We Should Not Pretend Nothing Happened After Armenia’s Decision To J

WE SHOULD NOT PRETEND NOTHING HAPPENED AFTER ARMENIA’S DECISION TO JOIN CUSTOMS UNION- LAWMAKER SAYS

YEREVAN, October 16. / ARKA /. The chairwoman of an Armenian
parliamentary committee on European integration Naira Zohrabyan from
the Prosperous Armenia party said one can not pretend that nothing
has happened after Armenia’s decision to join the Russia-led Customs
Union following almost four years of negations between Armenia and EU
on association agreement and the deep and comprehensive free trade area
(DCFTA).

“We should not pretend that nothing has happened. Unfortunately,
we all need to admit a very important fact – this U-turn is a major
foreign policy change for the majority of Armenian political forces, a
change that came on September 3 (when president Sargsyan announced the
decision),” she said at the opening of a conference in Yerevan titled
” Four Years of the Eastern Partnership : Results and Challenges ..

The views of Armenian policy makers and experts. ”

Zohrabyan also commented on arguments that the decision to join the
Customs Union was forced by security concerns and the unresolved
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

“We all understand that we have a security problem, but we must
also understand that our security is contingent also on corruption,
violations of human rights and democracy, which are slowly draining
our country. Maybe it’s not so visible and tangible, but we understand
that these issues are vitally important, and in this sense it is very
important to continue cooperation with the EU, ” she said.

“For me, as a citizen of Armenia, Armenia’s place is in the European
family of nations. I do not see any other path,” she added.

The conference has been organized by the Embassy of the Czech Republic
in Armenia and the Analytical Centre on Globalization and Regional
Cooperation. .-0-

Goods Imported From Turkey To Armenia Subjected To Lab Examination:

GOODS IMPORTED FROM TURKEY TO ARMENIA SUBJECTED TO LAB EXAMINATION: EXPERT

YEREVAN , October 16. / ARKA /. Chief of Armenia’s State Food Safety
Service, Abram Bakhchagulyan, told a news conference today that all
goods imported from Turkey to Armenia are subjected to lab examination.

Recently several Armenian public organizations argued that Turkish
goods, mainly vegetables and cereals, imported to Armenia are of
unknown origin and therefore pose a threat to public health.

Bakhchagulyan said that now all border checkpoints in Armenia have
installed a new control system that prevents import of goods to Armenia
without accompanying documents, while earlier a lab examination report
was enough to allow them into the country.

He noted that agricultural products imported to Armenia not only from
Turkey but also from other countries are subject to strict customs
controls on the content of nitrates. He added that the products of
plant origin are the products with the lowest risk.

According to the National Statistical Service, the trade between
Armenia and Turkey in January- August 2013 dropped by 0.5 percent
year-on-year to $125.9 million. -0-

ARMENIAN FOOTBALL SQUAD MAY CLIMB TO A RECORD POSITION IN FIFA RANKING LIST

16:49, 16 October, 2013

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 16, ARMENPRESS. The Armenian national football
squad may climb to a record position in the FIFA ranking list and
thus occupy the 38th place.

As reports “Armenpress”, after the World Cup qualifiers the Armenian
national football squad may improve its positions in the FIFA ranking
list. Vardan Minasyan’s team can appear in the 38th position with
687 points and be ahead of the whole national football teams of the
Post-Soviet Union republics, except Russia and Ukraine.

Currently, the Armenian national football squad has only 592 and
occupies the 55th position of the FIFA ranking list.

The Armenian national football squad played draw with Italy with the
final score 2 – 2 on October 15. The final match in the World Cup
qualifiers Group B kicked off at Stadio San Paolo in Naples, Italy.

Armenia scored the first goal in the fifth minute mark. Armenian
striker Yura Movsisyan (Spartak Moscow) got on the end of a ball from
Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who stole it from a poor back pass from Alberto
Aquilani. Defender Davide Astori tried to slide in to make the save,
but Yura easily went around him to put the ball in the bottom corner
from about 12 yards out.

Later Italy’s Alessandro Florenzi scored an equalizer.

Armenia regained the lead in the second half. Henrikh Mkhitaryan
(Borussia Dortmund) scored Armenia’s second goal. Mkhitaryan headed
Gevorg Ghazaryan’s left wing corner in off the crossbar and suddenly
Italy’s record of never having lost a home World Cup qualifier was
under threat.

Notwithstanding, the lead didn’t last very long. Just six minutes
later, the scoreline was squared once again. Andrea Pirlo sent forward
the ball from midfield, perfectly placed for Balotelli. Super Mario
hooked the ball in.

