NALBANDYAN: ARMENIA TO START NEGOTIATING OVER ITS INTENTION TO JOIN CUSTOMS UNION

YEREVAN, September 11. /ARKA/. Negotiations over Armenian authorities’
decision to join the Customs Union to be launched in late October
or early November, Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan said
Wednesday at a Q&A session in the National Assembly, Novosti-Armenia
reports.

“The negotiations may start only after all three Customs Union member
countries agree to accept Armenia,” he said adding that such a summit
is scheduled for late October.

After the negotiations a package of documents will be sent to the
Parliament for ratification.

The minister stressed again that Armenian authorities made no secret of
the idea of joining the Customs Union – they have repeatedly expressed
their stance on the matter, and a group has been set up for discussing
ways of cooperation with the union.

“Taking into account future developments and opinions of experts
and political analysts, we have come to conclusion that Armenia’s
membership in the Customs Union is possible and that it is possible
to overcome obstacles,” he said.

Armenian and Russian presidents, Serzh Sargsyan and Vladimir Putin,
made a joint statement one week ago after they met in Moscow. It has
become known from the statement that Armenia has decided to join the
Customs Union and it intends to take part in formation of Eurasian
Economic Union in the future.

The announcement came as Armenia was poised to sign the Association

doit etre prete a heberger les Armeniens de Syrie qui seraient obliges
de quitter le pays dans un proche avenir.

C’est lors d’une rencontre avec les etudiants du Haut-Karabakh que le
chef du gouvernement armenien a annonce s’attendre a une emigration
en masse de la population armenienne de Syrie.

L’Armenie se prepare tout particulièrement a accueillir un grand nombre
de refugies armeniens de Syrie en cas d’attaques franco-americaines
sur la Syrie [Nota CVAN : l’information a ete diffusee avant la
proposition russe de mettre l’arsenal chimique syrien sous surveillance
internationale. La menace de frappes militaires occidentales n’est
pas ecartee pour autant. Elle serait sur ” Pause ” comme l’a indique
Barack Obama].

Ces 2 dernières annees, plus de 10.000 Armeniens de Syrie se sont
installes en Armenie, rapporte le service armenien de l’immigration.

Avant la guerre civile, plus de 80 000 Armeniens vivaient en Syrie,
dont la plupart a Alep, plus grande ville du pays, devenue l’un des
points chauds du conflit.

Les dirigeants du Haut-Karabakh ont annonce a maintes reprises que
leur republique etait disposee a accueillir de nouveaux Armeniens de
Syrie. Des centaines d’Armeniens de Syrie ont deja trouve refuge dans
le territoire du Haut-Karabakh, au grand dam de l’Azerbaïdjan voisin.

Le gouvernement armenien a pris les mesures administratives necessaires
pour faciliter le processus d’immigration, mais il s’est toujours garde
d’inciter la communaute armenienne de Syrie a quitter le pays. Pour
la plupart, les Armeniens de Syrie sont des descendants des victimes
du genocide perpetre en 1915 par la Turquie. La destination finale
des deportes des convois de la mort etait en effet le desert syrien
de Der-es-Zor (” l’Auschwitz ” des Armeniens), où l’armee ottomane
les avait parques dans des camps insalubres.

La communaute armenienne de Syrie, regroupee essentiellement a Alep,
est – ou du moins etait, jusqu’au debut de la guerre civile – l’une
des dernières gardiennes du ” temple ” au Moyen-Orient, conservant des
ecoles, des eglises, des institutions, des associations. Sa disparition
(ou son affaiblissement) est une catastrophe qui ne peut que rejouir
la Turquie, partie prenante dans l’aide aux ” rebelles “.

L’Armenie n’a elabore aucun plan d’urgence d’evacuation des familles
armeniennes du territoire syrien.

Cependant, le 28 août, Nikolay Grigorian a annonce que le Service de
Secours Armenien engagera l’evacuation des Armeniens de Syrie en cas
de decision gouvernementale.

Lors d’un sondage telephonique mene la semaine passee, de nombreux
Armeniens residant encore a Alep ont rapporte que la fuite de la
ville est desormais très difficile, voire impossible, a cause du
blocage des routes par les differents acteurs du conflit. De plus,
les vols reguliers entre Damas et Erevan ont ete interrompus au
debut de l’annee, lors de l’intensification des combats a Alep et
dans ses alentours.

Des milliers d’Armeniens ont par ailleurs trouve refuge au Liban où
ils vivent dans des conditions eprouvantes.

Les reportages televisuels diffuses a la television francaise
montrent systematiquement les camps de refugies sunnites en Turquie
ou en Jordanie, mais n’informent pas des difficultes rencontres par
les Syriens chretiens qui choisissent l’exode vers de petits pays,
tels le Liban ou l’Armenie.

