Armenian Environmentalist Concerned Over Fish Species

ARMENIAN ENVIRONMENTALIST CONCERNED OVER FISH SPECIES

18:46 ~U 19.06.13

The environmentalist Inga Zarafyan is concerned over the destruction
trout and other endemic species of fish by newly constructed
hydro-power plants.

“This is a most complicated system. Fish need fish as much as rivers
need fish,” she told Tert.am.

“We do not control the situation. The water level falls and fish cannot
stay there. As a result, we lose both rivers and the animal world,”
she said.

Scientists raised the problem and demanded prohibition of the
construction of hydro-power plants on Lake Sevan. However, Armenia’s
parliament has to date frozen the issue.

According to Zarafyan, what is being done now is being done in
business interests.

“The financial mechanisms are very effective in favor of particular
HPPs and bureaucrats’ pockets and international organizations,”
Zarafyan said.

To Protect A "Foreign Race"

TO PROTECT A “FOREIGN RACE”

June 18 2013

Yesterday, the Women’s Rights Defenders held a demonstration at the
Prosecutor’s Office. The demonstration was focused on 20-year-old Maro
Guloyan’s case, which, according to the official version, hung herself
in her own bathroom. The case was filed as a criminal case, which,
however, was quashed and, thus, the investigation body extending the
case for about a year, found out that Maro’s husband, Gevorg Guloyan,
did not anyhow contribute to the ‘suicide’. Nevertheless, people
gathered at the Prosecutor’s Office believed that he had contributed
to the suicide by using violence and humiliations against the wife.

The issue, of course, is a legal one, there should not be any
preconceived attitude. Another circumstance is quite attractive:
usually the Women’s Rights Defenders NGOs, especially, deserve a
negative attitude from a part of the society. Such approaches are
usually demonstrated by three public groups: a/ by advocates of
“traditional national values”, who believe that only ‘grant-eaters’
are engaged in human rights defend, and the so-called “European
value” is simply an exhortation of immorality, b/ by men based on
‘sexual solidarity’, c/ by mothers-in-law as sponsor and organizer
of domestic violence. The first and last groups are hopeless: if
a person believes that violence is a national value, or, believes
that she is going to reimburse her own suffering when once she was
a daughter-in-law by torturing her own daughter-in-law, it is very
difficult to dissuade these two groups. I hope for men. Have you
noticed no men ever participate in such demonstrations? They probably
consider it something like a betrayal of masculine race. Whereas,
when you see that a representative of your group, in this case of
your gender, has done something wrong, this, I’m sure, increases
the value of your group (gender). Therefore, men should protect
women’s rights, those with white complexion should fight against
racial discrimination, and vice versa, the Christians should strive
for Muslims to be able to freely express their religious feelings,
and vice versa, the same for Sunni and Shiites, Catholics and
Protestants. We, having normal orientation, should protest when the
advocates of “traditional national values” attack a cafe, where, in
their opinion, homosexuals are gathered. The supporters of power and
those indifferent to the policy must fight for the young opposition
Tigran Arakelyan to set free a day early. And Tigran after becoming
free must fight that no policeman has a nose bleeding. It is very
easy to protect a representative of your own group, gang, sex and
race. It is much more difficult to protect just a human Aram ABRAHAMYAN

Crimean Tatars Oppose Ukraine’s Genocide Recognition Bill

CRIMEAN TATARS OPPOSE UKRAINE’S GENOCIDE RECOGNITION BILL

Monday, June 17th, 2013

Mustafa Dzhemilev

KIEV-A bill recognizing the Armenian Genocide introduced in Ukraine’s
Parliament has angered the chairman of so-called Mejlis of the Crimean
Tatar People, reported the Yerkramas Armenian newspaper published in
Krasnodar, Russia.

“Even if the bill passes the Parliament, I don’t believe the President
will have enough will to sign it,” Mustafa Dzhemilev, the Crimean
Tatar leader and member of the Ukranian Parliament said.

He called the legislation an “inconsiderate and unsound step” by the
Ukrainian Parliament.

“The number of Turkic people in Ukraine is much greater than that of
Armenians. The authors of the bill should be aware of the consequences
its adoption could lead to,” Dzhemilev said, adding that Ukraine’s
relations with Azerbaijan, Turkey and other Turkic nations could be
jeopardized in the event of the bill’s passage.

Dzhemilev was quoted by Polemika.com.ua news agency as saying that
he will talk to Arsen Avakov, one of the co-authors of the bill,
who is a member of his own Batkivshchyna Party.

“I will tell him that this step is unacceptable. If the faction
supports the decision, I will withdraw from it. At the same time,
we’ll tell other parliament members that the measure would be a blow
to Ukraine’s foreign policy,” he said.

Dzhemilev also warned of wide-spread protests by Turkic people
in Ukraine.

