Soccer: Shakhtar Cruise To Gold As Metalist Make History

SHAKHTAR CRUISE TO GOLD AS METALIST MAKE HISTORY

Premium Official News
May 29, 2013 Wednesday

The Federation of International Football Association has issued the
following news release:

After comfortably winning the league title for the fourth year in a
row, Shakhtar Donetsk are now firmly ensconced as the top club in
Ukrainian football. Led by Romanian coach Mircea Lucescu, who has
been involved in virtually all their triumphs over the past decade,
Shakhtar dominated the 2012/13 campaign, leading from beginning to
end and finishing a whole 13 points clear of their nearest pursuers.

And while the champions would live up to their tag of pre-season
favourites, the country’s most successful team, Dynamo Kyiv, left
fans disenchanted after failing to finish in the top two and missing
out on the UEFA Champions League for the first time in 20 years. Even
more surprisingly, Dynamo’s most recent campaign coincided with the
return of legendary coach Oleg Blokhin, who stepped down as Ukraine
boss in September 2012 in order to take the job.

Instead, for the first time in the history of the Ukrainian Premier
League, runners-up spot went to Metalist Kharkiv. Under the tutelage
of Myron Markevych, the club finally broke up the Dynamo-Shakhtar
duopoly after finishing third behind the big two for the previous
six seasons. Now the outfit from Kharkiv are preparing to make their
debut in the Champions League, starting in the qualifying rounds.

Stand-out players

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (Shakhtar Donetsk), 24. An Armenian international
and defensive midfielder, Mkhitaryan moved to Shakhtar Donetsk in
August 2010. Though nominally an enforcer in a side where Brazilians
have traditionally set the tone going forward, Mkhitaryan had people
talking about his creative skills during the 2011/12 campaign, when
he scored ten league goals and was voted the club’s player of the year.

That was not altogether surprising, given that, aged 14, Henrikh
spent time at Brazilian giants Sao Paulo, where he played alongside
the likes of Lucas Moura, Hernanes, Oscar and Denilson.

During the 2012/13 season, the Armenian’s goalscoring talents
blossomed even further, with his 26 goals not only topping the charts
and setting a new league record, but also matching the club record
set by the legendary Vitaliy Starukhin. Understandably, several top
European clubs are keen to acquire his signature, even if Shakhtar
are hopeful that Mkhitaryan will still be on board when they embark
on their Champions League adventure next season.

Fernandinho (Shakhtar Donetsk), 28. One of the older members of
Shakhtar’s sizeable Brazilian contingent, midfielder Fernandinho had
much more modest stats – two goals and six assists – to show for his
season’s work. For all that, the contribution of this cerebral and
passionate player to the club’s recent success cannot be understated,
especially after his compatriot Willian left to join Russia’s Anzhi
Makhachkala.

Cleiton Xavier (Metalist Kharkiv), 30. A key protagonist for this
season’s runners-up, Xavier also finished the campaign as the
club’s top striker, with 15 goals and six assists to this name. A
classic No10, Xavier has been so adept this season as the team’s
orchestrator-in-chief that fans quickly forgot the departure of fellow
Brazilian Taison to Shakhtar during the winter break.

Andriy Yarmolenko (Dynamo Kyiv), 23. Given that this season was
Dynamo’s most disappointing in 20 years, the progress of a youngster
who has come up through the ranks brought some welcome consolation to
supporters. Without Yarmolenko’s contribution, including 11 goals and
five assists, Dynamo would likely have struggled to defeat Borussia
Monchengladbach to qualify for the group stage of the 2012/13 Champions
League and subsequently go on to finish third in the league.

Normally played on the left wing for the Ukrainian national team as
well as Dynamo, Yarmolenko is one of his country’s best hopes for
the future.

