Soccer: Liverpool To Pursue Mkhitaryan Deal

LIVERPOOL TO PURSUE MKHITARYAN DEAL

Liverpool are pressing ahead with plans to sign Shakhtar Donetsk’s
Armenia international Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

Mkhitaryan, who scored 25 goals from midfield for Shakhtar in the
Ukrainian Premier League last season, is available for around £20
million.

The 24-year-old, who is under contract with Shakhtar until 2015, has
been linked with Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City in the past,
and is believed to be attracting the attention of Borussia Dortmund.

Liverpool’s owners Fenway Sports Group have not been put off by
the player’s price tag, and are prepared to sanction the signing
of Mkhitaryan, who was Armenia’s player of the year in 2009, 2011
and 2012.

Mkhitaryan is expected to leave Shakhtar this summer, having reportedly
stated in March that he “will do everything this summer to join one
of the strongest clubs in the world”, although he later claimed that
he had been misquoted.

The midfielder, who began his career in his homeland with Pyunik
Yerevan, moved to Ukraine to join Metalurh Donetsk in 2009, before
crossing the city to join Shakhtar a year later.

Liverpool, who have signed centre-back Kolo Toure on a free transfer
from Manchester City and have agreed a £7.7m deal in principle for
Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas, are pursuing a number of other options.

The club are in negotiations with Sunderland for £10m-rated goalkeeper
Simon Mignolet, while reports in Spain suggest a £6.8m deal is close
for Sevilla forward Luis Alberto. Liverpool are also looking to bring
in Sporting Lisbon defender Tiago Ilori.

Shakhtar Donetsk play-maker wanted by host of top clubs

Share on print Share on email LIVERPOOL have a fight on their hands
if they are to win the race to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The attacking midfielder from Shakhtar Donetsk is a target for manager
Brendan Rodgers but the Reds face a battle to secure his services.

Mkhitaryan will cost Liverpool around £20m but their biggest challenge
will be in seeing off the interest from a host of top European clubs
said to be preparing bids for him.

The Armenian has attracted the attention of a number of sides after
his performances in this season’s Champions League for Donetsk.

Mkhitaryan scored 25 goals in the Ukrainan league in the last campaign
and is seen as the ideal player to help add the extra “20 goals” that
Rodgers believes will push them towards Champions League qualification.

The lack of European football at Anfield next summer could be another
stumbling block in Liverpool’s pursuit of the talented 24-year-old.

Earlier in the campaign, Mkhitaryan was said to have caught the
attention of Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City although it
remains unclear if they are keen.

But Liverpool’s interest is real and should they manage to bring the
Donetsk star to Merseyside then it will be seen as statement of intent
as well as a reminder as to the pulling power of the club.

A three-time Armenian player of the year, Mkhitaryan said it was his
wish to play for “one of the strongest clubs in the world” earlier
this season.

Fabio Borini, meanwhile, scored the goal which has taken Italy
under-21s into the European Championship final.

The striker scored with 11 minutes to go against Holland to set up
a final with Spain tomorrow night.

“It was definitely one of my most important goals this season,”
said Borini.

“I also scored an important one when I returned from injury (against
Newcastle in April), but this is more significant because it means
we are through to face a great team in the final.”

OPPOSITION ARMENIAN MP CRITICAL OF CONTROL CHAMBER CHAIRMAN

Zaruhi Postanjyan, an MP from the Heritage party, is sure that the
Control Chamber did not report all the violations, and Yerevan Mayor
Taron Margaryan and Control Chamber Chairman Ishkhan Zakaryan play
their roles.

According to her, Zakaryan is not only aware of all the facts, but
is also “embarrassed.”

“If the report is not a show and Zakaryan is not a scriptwriter,
he should have presented the report will all the details. You feel
embarrassed because you live in a grand private house, with others
investing in it,” he said.

Postanjyan touched on the Yerevan mayor’s “fortune” and the
prosecutor’s office inactivity.

