Azerbaijan’s Greatest Problems Are With Russia – Armenian Political

AZERBAIJAN’S GREATEST PROBLEMS ARE WITH RUSSIA – ARMENIAN POLITICAL SCIENTIST

June 12, 2013 | 14:28

YEREVAN. – An unprecedented domestic political situation is brewing
in Azerbaijan and, first and foremost, this is expressed by President
Ilham Aliyev’s running for a third term in office.

Caucasus Institute Deputy Director, political analyst Sergey Minasyan
noted the abovementioned during a press conference on Wednesday.

According to him, Azerbaijan’s difference with Georgia, Armenia, and
Nagorno-Karabakh-and in terms of carrying out democratic reforms-is
quite apparent.

“When the president of the neighboring country prepares for a third
presidential term, this means the country politically departs from
South Caucasus and turns into something deep in Central Asia,”
Minasyan noted.

He added that Azerbaijan’s socioeconomic problems in connection with
a reduction in the oil sales revenue likewise reflect on what is
happening in the country.

Also, the analyst invited attention on Azerbaijan’s foreign political
problems, which are due to the country’s deteriorating relations with
all its neighboring countries.

“But Azerbaijan’s greatest problems are with Russia. This fact has
already impacted the unprecedented growth in the Armenian-Russian
militaro-tactical and political cooperation,” Sergey Minasyan said,
and concluded:

“The political autumn will be very interesting; I would say even
unprecedented in Azerbaijan.”

THE AUSTRIAN PRINCESS LISTENS TO ARAM KHACHATURYAN, ADMIRES YOUNG PEOPLE OF ARMENIA AND TASTES THE ARMENIAN CUISINE

June 10 2013

The 9th International Competition named after Aram Khachaturyan is
held in Yerevan, which, this year, is dedicated to detection of young
cellists. The Austrian Princess Irina zu Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg
was among the honored guests of the competition. Aravot.am had the
exclusive opportunity to conduct an interview with the Princess. It
is presented below: – You were in Armenia years ago. What was Armenia
then and how will you describe our country as of today? – The last
time I was in Armenia was 5 years ago. Now I see a lot of changes. The
first thing that attracted me during these days, was the Armenian
young people. I do not know, maybe during my previous visit I missed
something, but this time I see fresh, bright and young atmosphere
in Yerevan. Five years ago, there was no vivacity in the streets
of Yerevan, the city was not so crowded. Now your city has become
a multi-color, younger, new buildings are being built …. And it’s
not accidental that I’m talking about young people, because the mood
in every country is reflected among the youth. – Are you fond of Aram
Khachaturyan’s music. What attracts you most in those works. – I like
romantic music. And Khachaturyan’s works simply touch your soul and
heart, make you become a dreamy. Yeah, I’m romantic and I think that
people in Armenia are too romantic. There is something special in the
air of your country. Isn’t it? – The main directions of the foreign
policy in Armenia is the European integration. Getting into contact
with our culture and traditions, what do you think are we carriers
of more European, or Asian culture. – The Armenian traditions have
deep roots. We have much to learn from you. A few days ago I attended
one of your wonderful museums where ancient manuscripts are kept,
and I am very much impressed because I saw the reflection of European
history in that culture. Learn about your culture, history, thinkers
and philosophers, I realize that the European culture has deep roots in
your own land. – You’re coming from the royal family. Taking into into
account all luxury and benefits of the status, are there moments that
you have to sacrifice. – More precisely, I am from the ruling family,
because having aristocratic roots, at the same time I have seen a lot
of difficulties. From time to time, my family has lost lands because
of the war and has to start everything all over again. I think the
most important thing is to preserve the traditions. We were brought
up to the ideology that we should be proud of our family, parents and
traditions. To have a good education has a great role in this issue.

And a good education is not only a problem of money because now there
are the best chances for it. We have to think from the prospective
that we can change the world. My hope is the youth, and there are
bright young people in Armenia. I’m feeling good in your country.

Armenians are very hospitable, your national dishes are so tasty. And
the monuments … I visited a monastery that was located on the
border with Azerbaijan, the mountain top. It is so close to the sky,
it was enough to stretch your hand and you can touch God. Those are
my best memories. – Have you heard about the Armenian Genocide held
by the Ottoman Empire in the early of 20th century and what is your
position on this issue? – I have heard about it and read much. And
I think we should constantly talk about it and move the process
of recognizing and condemning the crime forward. We must fight and
condemn one of the world’s most tragic events of the 20th century. I
do not know how I can help, but the most important thing for me is
to talk much about the fact, and to find ways on how to bring the
culture and problems into our framework. In every way, we must not
let such a thing happen again. And only through good education can
withhold mankind from such tragic phenomena. Tatev HARUTYUNYAN

Hovik Abrahamyan’s Sensational Statement

HOVIK ABRAHAMYAN’S SENSATIONAL STATEMENT

Today the National Assembly continues discussion of the draft law on
tax and customs allowances for the project of Dilijan International
School. MPs are dissatisfied with the lack of a clear plan. Deputy
finance minister Suren Karayan said yesterday the plan is to be made
later once the parliament adopts the law.

