ARMENIA’S DEFENCE MINISTRY: THE INFORMATION IN AZERBAIJANI MASS MEDIA ABOUT MURDER OF THE THREE ARMENIAN SERVICEMEN IS “OUT OF THIN AIR”
by Ashot Safaryan

ARMINFO
Thursday, August 15, 14:01

The information in Azerbaijani mass media about murder of the three
Armenian servicemen and wounding of a battalion chief is “out of
thin air”, press-secretary of Armenia’s Defence Ministry, Artsrun
Hovannisyan, told Arminfo correspondent.

An officer of Armenian was shot by Azerbaijani servicemen in the
shooting in Berd-Gazakh territory of the frontline on August 6,
1news.az reported referring to its “military sources”. On August
6, at 00.50, as a result of the shooting between Azerbaijani and
Armenian servicemen, battalion commander of Armenian army, Major
Avelyan Armen Saroyevich was seriously wounded. Regiment commander,
Colonel Harut Minasyan, who was responsible for the protection of the
abovementioned territory was also with him. He managed to run away
during the shooting. But the battalion commander Avelyan was taken from
the danger zone with serious wounds. He was first taken to military
hospital in Berd region, then to the Central Military Hospital in
Yerevan. In general, from August 2 till August 8, 3 Armenian servicemen
were killed by Azerbaijani snipers on the frontline.

For his part, a representative of the Armenian Defence Ministry thinks
such an information is funny. He drew attention at an interesting
detail – the Azerbaijani party was so much hot for the sensation
invented by it, that it willingly confessed making aggression against
the Republic of Armenia, breaking cease-fire regime and attempted
murder.

Hovannisyan added that servicemen with the names mentioned in the
information do not serve at the sector named in the information. This
is evidence of its falsehood. “Similar publications are peculiar
to the yellow press, but not to the one that respects itself”, –
press-secretary of Armenia’s Defence Ministry said. He also added that
an Armenian officer will never leave his friend at the battle field,
as such a behavior is not peculiar to his image. “It is impossible
to find out such cases even with a help of a microscope”, he said.

Why Is Catholicos Silent?

WHY IS CATHOLICOS SILENT?

Two years ago an Azerbaijani commando, according to the official
press release, penetrated into the Armenian positions and fired at
the sleeping soldiers. Four died, four were injured. The commando was
rendered harmless, and his body, as the Karabakh authorities said,
was lying in the neutral area for a long time.

Azerbaijan did everything to return the body of the commando Ibrahimov
and make him a hero, a shaheed. The Karabakh side did not want to
return the body because they understanding that he would be the next
idol of the Azerbaijani militarism.

However, the religious channel was used, and the leader of Muslims
asked the Center, the Russian Patriarch, for help who asked the
Armenian catholicos to plead for return of the commando’s body. The
Catholicos did not turn him down, and Karabakh did not argue with
the catholicos and returned Mubariz.

Now that Hakob Injighukyan, Armenian soldier, has been captured by
the Azerbaijanis, the Armenian catholicos and the Russian patriarch
are silent. There was hope that during the visit to Baku Putin would
ask Aliyev to display good will but apparently Putin was too busy.

It is frightening even to think what the Armenian soldier is going
through in captivity. The ministry of defense is undertaking some
steps but the Armenian church is silent. Perhaps he is too busy
because the Armenian Apostolic Church is inevitably moving towards
reforms which may change a lot in the church.

However, Catholicos Garegin II should find a free minute to think
about the destiny of the captured soldier.

La Population Active En Diminution En Armenie

LA POPULATION ACTIVE EN DIMINUTION EN ARMENIE

ARMENIE

a declare Makaryan.

Why John Kerry Should Be Treated As A Thief

WHY JOHN KERRY SHOULD BE TREATED AS A THIEF

Kerry isn’t on the Palestinian side. He’s going all out for ‘peace’ on
Israeli government terms

By Robert Fisk

August 14, 2013 “Information Clearing House – “The Independent” –
Has John Kerry no shame? First he cuddles up to both Palestinians
and Israelis and announces the renewal of a “peace process” which
the Palestinians don’t trust and the Israelis don’t want. Then Israel
announces that it will build 1,200 new homes for Jews – and Jews only –
on occupied Palestinian land. And now Kerry tells the Palestinians –
the weak and occupied Palestinians – that they are running out of
time if they want a state of their own.