MASS CELEBRATED AT ARMENIAN SOURP GIRAGOS CHURCH IN DIYARBAKIR

Hundreds attended a church service held on Tues., Sept. 10, at the
Sourp Giragos Armenian Church in Diyarbakir, the Armenian Weekly
reports.

Two days earlier, on Sun., Sept. 8, a church service was held at
the Sourp Khatch Church on Aghtamar Island in Van, during which five
Armenians were baptized.

The head of the Sourp Giragos Church Foundation, Vartkes Ergun Ayık,
told the Armenian Weekly that the two services were held two days
apart to maximize attendance.

Acting Patriarch Aram Ateshyan conducted the church services, as
Sourp Giragos does not yet have a priest.

The church service was also attended by Mayors Osman Baydemir
and Abdullah Demirbas, the heads of the Diyarbakir Metropolitan
Municipality and the Sour Municipality, respectively.”Unfortunately,
there is no institution for training clergy in Turkey, which is why
two years ago an Armenian from Adiyaman [in Turkey] was sent to study
abroad. Upon the completion of his education, he will be assigned as
permanent pastor at Sourp Giragos,” Ayık told the Weekly.

“The Armenian people was burnt into ashes in 1915. Today, the Armenians
are rising from the ashes in these lands,” Demirbas told the Weekly.

Sourp Giragos was restored and opened for worship in 2011 through
the efforts of a handful of Armenian supporters and the Diyarbakir
municipal authorities.

REVEALED THAT A NUMBER OF AZERBAIJANIS WERE ACCIDENTALLY INCLUDED IN LIST OF KARABAKH WAR MARTYRS

The State Service: “Facts prove that in Karabakh war, the Azerbaijani
Armed Forces suffered fewer losses than previously stated”

Baku. Rashad Suleymanov – APA. The process to redevelop the list of
Azerbaijanis, who were killed in Karabakh war and combat operations,
is expected to be completed by the end of the year, military sources
told APA.

The State Service for Mobilization and Conscription is specifying
the places in this regard and redeveloping the list. The persons,
who were killed on front shootings during the ceasefire, are also
being included in the list.

The examinations conducted by the State Service for Mobilization
and Conscription found out that a number of people were accidentally
included in the list of martyrs. There are some facts that in many
cases, servicemen, who were killed in armed conflicts beyond the
frontline in 1991-1994 and during road accidents, and civilians,
who didn’t participate in military operations, have been included in
the list of martyrs.

The State Service notes the facts revealed after the specifications
prove that in the Armenia-Armenia conflict, the Azerbaijani Armed
Forces suffered fewer losses than previously stated.

The final list will be posted on the website of the State Service
for Mobilization and Conscription.

ARMENIA’S ARAS OZBILIZ TAKES HILARIOUSLY BAD CORNER KICK DURING LOSS TO DENMARK

There was a lot riding on Denmark’s World Cup Qualifier trip to
lowly Armenia on Tuesday night. Not only were De Rød-Hvide looking
to secure the play-off place in UEFA Group B, but they were keen to
avenge the humiliating 4-0 home loss they suffered in the reverse
fixture last June.

Manager Martin Olsen got preparations off to a controversial start,
after he was forced to apologize for comparing the aforementioned
loss to the tragedies of 9/11. On reflection, he conceded that it
wasn’t an incredibly sensitive thing to say the day before the 12th
anniversary of the attacks.

Gauche comments aside, the Danes were able to secure a vital 1-0 win in
Yerevan. This win came in part because of Daniel Agger’s 73rd-minute
goal, but also in part because of the corner-taking prowess of
Spartak Moscow’s Aras Ozbiliz. The poor fellow appears to kick the
flag instead of the ball and it all goes horribly wrong from there.

Ozbiliz’s woeful dead ball attempt should have ended in a free kick
to the Danes for handball, but the officials must have either felt
sympathy or that the flag had committed a foul, as he was awarded a
do-over instead.

OLSEN COMPARES ARMENIAN LOSS TO 9/11

National football coach later apologised for his comparison of a 0-4
drubbing by Armenia on June 11 to terrorist attack

Almost 12 years ago to the day, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives
in the 9/11 terrorist attack in New York City. For national football
coach Morten Olsen, losing a football game is apparently on par with
that tragic event.

As Denmark prepares for its showdown World Cup qualifier against
Armenia tonight in Yerevan, Olsen raised some eyebrows after he
compared Denmark’s 0-4 humiliation at home to the Armenians in June
to 9/11.

Olsen explained at a press meeting yesterday that the unexpected loss
in Copenhagen still weighs heavily on him and his team.

“For us Danes I think that if you are in or around the team, this
game in June is a blemish that needs to be washed away,” Olsen said.

“Perhaps it’s a bit rough to compare, but in terms of football,
it was our September 11.”