Key moments

15 July 2012. In the first round of Premier League matches, Shakhtar
host Arsenal Kyiv and emphatically defeat them 6-0. The win takes
them straight to the top of the table on goal difference, where they
remain for the rest of the season. Another 14 straight wins then
follow before they drop their first points of the season, away to
Arsenal on Matchday 16.

24 September 2012. Dynamo Kyiv sack manager Yuri Semin after a series
of disappointing results. Although the capital side have only lost
two league matches up until then – a 1-0 defeat to lowly Vorskla and a
3-1 reverse at the home of arch-rivals Shakhtar – a rout at the hands
of Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League and, more crucially,
a 4-1 loss to Shakhtar in Ukrainian Cup prove his undoing.

After appointing Blokhin as his replacement, Dynamo drop another
eight points in their next four games, a spell that includes losses
to direct rivals Metalist and Dnipro, leaving them trailing Shakhtar
by all of 14 points.

1 February 2013. Shakhtar sell star player Willian to Anzhi for a
reported 35 million Euros in what is the most expensive signing of
Europe’s January transfer window. To replace him, Shakhtar bring in
fellow Brazilian Taison from Metalist. The upheaval does not affect
Shakhtar’s domestic form, although shortly afterwards they do crash
out of the Champions League in the Round of 16 to eventual finalists
Borussia Dortmund.

7 April 2013. Shakhtar beat Dynamo 2-1 in Kyiv in what is their first
win at Dynamo since 2004/05 and the first time in five years they have
scored in an away game against their fierce rivals. Shakhtar’s top
striker, Henrikh Mkhitaryan, nets both goals. Three weeks later, on
28 April, Shakhtar secure their eighth title with four games to spare.

3 May 2013. Metalist Kharkiv prevail 2-0 in a crunch meeting with
Dynamo and move to second in the table. Metalist’s top forwards,
Cleiton Xavier and Marko Devic, the latter just back at the club
after an unproductive spell at Shakhtar, both find a way past Dynamo’s
young goalkeeper, Maksym Koval. Two matches later, Myron Markevych’s
team secure a second-place finish guaranteeing them Champions League
football next season.

SETTLEMENT OF NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT TO PROMOTE SOUTH CAUCASUS STABILITY – ALIYEV

ITAR-TASS, Russia
May 29, 2013 Wednesday 05:24 PM GMT+4

– Settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict will help ensure
prosperity and stability in the South Caucasus, Azerbaijan’s
President Ilham Aliyev said here on Wednesday, addressing the
Azerbaijani-American Forum “Vision of the Future”.

“The Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is the biggest threat to regional
peace. The region must be stable, secure and more integrated,”
the president said. He noted that international efforts aimed at
settlement of the conflict “have not yet yielded results.” “We hope,
however, that the conflict will be settled thanks to the efforts of
the OSCE Minsk Group,” Aliyev said.

He noted that Azerbaijan and the United States are partners in matters
of ensuring security in the region and the world. “We interact as
regards ensuring global security. Azerbaijan is a reliable partner
of the United States in the region and we corroborate in this by
practical deeds,” the president went on. He said, specifically, that
40 percent of cargoes of the coalition forces meant for Afghanistan
are carried via Azerbaijan’s territory. “This is the most stable way,”
Aliyev added. He also stressed that the fight against international
terrorism and ensurance of Europe’s energy security are important
aspects of cooperation of the two countries.

Regarding the Southern Gas Corridor project, the president noted that
it makes it possible “to bring Azerbaijan’s huge energy resources to
the European markets,” to diversify gas delivery sources and increase
the country’s export potential. “This stream of gas will not go to the
American market directly, but the United States supports this project,
as it promotes diversification of gas sources, and Azerbaijan is a
new source of gas,” Aliyev added.

The forum is attended by representatives of 42 US states -senators and
congressmen, influential politicians, experts, and political analysts.

The debates focus on prospects for bilateral relations, energy
cooperation, Eurasian security, and other questions.

