National Council of Churches urges Obama to restore stability to
Armenians of Kessab

11:56 29.03.2014

The National Council of Churches (NCC) has sent a letter to President
Barack Obama expressing concern about the plight of Christian
communities in Syria specially the depopulation of Armenian community
of Kessab, stating: “While Syrians of all religious communities are
caught up in this horrible conflict, of particular concern to us are
the Christian communities, which are often the most vulnerable,”
Massis Post reports.

“One situation that has just come to our attention is the attack on
the Armenian villages of Kessab. Though this attack comes in the wider
context of the overall Syrian conflict, it nevertheless has brought
death and destruction to the Christian communities there,” the NCC
letter reads in part. The letter specifically urged the President to
“safeguard the vulnerable Christian communities” and to “restore
stability to the Armenian communities of Kessab.”

Founded in 1950, the NCC has been a leading force for ecumenical
cooperation among Christians in the United States. The 37 NCC member
communions – from a wide spectrum of Protestant, Anglican, Orthodox,
Evangelical, historic African American and Living Peace churches –
include 45 million persons in more than 100,000 local congregations in
communities across the nation.

Following is the full text of the letter signed by James Edward
Winkler, President and General Secretary and A. Roy Medley, Chair,
National Council of Churches:

“Dear President Obama,

The National Council of Churches has been, since its inception, an
advocate for peace in the Middle East. No matter the particular
circumstances that have prompted our call for specific actions to
bring about peace over the years, our position has been very much
guided by the perspective of our church partners living in the region.

One of the most violent crises in today’s Middle East is the ongoing
conflict in Syria. While Syrians of all religious communities are
caught up in this horrible conflict, of particular concern to us are
the Christian communities, which are often the most vulnerable.

One situation that has just come to our attention is the attack on the
Armenian villages of Kessab. Though this attack comes in the wider
context of the overall Syrian conflict, it nevertheless has brought
death and destruction to the Christian communities there. Those
Christians that managed to escape the carnage are now living as
refugees.

On behalf of the National Council of Churches, we would urge you to be
vigilant in your efforts to end the Syrian conflict, and among these
efforts find a way to especially safeguard the vulnerable Christian
communities, and particularly to restore stability to the Armenian
communities of Kessab. With membership in the Council that includes
churches with roots in the Middle East, including the Armenian
community, we stand ready to assist you in these efforts in whatever
way we can.”

of the new military and industrial companies in Armenia, vice-speaker
of the parliament, Edward Sharmazanov, said at today’s session of the

He asked Deputy Defence Minister of Armenia, Ara Nazaryan, about
the current stage of the process on opening of the new 5-6 military
and industrial enterprises, which the CSTO Secretary General Nikolay

ANKARA: Turkey’s Campaign For UN Security Council Membership

TURKEY’S CAMPAIGN FOR UN SECURITY COUNCIL MEMBERSHIP

Hurriyet Daily News, Turkey
March 27 2014

If I was in the place of Spain and New Zealand; I would be rubbing my
hands with glee, especially after hearing the United Nations calling
on Turkey to stop blocking Twitter.

“We are concerned that the blocking of access to Twitter may be
incompatible with Turkey’s international human rights obligations,”
said Rupert Colville, spokesman for the U.N. High Commissioner for
Human Rights.

This call was issued to a country seeking to become a United Nations
Security Council non-permanent member for the period of 2015-2016. You
guessed it: Ankara is competing with Spain and New Zealand.

In 2008, Turkey was elected to be non-permanent member of the Security
Council for the 2009-2010 period. Turkey competed in the Western
European and others group with Austria and Iceland for two seats.

Turkey received 151 votes, from 192 members of the General Assembly,
Austria picked up 133 and Iceland won 87. Unfortunately, Turkey’s
membership to the Security Council will be remembered for being one
of only two countries, with Brazil, to have objected to additional
sanctions on Iran that took place on June 2010. But that was after
2009, the year Turkish foreign policy started going berserk.

Turkey was the shining star until 2008, earning a long deserved seat
in the Security Council. The 151 votes out of 192 showed there was not
much doubt in the international community on Turkey’s well deserved
success. While its economic performance impressed the world, Turkey
also gave the image of a reformist country. The Justice and Development
Party (AKP) succeeded in convincing the international community that
it was committed to democratization; that it would fight against all
kinds of restrictive mentalities, breaking taboos on issues such as
the untouchable nature of the military or the Armenian or Kurdish
questions. Turkey also appeared as an element of stability in its
region, with its potential to project peace under the motto of zero
problems with neighbors.

No need to say that unfortunately we are nowhere near the image the
AKP projected in 2008. When the prime minister of a country says,
“I don’t care what the international community will say,” and talks
about “wiping out” Twitter, an act that puts you in the league of
North Korea and Iran, that does not bode well for that country’s bid
for Security Council membership.

There have been an increasing amount of eyebrows being raised in Europe
about Turkey, while the AKP’s sectarian policies have tarnished the
country’s popularity in the Arab world, which will complicate efforts
to lobby Europeans and the Arabs.

And there is one other element that could strike a blow to Turkey’s
campaign in especially faraway lands. There is no doubt the Gulen
community’s network throughout the world has helped Turkey to reach
out to countries in distant lands and contributed to its success in
the last vote. As the alliance between the AKP and the Gulen community
is broken, it will be difficult to count on Gulen’s network for the
U.N. campaign.