The bill on the Armenian Genocide of 1915-1922 perpetrated at the
hands of the Ottoman Empire was introduced in the Ukrainian Supreme
Rada. The document has been authored by member of the Batkivshchyna
Party Arsen Avakov, members of the Party of Regions Vilen Shatvoryan
and Never Mkhitaryan.

Armenia Must Develop Small Aircraft – Public Council Member

ARMENIA MUST DEVELOP SMALL AIRCRAFT – PUBLIC COUNCIL MEMBER

June 18, 2013 | 12:30

YEREVAN. – Armenia must develop small aircraft, member of the Public
Council Levon Ghazaryan said.

He is convinced the development of small aircraft, the so-called
“air taxi”, will help lower the price of tickets, and it will be
convenient to passengers.

For example, Kazarian said if a passenger wants to get from Sochi to
Armenian town of Stepanavan, then flying through Yerevan will create
additional problems. Consequently, for the development of small
aircraft we need to renovate the existing airports and build new ones.

However, member of the Public Council warned against the side effect.

This may lead to higher prices at the Zvartnots airport, as airport
will try to compensate the reducing number of passengers with raising
prices

13:22 18/06/2013 ” SOCIETY

It is very important that the air communication field is being
liberalized, and 3 national air carriers are going to be introduced,

in a decrease in ticket prices, according to him.

Air Armenia and Armenian International Airways are likely to become

in operating flights.

First, the Civil Aviation Department will announce a tender to
choose national carriers. After they are approved, they will need

Ghazaryan said.

The speaker added that in his opinion some measures should have been

Chancellor Merkel Condemns Turkey That "Has Entered 21st Century"

CHANCELLOR MERKEL CONDEMNS TURKEY THAT “HAS ENTERED 21ST CENTURY”

Mon, 06/17/2013 – 17:39
International news

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said today that she was shocked over
the rude response of the Turkish Government to the anti-government
protests.

“I’m shocked, like most people. I’d be like the ones who stand with
criticism, who have a different opinion and ideas about society, have
a place in Turkey, which has entered the 21st century,” she said in
German “RTL” television-radio interview.

To the question whether Turkish response corresponds to the response of
the state that plans to join the EU, she replied. “What is happening
in Turkey, does not correspond to our ideas of free assembly and free
speech,” “interfax” reports

Note that large demonstrations and clashes with the police began more
than two weeks ago, on May 31. The participants of the mass protests
are against the construction of shopping and entertainment center in
Gezi Park.

This movement is gradually joined by new groups of demonstrators
dissatisfied with the Turkish government.

Turkish wave of protests covered many cities and the participants
claim that Erdogan and his government are turning to authoritarian
regimes and impose conservative Islamic values of secular society.

Johnson: Syrian Opposition Weapons Would Be Pressing Weapons Into Ma

JOHNSON: SYRIAN OPPOSITION WEAPONS WOULD BE PRESSING WEAPONS INTO MANIACS & AL-QAEDA THUGS

Jun 17, 2013

London, SANA _ Arming the Syrian rebels would be “pressing weapons
into the hands of maniacs and al-Qaeda thugs,” London’s mayor, Boris
Johnson, has said, warning British Premier David Cameron of the risks
of arming the Syrian opposition fighters.

Writing for British publication “The Telegraph”, Johnson said that
the UK must not use Syria as an arena for muscle flexing.

“We can’t use Syria as an arena for geopolitical point-scoring or
muscle-flexing, and we won’t get a ceasefire by pressing weapons into
the hands of maniacs,” Johnson added.

He joins a number of prominent British political and social figures
in an attempt to dissuade Prime Minister David Cameron from sending
arms to the Syrian opposition.

“This is the moment for a total ceasefire, an end to the madness,”
Johnson said, adding: “It is time for the US, Russia, the EU, Turkey,
Iran, Saudi and all the players to convene an intergovernmental
conference to try to halt what is happening in Syria.”

Johnson’s comments came after many statements made by high-ranking
officials who are opposing arming the opposition and Cameron’s stand
by U.S. President Barack Obama in providing more aid to the opposition.

Deputy PM, Nick Clegg, also warned Cameron of the dangers of supplying
the Syrian opposition with weapons. Former Commander of the British
Army, Lord Dannatt, said he feared any such assistance would lead
Britain into further intervention, while the Archbishop of York,
John Sentamu, urged Cameron to “tread very warily”.

The statements of Johnson, Clegg, Dannatt and others agree with
the remarks made yesterday by Russian President, Vladimir Putin,
in which he called on G8 summit to act on Syria without violating
the international rules.

Putin wondered how to support the people who not only kill others,
but open up their bodies and eat their intestines, in a reference
to a video footage on the internet of a armed terrorist apparently
eating the heart of a government soldier.

Russia believes the crisis in Syria will only be brought to an end
through negotiations.