In Group B, Italy has already booked its spot at Brazil 2014, with
22 points, Denmark has 16 points, Czech Republic – 15, Bulgaria –
13, Armenia – 13 and Malta – 3.

"Ozbiliz" Surname Tells Story Of Armenian Genocide Survivor

“OZBILIZ” SURNAME TELLS STORY OF ARMENIAN GENOCIDE SURVIVOR

14:17, 16 October, 2013

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 16, ARMENPRESS. The surname of the midfielder
of the Armenian National Football Team and FC Spartak Moscow Aras
Ozbiliz has an interesting and deep story. As reports “Armenpress”
citing Yerkir.am website, lecturer at the Armenian State Institute of
Physical Culture Araks Marutyan shared her discoveries regarding the
Armenian footballer’s surname. She had a meeting with Aras Ozbiliz and
his family members, who arrived in Armenia to watch Armenia-Bulgaria
football match.

Among other things the Armenian State Institute of Physical Culture
Araks Marutyan underscored: “I was lucky to meet the Ozbiliz family. I
had very interesting feelings. To see the man in the stadium and then
see him surrounded with his family members are two quite different
things. “Ozbiliz” means one, who preserves his identity. Aras’
great grandfather, who managed to survive the massacres, had to
live a basement. He used to stand in front of the mirror and speak
Armenian, in order not to forget the Armenian language. In future,
he had no documents, and he proved that he is an Armenian only due to
the language. That’s why he took surname “Ozbiliz” (one, who preserves
his identity).”

Aras Ozbiliz is an Armenian football player who currently plays
right-winger for the Armenian national team and for Russian Premier
League club Spartak Moscow.

Aras was born on 9 March 1990 in the Bakırköy district of Istanbul,
Turkey toArmenian parents. He was named after the Aras River, a body
of water in Armenia. His ancestors adopted the surname “Ozbiliz”.

Their family name was once Zbilizyan. In the early 1990s, his family
emigrated from Turkey to the Netherlands. Five years later, he started
playing football for the youth team of HVV Hollandia. When he was
eight years old, Aras joined the youth team of Ajax.

Aras Ozbiliz is a product of the Ajax youth academy. Prior to moving
to Ajax as a youth, he played for HVV Hollandia in his home town of
Hoorn where he grew up. At the age of 8, he participated in tryouts
for the Amsterdam side, and was chosen to play for Ajax, having
represented Ajax on every stage of the youth academy, before making
his debut for the A selection in 2010 under then coach Martin Jol.

On 24 July 2007, in a friendly match against Argentinean club
Independiente, Aras managed to score three goals within 7 minutes,
which turned out to be a personal record.

On 24 February 2012, in a Europa League match against Manchester
United, Aras became the first Ajax player to ever score a goal against
Manchester United in a European cup match at Old Trafford.

On 4 May 2012 press-service of Kuban Krasnodar announced that they
were in talks to acquire Ozbiliz. However, only on 8 August this
transfer was officially announced. Aras was transferred for a sum of
â~B¬1 million. The contract was signed for 4 years until 2016.

On Friday, 26 July 2013 it was announced that Ozbiliz had signed a
multi-year contract with Spartak Moscow, with Kuban Krasnodar earning
â~B¬10 million on the transfer fee.

In mid-May 2010, Aras Ozbiliz was invited by the Football Federation
of Armenia to take part in the formation of the youth national team
of Armenia.

In early October 2011, Aras was called to play the match against
Armenia and Macedonia, which was held on 7 October. On 4 October 2011,
on order of the President Serzh Sargsyan, Aras Ozbilis received
Armenian citizenship and became a player of theArmenia national
football team. Ozbiliz was given from the President of the Football
Federation of Armenia Ruben Hayrapetyan an Armenia team T-shirt with
the number 23.

On 29 February 2012, Aras debuted for the national team of Armenia
during a friendly match with Canada and scored a goal in that same
match.

Armenian Genocide Recognition Indispensable Precondition For Turkey

ARMENIAN GENOCIDE RECOGNITION INDISPENSABLE PRECONDITION FOR TURKEY TO JOIN EU: MEP

17:14, 16 October, 2013

YEREVAN, OCTOBER 16, ARMENPRESS. The recognition of the Armenian
Genocide is an indispensable precondition for Turkey to join the
EU. As reports “Armenpress” citing kibrispostasi.com, Greek MEP,
the Head of the EU-Armenia Friendship Group Eleni Theocharous stated
this. “Turkey has nothing to do in the EU and civilized world, as
far as it denies the Armenian Genocide,” Eleni Theocharous noted in
the European Parliament. In addition she underscored that Armenia is
the EU’s ally in the Caucasus.