Public Services Regulatory Commission Fails To Conduct Proper Hearin

PUBLIC SERVICES REGULATORY COMMISSION FAILS TO CONDUCT PROPER HEARING ON GAS TARIFF GROWTH – ACTIVIST

13:32 ~U 30.05.13

The Public Services Regulatory Commission has no wish to listen to
the opinion of the people, activist of Let’s Prevent Gas Price Growth
initiative Aram Grigoryan said speaking to reporters today.

Referring to the discussion organized in the Commission relating to
gas price growth, the activist said the establishment has not ensured
opportunity for the public to hear the discussions.

“The hall was small, only limited number of people was there, there
was no microphone. As a result the chairman of the commission stopped
the discussion. The commission has no style of working with public,”
Grigoryan said, adding that the establishment had to state about the
change of tariff after organizing public hearings and not before it.

ArmRusgasprom applied to the Public Services Regulatory Commission
offering 67% rise of the gas tariff. At the May 16 cabinet sitting
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan stated that the government is ready
to subsidize 30% of the gas price. Later the Commission decided to
raise the gas tariff by 18% and electricity tariff by 25%.

Aram Grigoryan stressed that they demand presenting to the public
the document that proves that Russia has raised the gas tariff on
the border. He stressed that they are going to send a letter to the
Government and the President about inactiveness of the Commission
and stress the necessity of discussing its further activity.

Expert of the sphere Karen Vardanyan noted that they have sent today a
letter to the head of the PM’s staff asking to provide the government’s
session hall for organization of public hearings.

Pre-parliament member Vardan Hakobyan said it is strange that having
90 days for establishing gas tariff the Commission hurries to solve
the issue till June 10 without listening to people’s opinions.

“But they will not succeed. Public discussions must be held. Armenia
is a social country in such country people cannot pay more for gas
than their pension is. Government, if you do not have an alternative
to settle the issue, you should resign!” he said, promising to fight
against increase of gas tariff till the end.

Men Accused Of Mataghis Case Finally Acquitted

MEN ACCUSED OF MATAGHIS CASE FINALLY ACQUITTED

The price was 9 years in prison On May 29 Court of Cassation dismissed
the appeal of the Military Prosecutor’s Office against the decision
of the Appeals Court which had earlier acquitted Razmik Sargsyan,
Musa Seroyan and Arayik Chalyan. They were accused of the famous
case of Mataghis involving death of people. The Court considered the
arguments of the prosecutor’s office unreasonable and insufficient.

Note that on March 26 the Court of Appeals acquitted the three convicts
who had served in jail 9 years.

Those who killed two servicemen have not been identified yet, as well
as those who helped them to avoid responsibility and contributed to
unlawful charges against the three men.

Lawyer Haik Alumyan said the Mataghis case is not finished. He will
be Movses Mkrtumyan’s advocate, the father of one of those victims
Hovsep Mkrtumyan. I hope that a new investigation will reveal the
real murderers, said Haik Alumyan.

The website of Journalists for Human Rights NGO writes that it was
possible to win the trial which lasted more than 10 years thanks to
the consistency of the civil society, which rejected the accusation
of innocent people.

168 Zham: Prosperous Armenia Party Is Disuniting?

168 ZHAM: PROSPEROUS ARMENIA PARTY IS DISUNITING?

May 30, 2013

YEREVAN. – Some members of the non-pro-government Prosperous Armenia
Party (PAP) are demanding that PAP Chairman Gagik Tsarukyan discharge
three PAP MPs from the party, 168 Zham daily reports.

“They are accused of violating party discipline, [and] not carrying
out the party [National Assembly] faction’s decision to vote against
the government program.

[But] in reality, the representatives of a party wing are attempting
to clean PAP from the unwanted elements; from those who consider the
PAP’s mission to be cooperation with the authorities.

These [three] men became PAP members by considering the circumstance
of PAP being a [ruling] coalition party.

[But] these MPs deny the fact of the existence of inner-party
discontent in connection with them,” 168 Zham writes.