Later apologised Trine Nebel, a rhetorician and communications
consultant, argued that Olsen’s comparison was extremely inappropriate.

“Football is a game. I know that it’s also about money and for some
people it’s a job, but it is a game and you step over moral boundaries
by comparing September 11 with football,” Nebel told Ritzau news
service. “It’s not just an emotional event for the US. As a nation,
we in Denmark have also had to deal with the effects of September 11.”

Olsen later apologised for the ill-advised comparison on the Danish
football association’s Twitter account.

“I am sorry if the comparison had the unintended consequences of
hurting some people,” Olsen said.

Loss was a severe blow Denmark’s hopes to reach the 2014 World Cup
in Brazil were dealt a severe blow in June after the team endured
their worst home defeat in recent memory.

“We played on June 11, but result-wise it feels like a stain. It’s
something that still sits in all our players, and that is just fine,
because it should,” Olsen said, hoping to avoid making the same
mistakes in tonight’s return game in the Armenian capital.

Denmark’s World Cup hopes continue to hang in the balance despite
their 2-1 win over Malta on Friday. Even if the Danes win their three
remaining fixtures against Armenia, Italy and Malta, they are not
guaranteed a play-off spot. A loss tonight in Yerevan would all but
end their chances.

The World Cup qualifier between Denmark and Armenia kicks off tonight
at 18:00 and can be seen on K6.

ARMENIA BOSS: OUR PLAYERS SHOWED METTLE

Armenian national boss Vardan Minasyan said he thanked “the guys for
showing mettle”.

One can find only positive words to speak about Armenia players,
Minasyan said after suffering 0-1 defeat from Denmark in Yerevan.

He noted that Karlen Lazarian and Arthur Sarkisov were substituted
because of injuries.

“Marcos Pizzelli was in starting lineup because we knew that the Danish
studied our first game. This time I tried to play another game, and
Mark is very good at keeping the ball. The most important thing now
is Bulgaria match,” he said.

ARMENIA’S AUTHORITIES UNABLE TO HEAR EUROPE – LEVON ZURABYAN

In an interview with Tert.am, Head of the Armenian National Congress
(ANC) parliamentary group Levon Zurabyan commented on the Armenian
authorities’ statements on their willingness to sign initial an
Association Agreement with the European Union (EU). He noted that
the authorities seem to be unable to hear Europe stating that the
document is “off table.”

With respect to the possibility of Armenia initialing the Association
Agreement, Zurabyan said: “They agreed that one thing is impossible
without the other. And not only the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade
Area Agreement, but also the Association Agreement are off table.

However, Eduard Sharmazanov and Edward Nalbandian, as well as those
of their ilk, keep on claiming that Armenia is ready to initial the
Association Agreement. Armenia is now willing to initial a document
that the other party has taken off the negotiating table. They are
mere attempts to calm down the public while it is quite clear to
everyone that this policy has failed. I would also like say one more
thing addressing President Serzh Sargsyan. I mean the so-called
‘initiative policy.’ Serzh Sargsyan has already undertaken two
important initiatives. The first is the so-called Armenian-Turkish
protocols, which were supposed to settle regional problems and lead
to the reopening of the Armenian-Turkish border. The second has to do
with the Association Agreement. Both the initiatives failed. Moreover,
all the plans not only failed. Rather, we reached a worse situation.

So I am calling on President Serzh Sargsyan not to undertake any
new initiatives.”

As regards the Armenian FM’s answers to his questions, Zurabyan said
that he did not understand the sense of that meeting. Nothing new was
reported. “Moreover, we did not get explanations for failures of our
diplomacy,” he added.

ARCHITECT: RESTORATION OF THE INDOOR MARKET DEPENDS ON THE WILL OF ARMENIAN GOVERNMENT

The restoration of the Yerevan indoor market depends only on the
will of the Armenian government, the head of the Armenian Union of
Architects, Mkrtich Minasyan, said at today’s press-conference.

He said that the government of Armenia is the “master” of the
indoor market. For this reason, it should deal with preserving and
restoration of the given building which is being transformed into a
supermarket. “It is obvious that the historical image of the market
has been already damaged, we have lost the indoor market. However,
it may be still restored and state functionaries have to deal with
its restoration”, – Minasyan said.

He did not rule out that after the indoor market we shall have other
architectural losses as well, as similar incidents are balled-up very
much, and as a rule, nobody is made responsible.

To recall, the Indoor Market was built in 1952 by Armenian architect
Grigory Aghababyan’s project and has been considered one of the symbols
of the Armenian capital since then. The repair inside the building
has damaged the original exterior of the building. In early June,
the municipality promised that the constructions erected inside the
building would be demolished and the original appearance would be
restored. However, these constructions have not been dismantled.