In April, 2013 the EU-Armenia Friendship Group members paid a visit
to the Republic of Armenia and the Nagorno Karabakh Republic and had
meetings with the Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic
of Armenia Hovik Abrahamyan and the Chairman of the National Assembly
of the Nagorno Karabakh Republic Ashot Ghulyan.

“Each man in this world has his homeland. But I am honored to have
two homelands – Greece and Artsakh.”

Attorney-General Urged To Open Criminal Case Against Government Offi

ATTORNEY-GENERAL URGED TO OPEN CRIMINAL CASE AGAINST GOVERNMENT OFFICIAL OVER DEATH THREAT

NEWS | 16.10.13 | 09:39

Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly Vanadzor Office head Artur Sakunts on
Tuesday addressed a letter to Armenia’s Prosecutor General Gevorg
Kostanyan, urging him to open a criminal case against a government
official who had made threats against an opposition MP through media.

In an interview with Yerkir.am last week Deputy Minister of Sports
and Youth Affairs Khachik Asryan, who is affiliated with the ruling
Republican Party of Armenia, slammed Heritage Party lawmaker Zaruhi
Postanjian over her question to President Serzh Sargsyan at the Council
of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly (PACE) session in Strasbourg on
October 2. Postanjian, in particular, accused Sargsyan of being a
gambler and “losing 70 million Euros in a European casino”.

In his remarks Asryan, notorious for his extreme nationalist rhetoric,
called for “burning Postanjyan at the stake”.

Asryan later explained that he used a figure of speech and did not
mean physical action against the lawmaker, but Postanjyan, concerned
over possible harm to her and her family members in the wake of what
she essentially took as a death threat, asked Police Chief Vladimir
Gasparyan to ensure their security. The police agreed to provide the
opposition MP with armed bodyguards but stopped short of launching
criminal proceedings against the official.

In his letter Sakunts asked the prosecutor general to open the
case against Asryan under Article 137 of the Criminal Code Armenia
(making threats to kill, inflict heavy damage to health, or to
destroy property).

Meanwhile, the Heritage Party issued a statement on Tuesday, calling
for a halt to the “persecution” of Postanjyan by the Armenian
authorities.

Earlier, Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan threatened to oust
Postanjyan from the Armenian delegation to the PACE over her
controversial question in Strasbourg.

ANKARA: Yerevan Reacts To Ankara’s Remarks On Reviving Relations

YEREVAN REACTS TO ANKARA’S REMARKS ON REVIVING RELATIONS

Hurriyet Daily news, Turkey
Oct 15 2013

ISTANBUL – Hurriyet Daily News
by Vercihan Ziflioglu

The Armenian Foreign Ministry and opposition parties have reacted
skeptically to the Turkish foreign minister’s recent remarks on
reviving the two state’s relations, saying they have “heard this old
song before.”

“Four years have passed since the initialing of the Armenian-Turkish
protocols and since then the Armenian side has constantly heard the
same old song from Ankara about some creative approaches,” Armenian
Foreign Ministry spokesman Tigran Balayan told ArmInfo news agency
on Oct. 11, referring to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s
remarks on the issue.

“All these statements are nothing other than a permanent attempt by
Ankara to veil the Turkish side’s torpedoing of the ratification and
implementation of the Armenian-Turkish protocols without preconditions,
which is expected by the international community,” Balayan added.

His statements came a day after Davutoglu said Turkey was looking for
“creative ideas” to develop relations with Armenia, adding that Ankara
gave a lot of importance to the normalization of ties.

Davutoglu also said Turkey would increase efforts on the issue in the
coming months. Two politicians from Armenia’s opposition parties also
reacted to Davutoglu’s statements. “Turkey has to take steps showing
that it is determined to follow these remarks. But it cannot, because
Baku is determining Turkey’s policies on this issue, rather than
Ankara,” David Shahnazaryan, the head of Armenian National Congress,
told the Hurriyet Daily News yesterday. “Turkey cannot take any
steps without taking permission from Baku,” Shahnazaryan also said,
adding that Turkey only aimed to “gain time” from the international
community with these remarks and would not take any concrete steps.

Ardashes Shahbazyan, a spokesperson for the opposition Armenian
Revolutionary Federation (ARF) party, also said even if Davutoglu
was sincere in his remarks, Armenia could not reach an agreement with
Ankara as long as Nagorno-Karabakh remained a precondition. “Davutoglu
knows Nagorno-Karabakh will never be the subject of negotiations,
but they [Ankara] will often repeat similar remarks, even after 2015
[the 100th anniversary of the 1915 incidents]. Their real aim is not
to revive relations,” Shahbazyan said yesterday.