Meanwhile, as the vote will take place this autumn, Turkey should
start intensifying its campaign. Yet following Sunday’s municipal
elections; the country is set for presidential elections and perhaps
even for snap general elections that will obviously not contribute
to Turkey’s international campaign.

When Turkey put forward its bid for 2014-2015 shortly after terminating
its term in the Security Council, I had thought it was a bad idea. I
felt it reflected a sense of hubris and greed.

As of today, we need to ask whether it will be worth spending tax
payers’ money for a race it looks hard to win, unless there is a
radical change in the AKP government’s domestic and international
policies, which does not look likely to happen.

L’univers Tres Contraste De Simon Abkarian

L’UNIVERS TRES CONTRASTE DE SIMON ABKARIAN

Le Figaro, France
27 mars 2014

Nanterre-Amandiers, Grande salle. Duree : 2h30. Jusqu’au 6 avril.

Relâche le lundi (01 46 14 70 00).

ANKARA: Davutoglu: Turkey Ready To Protect Exclave In Syria

DAVUTOGLU: TURKEY READY TO PROTECT EXCLAVE IN SYRIA

World Bulletin, Turkey

Suleiman Shah tomb in Aleppo

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that allegations that
Turkey is providing support to opposition forces in Kesab by letting
them use its territory or through other means during the country’s
conflict are “totally unfounded and untrue.”

World Bulletin / News Desk

Turkey’s Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has said the country’s armed
forces are ready for every possibility regarding Turkish territory in
Syria which is home to the symbolically-important Suleyman Shah Tomb.

Speaking on a private Turkish television channel on Wednesday,
Davutoglu said: “Our troops are ready for every possibility in
the area; it does not matter even if a bad scenario happens in on
election day.”

“We, as a government, are responsible for our country’s freedom.”

Protected by Turkish troops, the Suleyman Shah Tomb — Turkey’s only
exclave — and the surrounding area are located in Aleppo’s Manbij
district, approximately 30 km from the Turkish border.

Turkey’s foreign minister said it was not right for the media to
highlight the tomb issue every day as it made Turkish troops stationed
there concerned.

Radical Islamist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant
(ISIL) — which is locked in intense fighting with anti-government
Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels around the tomb — has allegedly demanded
that Turkish troops leave the region.

On the downing of a Syrian warplane by Turkish jets on Sunday,
Davutoglu said there is nothing more dangerous than not showing
deterrence in time. He also mentioned the jet had been bombing the
Turkmen-populated Bayir-Bucak region of Latakia in Syria.

Davutoglu also slammed the media for acting against Turkey’s interests
about the situation, saying: “Nobody is criticizing his troops before
the international community except these media.”

The foreign minister said Turkey changed the rules of engagement
after a Syrian jet downed Turkish F-16 type plane in 2012 and acted
accordingly.

“Turkey cannot show any weakness about it, the price would be huge,”
he said.

Syrian opposition forces are occupying more towns in the Turkmen
Bayir-Bucak region as clashes with the regime of President Bashar
al-Assad intensify.

For almost a week, conflict in the town of Kesab has raged between
the Syrian regime and the opposition. However, the town has remained
calm since the opposition took over and raised flags at the local
police stations.

TURKEY NOT BACKING OPPOSITION IN KASAB

Turkey’s Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday that allegations that
Turkey is providing support to opposition forces in Kesab by letting
them use its territory or through other means during the country’s
conflict are “totally unfounded and untrue.”

“We consider the efforts of such circles and the developments in the
Kesab region and the painful incidents of the past as a confrontational
political propaganda attempt and particularly condemn it,” said a
statement from the ministry.

Remarking that Turkey is one of the most affected countries of Syria’s
three-year civil war, the ministry said that the country is continuing
to eliminate threats against its national security “as was the case
on 23 March,” when the Turkish armed forces downed a Syrian military
jet for violating its airspace.

Turkey has also been sheltering around 800,000 Syrians and has now
“in accordance with its humanitarian and conscientious responsibility
notified the relevant U.N. bodies that Syrian Armenians residing in
Kesep region could be admitted into Turkey too where they will be
guaranteed protection,” the ministry concluded in its statement.

"Ritual Service" Of Armenian Opposition

“RITUAL SERVICE” OF ARMENIAN OPPOSITION

Vestnik Kavkaza, Russia
March 27 2014

27 March 2014 – 6:33pm

For the last week the main event in the Armenian media has been the
decision of the four opposition parties “Dashnaktsutiun”, “Armenian
National Congress”, “Prosperous Armenia” and “Heritage” to jointly
vote no-confidence in the current government at the meeting of the
National Assembly on April 28. Experts’ opinions on this matter were
immediately divided: some called to support the opposition initiative,
others predicted the imminent disappearance of the Armenian opposition
as such.

Political scientists Alexander Markarov and Alexander Iskandaryan,
in a talk with VK, said that the opposition initiative will definitely
fail. As the director of the Armenian branch of the Institute for the
CIS countries Alexander Markarov said, “considering the disposition
of political forces after the last parliamentary elections, those four
parties together have less votes than the Republican party. Therefore,
they consider a vote of no confidence as a kind of ritual, but in
practice this kind of ritual service cannot shake the positions of
the Cabinet of Ministers.”

The head of the Institute of the Caucasus, Alexander Iskanderyan,
also said that ” the opposition would not manage to push a vote of
no confidence in the parliament because it does not have a majority.”

Nevertheless, according to VK expert Susanna Petrosyan, the actions
of the “no-confidence coalition” show that the opposition is getting
the political initiative in its hands.