“When a person makes a fortune in a few years, we would be happy
if our citizens would become rich in few years. But when the mayor
makes a fortune with a monthly salary of a few hundred dollars,
we understand that it is abuse,” she said.

JUNE 17, 20:13

A debut single of Armenian-Belgian R&B Keyoh (Karine Ohanian) is
available on YouTube.

“This single will make them form a coherent picture of me. I wrote the
lyrics and music based on my personal experience. That is, I went
through all of this. Of course, my producer Guy Waku also played a
role. He turned the song into an ideal one,” Karine told in an
interview with NEWS.am STYLE.

Eight Armenians participated in creation of the video. The main hero
is Armenian-Belgian boxer.

“The video is rather feminist. It shows female power over a strong
man. But, finally, love decides everything,” she said.

Initiative Protecting Women Rights Held Action Near Prosecutor Gener

INITIATIVE PROTECTING WOMEN RIGHTS HELD ACTION NEAR PROSECUTOR GENERAL’S OFFICE (PHOTO)

June 17, 2013 | 13:30

YEREVAN. – Armenia-based “Coalition to Stop Violence Against Women”
on Monday held protest action near the Prosecutor General’s Office
in connection with an investigation into “suicide” committed by
20-year-old Maro Guloyan (photos).

The protesters were carrying “Maro did not commit suicide”, “To punish
tyrant”, “Women, learn your rights” posters.

A 20-year-old Maro Gulayan died in 2012 in the house of her husband.

According to the official line, she committed a suicide by hanging
herself in the bathroom. Her relatives and friends are confident that
the girl was killed.

Criminal proceedings were instituted based on Article 110 (causing
somebody to commit suicide or make an attempt at a suicide by indirect
willfulness or by negligence, by means of threat, cruel treatment
or regular humiliation of one’s dignity). This means Maro’s husband,
who was reportedly beating her permanently, will be sentenced to only
a three-year imprisonment. In April police decided to close a case.

The statement released by the initiative group says they will struggle
to restore justice and protect rights of women in Armenia.

Prosperous Armenia Party Leader To Become PM? – Newspaper

PROSPEROUS ARMENIA PARTY LEADER TO BECOME PM? – NEWSPAPER

June 18, 2013 | 07:29

YEREVAN. – According to the rumors being spread in the political
backstage, the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP) could return to the
ruling coalition and PAP Chairman Gagik Tsarukyan could be appointed
PM, 168 Zham daily reports.

“The PAP’s return to the coalition may resolve several geopolitical
matters. The European Union [EU] Eastern Partnership Project’s
[Lithuanian capital city] Vilnius summit will be convened in November,
where Armenia is to sign the [Armenia-EU] Deep and Comprehensive
Free Trade Agreement. This, in fact, may be viewed as a goodbye to
the Eurasian Union.

But if PAP becomes a member in the ruling coalition and Gagik
Tsarukyan [becomes] PM, we could expect just the opposite: a goodbye
to European integration and a green light to the Eurasian Union,”
168 Zham daily writes.

Armenia’s Oligarchs Do Not Have Guts To Work Legally – Opposition MP

ARMENIA’S OLIGARCHS DO NOT HAVE GUTS TO WORK LEGALLY – OPPOSITION MP

June 18, 2013 | 13:56

YEREVAN. – Gaining half the profits by working lawfully is more
convenient for the oligarchs than working with high profits but under
risks, not being sure that they will not be arrested tomorrow.

Opposition Armenian National Congress bloc National Assembly (NA)
Faction Secretary Aram Manukyan stated the aforesaid on Tuesday at NA.

In his words, the system of kickbacks and misappropriations is
coordinated and overseen in Armenia.

“This system does not allow anyone to work freely and honestly,”
Manukyan said.

As per the opposition MP, 50 percent of Armenia’s GDP is in the hands
of thirty families, and the external debt/GDP ratio has reached the
dangerous 44-percent level in the country.

“This is the fringe where any country can adopt us,” Aram Manukyan
noted.

He added that those emigrating from Armenia have started to take even
their tools and equipment along with them.