Any other “statesman” involved in any other dispute who told an
occupied people that if they didn’t make peace their occupiers would
steal even more of their land, would be regarded as an outcast, a
fellow thief, a potential criminal. But no. John Kerry announces that
illegal Jewish colonies – or “settlements” as he likes to call them,
along with the world’s Israel-compliant press – are “illegitimate”. I
think he meant internationally “illegal”. But it doesn’t matter. In
the first 10 years of the Oslo “process”, the number of Israelis
living on stolen Palestinian land doubled to 400,000. No wonder Kerry
muttered that Israel’s latest theft announcement was “to some degree
[sic] expected”.

You bet it was. Israel has been running rings around cowardly
US administrations for decades, ignoring Washington’s squirming
embarrassment every time it went for another land grab on someone
else’s property. The Oslo accords, remember, envisioned a five-year
period in which Israelis and Palestinians would refrain from taking
“any unilateral steps that would prejudice the outcome of the
negotiations”. Israel simply ignored this. As it still does. And
what does Kerry advise the Palestinians? That they should not “react
adversely”!

This is preposterous. Kerry must know – as the UN and the EU know –
that there is not the slightest chance of “Palestine” existing as a
state because the Israelis have already stolen too much land on the
West Bank. Anyone who drives around the occupied territories realises
at once (unless they are politically blind) that there is as much
chance of building a state in the West Bank – whose map of colonies
and non-colonised districts looks like the smashed windscreen of a
car – as there is waiting for the return of the Ottoman Empire.

And Kerry? He’s a man whose every statement must be colonised by
the word “sic”. Take this, for example. “We have known [sic] that
there was going to be a continuation of some [sic] building [sic] in
certain [sic] places, and I think the Palestinians understand that.” I
suppose there should be a “sic” after “understand” as well. And then
Kerry tells us that “what this” – he’s talking about the land theft –
“underscores, actually [sic again], is the importance of getting to
the table … quickly”. In other words, do what you’re told now –
or we’ll let the Israelis snatch even more of your property. In the
real world, this is called blackmail.

Then came the ultimate lie: that the “question of settlements” is
“best resolved by solving the problem of security and borders”. Tosh.

The colonies – or settlements, as Kerry goes on calling these acts
of robbery – are not being taken by Israel because of “security” or
“borders” but because the Israeli Right, which continues to dominate
the Netanyahu administration, wants the land for itself. Many Israelis
don’t. Many Israelis see the vileness of this land theft and condemn
it. They deserve the peace and security which the world wishes them.

But they won’t get it with colonisation, and they know it.

And Kerry isn’t on their side. He’s going all out for “peace” on
Israeli government terms, and the Palestinians – “cabined, cribbed,
confined” – have got to shut up and take what they can get. And they
will be given a few small morsels. Twenty-six elderly prisoners will
be handed over today. Crumbs for Mahmoud Abbas and his merry men. But
more colonies for Israel, a country which hasn’t even told John Kerry –
or us – where its eastern border is. On the old 1967 “green line”?

Along the colony “line” east of Jerusalem? Or the Jordan river? But
for Kerry, it’s “hurry, hurry, hurry”. Book your seats now, or it
will be a full house. What price “Palestine”?

Sports: Ban For Wrestler Accused Of Racism Delayed Until After World

BAN FOR WRESTLER ACCUSED OF RACISM DELAYED UNTIL AFTER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Insidethegames.biz
Aug 14 2013

Wednesday, 14 August 2013
By Nick Butler

August 14 – The International Federation of Associated Wrestling Styles
(FILA) has postponed the ban issued against Rıza Kayaalp, the Turkish
wrestler accused of making racist comments on Twitter, until after
next month’s World Championships pending a review into the decision.

FILA issued Kayaalp with a six-month ban last week after comments were
posted to the wrestler’s Twitter account which strongly criticised
Armenians and Greeks and blamed them for the anti-Government protests
which broke out in Turkey earlier this year.

However, after the Turkish Wrestling Federation (TGF) appealed the
decision, FILA ruled to postpone the case, leaving Kayaalp free to
compete at September’s FILA World Championships in Budapest.

The announcement also comes a day after TGF chairman Hamza Yerlikaya
defended Kayaalp and vowed to take the “unlawful” ban to the Court
of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) if the appeal was unsuccessful.