In his speech, Hovik Abrahamyan said that the project is important
for Armenia, at least in this phase when the government is criticized
for lack of investments. The speaker expressed concern about the lack
of plan urging the government to produce one.

Hovik Abrahamyan wondered who is going to control imported goods,
the amount of it and the demand for them. He noted that the State
Revenue Committee should exercise strict control over the process.

Hovik Abrahamyan called on MPs to inform the government whether they
have acquaintances who are ready to invest in Armenia.

He said that the government should grant tax allowances to such
projects. He said that in Georgia, for example, the municipality
allocates land plots free of charge for people to make investments. He
asked whether there are similar examples in Yerevan. He underlined the
importance of this amendment also for the creation of new jobs. Hovik
Abrahamyan said the parliament could sit and discuss to grant or not
to grant tax allowances as soon as there are enough investors.

$2 M GIFT TO UCLA COTSEN INST. ESTABLISHES PROGRAM IN ARMENIAN ARCHAEOLOGY, ETHNOGRAPHY

12:27, 11 June, 2013

YEREVAN, JUNE 11, ARMENPRESS: The UCLA Cotsen Institute of Archaeology
has received a $2 million gift from UCLA alumna Zaruhy Sara Chitjian to
establish the first permanent research program in Armenian archaeology
and ethnography at a major American university, rports Armenpress.

Chitjian also donated a significant collection of artifacts, documents
and books related to the history and material culture of Armenia and
to the Armenian diaspora after the Armenian genocide of 1915~V23.

The Hampartzoum and Ovsanna Chitjian Collection and Archive of Armenian
Ethnographic Artifacts and Documents, named in honor of Chitjian’s
parents, will be housed at the Cotsen Institute and digitized, giving
scholars around the world access to this important resource.

Gregory E. Areshian, assistant director of the Cotsen Institute,
has been appointed director of the new Chitjian Collection and
Research Program.

The gift will enable an expansion of research projects in Armenian
archaeology and ethnography, the establishment of a public lecture
series, and the publication of scholarly works on the Web and in print.

It will also fund seminars and graduate-student conferences devoted to
topics in Armenian archaeology, anthropology, ethnography and history
and to the preservation of the cultural heritage of historic Armenia
and the Armenian diaspora.

“The collection represents a set of objects and letters that will
provide an invaluable insight into the Armenian diaspora,” said Charles
Stanish, director of the Cotsen Institute. “Each acquisition not only
provides insight into a small portion of this tragic but heroic drama
but also provides a window into dozens of new questions and areas of
inquiry. We hope that the Hampartzoum and Ovsanna Chitjian Collection
will be a model for others to emulate.”

A retired schoolteacher, Chitjian earned her bachelor’s degree in child
psychology and her teaching credential from UCLA. She has received
numerous awards and honors for her work and for her dedication to
Armenian issues, past and present.

She continues to fund research and student scholarships throughout the
world. In 2003, she published a memoir of her father’s experiences
as an Armenian genocide survivor and his journey to safety on foot
through eastern Turkey.

More than 1 million Armenians are estimated to have been killed
during and after World War I, when the Ottoman Empire systematically
exterminated and removed Armenian subjects from their historic homeland
in territory that constitutes part of the present-day Republic of
Turkey. The majority of Armenian diaspora communities were founded
as a result of this genocide.

Chitjian also funded the establishment of Aramazd, The Armenian Journal
of Near Eastern Studies, the first Armenia-based, Englishlanguage,
peer-reviewed international journal on the archaeology, ancient and
medieval history, and linguistics of Armenia, the Caucasus, Iran,
Turkey and the broader Near East. “With the work at the Cotsen
Institute of Archaeology, the Armenian identity and Armenian people
~W past and present ~W can be respected and appreciated for the
contributions of their 3,000 year history,” Chitjian said. “Studying
the ethnographic artifacts of recent age is an important means of
understanding the past of this still thriving culture.”

Turquie : Erdogan Joue La Carte De La Victimisation

fin prochaine”, commente Mme Mert.

explique Mme Mert.

RUBEN SAFRASTYAN: RIOTS IN TURKEY MIGHT TURN AGAINST ETHNIC AND RELIGIOUS MINORITIES – VIDEO

“Radiolur”

The riots in Turkey indicate that the political life of the country
has irreversibly entered a new stage, Director of the Oriental Studies
Institute of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences Ruben Safrastyan
told reporters today.

According to him, the new stage in Turkey’s political life will have
far-reaching consequences. The Occupy Gezi movement was a good lesson
for the Erdogan-led Justice and Development Party, which made the
authorities take account of the public opinion, Safrastyan said.

The events in Turkey precede the presidential and local self-government
elections expected in Turkey next year. Before that the country is
set to adopt a new Constitution, which will strengthen the role of
the president’s institute.

The latest developments come to prove that PM Erdogan’s aspirations
for presidency may remain unrealized, as he’s unable to listen to
the voice of the society.

The rallies the supporters of the Justice and Development Party
intend to organize in Ankara and Istanbul may lead to unpredictable
consequences in case of clashes with the protesters in Gezi Park.

Taking into account the lessons of history, Safrastyan does not
rule out that the current riots might turn against the national and
religious minorities, and the danger should not be ignored.
