manuscript pages
from the Zeytoon bible they currently hold. So the overall situation
is quite understandable.

But there’s something jarring about RoT doing this. Just about anything
of cultural value that might have been unearthed and stolen is not
culturally Turkish. It’s Armenian, Greek, and numerous other cultures’
creation. So it is a situation that resembles, in southern California
terms, a coyote complaining that a crow “stole” some of the food it
had meant to eat. Both are scavengers, thieves. It’s also like the
Armenian saying “koghuh koghen kghtzav, Asdvadz desav, zarmatzav”
(a thief stole from a thief, God saw this and was amazed).

Chalk up another example of Turkish shamelessness and flexing of its
newly developing power as a significant player on the world stage.

Unfortunately, RoT’s not the only shameless outfit. It seems Ankara
has company in Yerevan. Sadly, the Republic of Armenia’s parliament
did not vote for a bill condemning the genocides of Assyrians,
Pontiac Greeks, and others’ at the Ottoman Empire’s hands. Is this
even conceivable? How can something like that fail, as it did,
because of a lack of quorum in parliament? Clearly, the two biggest
players, Prosperous Armenia and Republican parties, wanted it that
way. These people are obviously completely oblivious to the negative
public relations impact and seeming hypocrisy of the situation they
have created!

And just to round out the week of shame, we had Kobe Bryant celebrating
the first anniversary of his shilling for Turkish Airlines. Remember,
the airline is owned by the Turkish government.

Helping the airline helps the RoT. When the Kobe news hit last year,
I’d written that if he doesn’t pull out, I’d advocate a complete
boycott of the Lakers, the team for which he plays basketball. A
year out, I think it’s time- all Armenians should stop watching the
Lakers, live, on TV, or otherwise. We should stop buying all their
paraphernalia. Schools should educate students about the obscenity
of such behavior. And, the Kardashian connection to the Lakers should
be exploited too!

Get busy expressing your disgust at these developments to the
appropriate targets!

The address and answers of Minister Nalbandian during the joint pres

THE ADDRESS AND ANSWERS OF MINISTER NALBANDIAN DURING THE JOINT PRESS CONFERENCE WITH CYPRIOT FOREIGN MINISTER ERATO KOZAKOU-MARCOULLIS

03.04.2012

Hello,

I am pleased to welcome the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Cyprus, who
comes from a country with whom we are tied to age-old friendship and
brotherly relations, which passed the test of time, from a country,
the parliament of which was one of the first ones to recognize and
condemn the Armenian Genocide in 1982, demanding a restoration of
historical justice.

Since the establishment of the diplomatic relations cooperation
between Armenia and Cyprus has been uplifted, which was marked by the
reciprocal state visits of the leaders of the two countries, as well.

Today, we had a thorough talk with Madam Kozakou-Marcoullis on the
ways of further expanding of bilateral relations and the issues of
regional and international agenda.

Talking about our relations, we outlined the significant heritage and
contribution of the Armenian community in Cyprus to the strengthening
of the inter-state cooperation.

Our friend Cyprus will assume the EU presidency on July 1 and in
that context we thoroughly touched upon the Armenia-EU cooperation
and the projects being implemented in that format.

Of course, we could not avoid from the Cypriot issue. Armenia has
never accepted and will not accept the attempts to divide brotherly
Cyprus. The Cypriot issue should find its fair and legal solution
and in this respect we stand by Cyprus.

We touched upon the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue, as well.

I presented my Cypriot counterpart the current negotiations, and the
steps being undertaken by the international community and mediators
towards that direction.

We exchanged views on a number of regional and international issues,
as well.

Once again I would like to welcome the visit of Cypriot Foreign
Minister Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis to Armenia on the eve of the 20th
anniversary of the establishment of our diplomatic relations and to
give the floor to my Cypriot counterpart.

Please.

Question: Minister Nalbandian, after the decision of the Constitutional
Council of France on the bill criminalizing the denial of genocides,
Turkey and Azerbaijan voiced that it was a victory of freedom of
speech. How would you comment it?

Minister Nalbandian: Both Turkey and Azerbaijan are in the last
places in the press freedom index -162 and 148, and it is one of the
main criteria for the freedom of speech. I do not think that these
countries may have the right to give lessons, or tell other countries
what freedom of speech means.

Question: Minister Nalbandian, recently there was an information
that by the mediation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey
Davutoglu and U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton a meeting
between the Armenian President Sargsyan and Azeri President Aliyev
would be initiated. To what extent is this format acceptable for the
Armenian side?

Minister Nalbandian: Regarding to the United States, as a Minsk
Group co-chairing country, the United States undertakes importantly
constructive mediating efforts towards the settlement of the
Nagorno-Karabakh issue. As of the existing or potential Turkish
mediation, I can only say that it is nonsense.

Question: I would like to address my question to the two Ministers.

Two brief questions. Did you discuss the possibility to act together
in international arenas and if yes, over what questions?

Minister Nalbandian: We have very good cooperation in international
arenas and of course, we took this opportunity to reaffirm once
again the willingness to renew more closely cooperation between the
two countries in the near future in the frames of the UN, the OSCE,
the Council of Europe, as well as other international organizations.