Kayaalp, 23, competes in the Greco-Roman heavyweight division and,
after winning the 2011 world title, won a bronze medal at last summer’s
London Olympic Games.

In June, a Twitter account named @rizakayaalpriza, and believed to
belong to the wrestler, launched a string of tweets which consisted
of messages such as: “these are the Armenian and Greek dogs,” and
“you just leave the streets to Armenians, you f**ing looters” and
“F**k you traitors”.

These tweets were hastily deleted following the strong reaction to
the comments.

However, Yerlikaya hinted that the TGF would argue that the
controversial tweets had not been written by Kayaalp.

“They are not a racist statement by our kid,” Yerlikaya insisted.

“There are some tweets posted by second or third persons so that is
not certain, either.”

Alexander Rahr: "Russia Moves Toward A Pragmatic Cooperation With Az

ALEXANDER RAHR: “RUSSIA MOVES TOWARD A PRAGMATIC COOPERATION WITH AZERBAIJAN”

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
Aug 14 2013

14 August 2013 – 3:35pm

Interviewed by Orkhan Sattarov, head of the European office of VK

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to Azerbaijan has caused a lot
of judgements about the new trends of Russian policy in the Caucasus,
which will be continued in specific agreements signed in Baku. The
two neighbouring and friendly countries reaffirmed their policy of
strategic partnership, providing for compulsory coordination of the
interests of each other, including those on external sites.

Independent expert and scientific director of the German-Russian
Forum Alexander Rahr told VK about the contours of the new Russian
policy in the region.

– Alexander Glebovich, how would you rate the prospects of
Azerbaijani-Russian energy cooperation in the context of the energy
security of Europe? In particular, in the media there are rumours about
the possibility of acquiring shares in the TAP and TANAP projects by
“Rosneft”…

– First of all, I think “Rosneft” is very difficult to stop. This is
a company that is growing rapidly in Russia, it is now strategically
aimed at gaining its share, not just a niche, but its large share in
the large gas business. Not only in Russia, but also outside Russia,
so it is logical that such a company which has, incidentally, the
closest strategic forms of cooperation with Exxon, with BP, will
now seek to obtain for itself the strategic direction of actions in
the gas sector. The support from the government for “Rosneft”, in
my opinion, is very large, and in the coming years the company will
determine the direction vector of the entire Russian energy policy.

It seems to me that if “Rosneft” will really unite with SOCAR
(State Oil Company of Azerbaijan – VK) in one direction or another,
in the construction of pipes or, perhaps, as a share of pumping gas –
I do not rule out that “Rosneft” itself is interested in starting gas
production in the northern part of the Caspian Sea – it will lead to
a truly large-scale strategic cooperation.

Russia has always tried to cooperate in such a way. However, something
has changed. In previous years, we can say in the last 20 years,
Russia tried to prevent the break-up of its transport monopoly.

“Gazprom” tried to deny it and not to let the post-Soviet states float
freely, that is, not to give them the opportunity to build or engage in
alternative transit and transportation routes bypassing Russia. But
in this great game Russia could not support its policies. And it
had to accept the fact that both Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, which
previously could be somehow constrained in this respect, too, had
their pipes to China, and now there is a very serious competition
to Russia. Azerbaijan is also beginning to be serious competitor
for Russia, of course, and especially for the “South Stream” in the
European markets. And so I think this is the proper development.

If not “Gazprom” with its own plans, so “Rosneft” will search some
common ground with its rivals and try to get into this business. I
think if that happens, we will have less geopolitics and more economic
cooperation, more economic benefits. Russia will no longer have to
think geopolitically, to let or not to let someone, to prohibit someone
to build a bypass pipe and collaborate with someone there. And here,
in principle, Russia is engaged in a project that already exists and
is being implemented without it in order to provide capital and earn
money. I think it’s a smart move, if it takes place.

– What expectations do you link with the visit of Vladimir Putin
to Azerbaijan, given that some time ago many experts were talking
about a pause and even a certain cooling in relations between the
two countries?

– I would not say that Russia’s relations with Azerbaijan were heavily
damaged. There is one problem. I think it does not lie in the gas
field. Azerbaijan has its own ally – the strong regional power of
Turkey, it has his own ties with Israel and the United States –
Russian diplomats, I think, understand this quite well. A problem
that has always existed somewhere is the alliance between Russia and
Armenia. But I, on the other hand, do not think that in these allied
relations, in military alliance relations with Armenia, Russia will
automatically act against the interests of Azerbaijan. I have not
noticed it.

