YEREVAN. – The Armenian authorities’ actions in the campaign season
for the forthcoming capital city Yerevan Council election,
specifically in terms of getting votes, are becoming increasingly
funny, Hraparak daily reports.

`In actual fact, this time the election bribe `menu’ is diverse, from
grocery to money.

They recently have distributed eggs in [Yerevan’s] Nork-Marash
community to get votes for the authorities.

According to the voters, they distributed boxes of eggs, which is
equivalent to 5,000 drams [approx. $12], apiece,’ Hraparak writes.

Turkish Foreign Ministry’s says France’s Education Minister’s
statement about Armenian Genocide unacceptable

10:42 – 27.04.13

Turkish Foreign Ministry has described the statement made by French
Education Minister Vincent Peillon at the event dedicated to the
Armenian Genocide anniversary as unacceptable, Turkish Anadolu news
agency reports.

`Armenia’s sons who became sons of France have enriched France with
their work and talent. Their memories are our memories, and we must
ensure that these memories be transferred to the coming generations
and the school and the education system have great role in it,’ the
French minister stated.

Turkish Foreign Ministry claimed that the French minister tried to
blacken their history and sow hatred against Turks.

`Politicizing history and justice contradicts France’s democratic
appearance. Such statements harm the historic relations and friendship
between Turkey and France,’ the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s statement
runs.

Beirut: Armenians commemorate 98th anniversary of genocide

al-Akhbar English, Lebanon

Armenians commemorate 98th anniversary of genocide

Armenians worldwide gathered Wednesday to mark the 98th anniversary of
the mass killings of their kin in the Ottoman Empire during World War
I, which they want recognized internationally as a genocide.

In Armenia, thousands flocked on to a hilltop memorial above Yerevan
for the annual ceremony broadcast by all national television channels
to lay flowers at the eternal flame.

“Today we bow to the memory of innocent victims,” President Serzh
Sarkisian said in a statement.

He attacked modern-day Turkey for refusing to accept that the killings
were genocide – a term strongly rejected by Ankara.

“It is our duty to realize and to bring the attention of the
international community to the fact that denial of the genocide
constitutes direct continuation of that very crime,” said Sarkisian.

In Beirut, several hundred demonstrators from all over Lebanon marched
from the Armenian neighborhood of Bourj Hammoud to Martyr’s Square to
commemorate the massacre with Armenian flags and traditional music.

Family members of the Lebanese pilgrims abducted in Syria were also
present at the march, along with representatives of the Amal and
Hezbollah parties, the National News Agency reported.

Migration Service avoids publishing data

Haykakan Zhamanak: Migration Service avoids publishing data

The Migration Service of Armenia has not yet released statistical data
about the number of people who arrived in Armenia and left the country
in the first three months of this year, `Haykakan Zhamanak’ daily
notes. This index is always published in the middle of the month
following the reporting period. The head of Migration Service Gagik
Yeganian told the newspaper’s correspondent that so far they have not
received this data from the National Statistical Service of Armenia.

`A few days ago we received information that the statistical data of
departures is not published because the picture is shameful. These
statistics approximately show the growth in the number of citizens who
leave Armenia. Delaying the release of this index, statisticians are
trying to `smooth over’a bit the indices or to delay their publication
until the elections to Yerevan Council of Elders,’ the paper writes.

According to the daily, to judge by the data of the first two months
of 2013, the negative balance between the number of those who arrived
and left grew 1.5-fold compared with last year. It means that a
minimum of 70 thousand people leave Armenia annually and about 330
thousand have left the country in the past five years.

Valerie Boyer: `We Must Recognize Nagorno-Karabakh’

Valerie Boyer: `We Must Recognize Nagorno-Karabakh’

Friday, April 26th, 2013

Valery Boyer arrives in Stepanakert on Friday

STEPANAKERT – `We must recognize Nagorno-Karabakh, Karabakh in order to
demonstrate to the world Karabakh’s democracy and to let the people of the
world know that the people of Karabakh want to live free and independent,’
said French member of Parliament Valery Boyer on Friday during her second
visit to the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, reported RFE/RL.

Boyer, who is the author of the French bill criminalizing the denial of the
Armenian Genocide, is also a founding member of the France-Karabakh
Friendship Group, which was inaugurated last month.
`By creating the France-Karabakh Friendship Group, we have set our goal to
recognize Karabakh and to secure conditions for the people of that country
to live freely,’ added Boyer.

Boyer is part of delegation of European legislators who are on a
fact-finding mission to Karabakh and upon arrival in Stepanakert began
visiting the sites and engaged in meetings with Karabakh officials.

`We continue to be your humble servants, and are awaiting your direction,’
said European Parliament member from Greece Eleni Teokharus, who is also
part of the delegation.

Teokharus first visited Karabakh 25 years ago as a volunteer surgeon.
Visiting Karabakh today, she said that Artsakh is her second home.

`But for me Artsakh is neither a motherland nor a fatherland. It is like
a
new-born child, whom I cuddle and care for as a mother, because from its
birth it has had difficulties. Despite this, it is now a struggling
Democracy,’ said Teokharus.

`Today we are here to defend the people of Nagorno-Karabakh’s right to
self-determination. Regardless of which principle supersedes the other in
the eyes of international law, but the day will come when we, in Europe,
and the rest of the world will comprehend that people’s right to
self-determination is of utmost importance,’ added the Greek legislator.

The European delegation was greeted by Nagorno-Karabakh Republic Parliament
Speaker Ashot Ghulian who expressed the gratitude of the people of Artsakh
for the cooperation and the belief in Karabakh’s democracy by his European
colleagues, reported the Aparaj newspaper, which is the official organ of
the Armenian Revolutionary Federation Central Committee of Artsakh.

The discussions centered on strengthening of legislative diplomatic ties.
The importance of creating parliamentary friendship groups and mutual
visits was highlighted.

Leaders of Karabakh parliamentary blocs Gagik Petrosian, Janna Galstian and
Armen Sargsyan also took part in the meetings. The chairman of the
Armenia’s Parliamentary Committee of Foreign Relations, Artak Zakaryan and
parliament member Tevan Poghosyan accompanied the delegation to Artsakh.

Police chief’s statement inspires positive hope – criminalist

Police chief’s statement inspires positive hope – criminalist

16:47 – 26.04.13

An Armenian criminalist writing fiction about mobsters says the police
chief’s Thursday interview with media representatives in Gyumri seems
to be signaling a landmark developments.

`I do want to believe that it is really so,’ Sergey Galoyan told
Tert.am on Friday, adding that he very much wishes Vladimir
Gasparyan’s speech to have serious consequences in future.

In his Thursday intervew, Gasparyan condemned the recent shoot-out
incident in the second largest city, saying that the two clans (the
family of former mayor Vardan Ghukasyan and the team supporting Martun
Ghukasyan, a parliament member of the Prosperous Armenia party) will
have either to come to their senses or be isolated from the society.

Asked whether he thinks there are no other mafia bosses in Gyumri, the
criminalist said that he considers the above two `clans’ the major
mobsters.

`We are a small country, in terms of our territory, so it wouldn’t be
normal to lead a vendetta,’ he answered.