Russia has always sought to maintain good business relations with
Azerbaijan. And it seems to me that what happened over the last few
months and weeks, namely Azerbaijan’s rejection from building the
“Nabucco” pipeline mostly with Turkey and the decision to build TAP,
is the best of all, of course, not perfect, but the best option
for Russia. If the EU’s presence and then, maybe, Americans had been
dominant in the Caucasus through, say, such a large western pipeline as
“Nabucco”, Russia would be disturbed. Now Azerbaijan and Turkey are
in fact regional powers and countries which already depend on these
resources, and by geographical location, Turkey is a transit corridor
to Europe. Russia can accept the fact that they are building and will
control the flow of gas through alternative routes bypassing Russia
to Europe.

I think that Putin’s visit in this regard will be aimed at making an
agreement on the joint forms of work, and the inclusion of “Rosneft”
in this new consortium is the evidence of Russia’s intentions here
to disconnect from purely geo-political attitudes and move towards
a very pragmatic cooperation.

– You spoke about Armenian-Russian cooperation. In this context, the
question arises about the initialling by Armenia of the Association
Agreement with the EU and at the same time the prospect of Armenia’s
accession to the Customs Union. What do you think, are these two
perspectives compatible with each other, and what is your outlook on
future developments?

– I have talked about the fact that, as for the Caucasus and
Azerbaijan, Russia wants to reduce the proportion of geopolitics,
to return to a more pragmatic economic cooperation. You touched on
the issue of clear geopolitics. It seems to me that the associate
status, which is now proposed, by the way, to Ukraine, and Moldova,
and Armenia by the EU, also shows the geopolitical thinking of the
EU, which fears that Russia, which has become stronger in the last 12
years of Putin’s rule, ventured to restore something similar to the
Russian Empire. This was said by Mrs. Clinton and other politicians in
the West. This process causes the most concern in the entire security
policy in Europe. Therefore, the West will continue to offer associate
status, including to Armenia.

But there are some catches here. First, it seems to me that since
there are themes of geopolitics, they can be negotiated. Armenia and
Ukraine may agree to have associate status with the West and the East.

The association with the EU, for them, of course, is beneficial,
because through the European Union both Armenia and Ukraine will come
to the rule of law in Europe and the legal order. This is a defense
against corruption, more pure competition, strengthening the legal
system and, therefore, for these countries it is very profitable,
especially for the businesses in these countries, to protect their
activities, their accumulated capital, by strengthening the legal
system.

On the other hand, it is also a fact that the Armenian and Ukrainian
products in most cases are not competitive in the European markets,
and both countries need, of course, the Russian market. The CIS is
almost non-existent, but the Eurasian Union will exist. And there’s a
very big opportunity for these products, they’re more competitive. So
closing the way for their business, for example, Armenian business,
to the Russian market is also impossible. Because you need to find
a way to become associated both there and here.

I think that it is theoretically possible if both there and here,
that is, in the EU and in the Eurasian Union there will be very clear
and very strict rules of the WTO, it would be the rule of law, and the
norms in the Eurasian Union will be more and more like European ones.

This is a complex economic and legal work to be done, and this requires
political will. I think this is the perfect way to go. I think that,
in the end, we will go down this path. Therefore the output for
Armenia now is just to play smartly, soberly and pragmatically for
itself and to get this status in the East and the West.

But Armenia and Ukraine have some problems in obtaining the status of
the West. As we all know, in Ukraine there is Tymoshenko, who is in
prison. The West is dissatisfied with very fact that the head of the
opposition is in prison, and therefore to the Ukraine, there is more
distrust, and it is even unknown whether there will be an agreement.

In the case of Armenia, it seems to me that no associated status will
be signed unless Armenia agrees to open the border with Turkey or
in any case, goes to the liberalization of trade and the border with
Turkey. And as we know, Armenia has its own ideology here, its own very
serious matter, the issue of genocide, and the requirements of some
repentance on the part of Turkey that Turkey, of course, will not make.

These are still significant problems, significant barriers that
constantly impede this process and create a situation where we have
always been in one status quo, for two decades, with no significant
changes.
