HOVIK ABRAHAMYAN: UN HAS TO AID KARABAKH REFUGEES WITHOUT WAITING FOR POLITICAL RESOLUTION OF THE CONFLICT

RA National Assembly Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan met with Damtew
Dessalegne, Representativeof the United Nations High Commissioner
for Refugees(UNHCR) in Armenia.

Hailing the UN Yerevan Office’s assistance to Armenian refugees,
Speaker Abrahamyan expressed willingness to intensify RA NA-UN
Yerevan Office collaboration through improving refugee issue-related
legislative field. As he emphasized, 3300 refugee families are
currently in need of housing, despite the authorities’ efforts.

He also expressed concerns over UN as well as UNHCR office’s lack of
attention for Karabakh refugees’ problems.

“UN has to aid Karabakh refugees without waiting for political
resolution of the conflict,” Abrahamyan stressed, suggesting
implementation of technical assistance programs jointly with the
Armenian parliament, RA NA press service reported.

SOCHI TO HOST ARMENIAN DIASPORA OF RUSSIA: CHALLENGES OF TIME CONFERENCE

Sochi will host Armenian Diaspora of Russia: Challenges of Time
conference on August 28 and 29 on the initiative of Yerkramas newspaper
and ТВ3В TV channel. The event will bring together scientists and
public figures from Russia, Armenia and Artsakh.

The participants will make reports on Diaspora and Armenia, Diaspora
and Artsakh, Diaspora and Hay Dat as well as Diaspora and Society
topics. Besides, discussions are envisaged, Yerkramas reported.

RA PC SUBCOMMITTEE URGES ARMENIANS TO BOYCOTT EVENT AT SURB KHACH CHURCH

On August 9, the Armenian Public Council subcommittee for preservation
of monuments and national historic values hosted a sitting during
which the subcommittee urged RA and Diaspora Armenians to refrain
from participating in the event organized by Turkish authorities at
Surb Khach Armenian Church in Akhtamar island on September 19.

“In his address to subcommittee, the head of Van-Vaspurakan
expatriates’ community labeled the event as Turkey’s political
provocation, calling on Armenians to refrain from participating,”
subcommittee chairperson Jasmine Asryan told a PanARMENIAN.Net
reporter.

“The subcommittee joins in with the address, believing this to be a
matter of honor for the entire Armenian nation,” she stressed.

ARMENTEL IMPROVES CLIENT SERVICE QUALITY

ArmInfo. ArmenTel (Beeline trademark) announces completion of the
regular stage of the client service quality improvement programme,
the company press service told ArmInfo.

According to the message, the company has repaired 67 sales and
service offices in Yerevan and regions since early 2010. A new Beeline
office has been opened in town of Metsamor, and offices in another 8
settlements have moved to more comfortable places. According to the
source, demonstrative zones for testing of Internet-services, as well
as commercial zones, where telephone sets, computers and notebooks
can be acquired by installment, have been placed in 82 Beeline offices.

ARMENIA RANKS 4TH IN GROWTH OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCE PRICE INDEX

ArmInfo. Armenia occupies the 4th position among the CIS states in
growth of industrial produce price index by 32,6% in Jan-Jun 2010 as
compared to Jan- Jun 2009.

The CIS Interstate Statistical Committee reported 21% growth of
industrial produce price index on CIS states in Jan-Jun 2010.

Azerbaijan occupied the 1st place among the CIS states in growth
of industrial produce price index by 55,5% in Jan-Jun 2010. The 2nd
place is occupied by Tajikistan, with 39,9% growth, the 3rd place –
by Kazakhstan, with 39% growth, the 4th place – by Armenia, the 5the
place – by Kyrgyzstan, with 22,1% growth, the 6th place – by Ukraine,
with 21,1% growth, the 7th place – by Russia, with 19,6% growth, the
8th place – by Belarus, with 10,1% growth, the 9th place – by Moldova,
with 8,5% growth of industrial produce price index.

To recall, 12,3% growth was fixed in Armenia’s industry in Jan-Jun
2010, and in June as compared to May – 6,6% growth. Volume of
industrial produce in absolute terms made up 371 bln drams ($965.2 mln)
or 27,8% of GDP as of July 1, 2010 (ArmInfo).

DEFENSE MINISTRY OF ARMENIA COMMENTS ON INFORMATION ABOUT POSSIBLE PURCHASE OF RUSSIAN S-300 BY AZERBAIJAN

ArmInfo. Defense Ministry of Armenia has commented on a possibility
of purchase of the Russian S-300 by Azerbaijan.

As Defense Minister of Armenia Seyran Ohanyan told journalists,
acquisition of any kind of weapon affects balance of forces in the
region. However, the minister said, S-300 is a weapon of defensive
but not offensive nature. S. Ohanyan also said the Armenian party has
no specific information about acquisition of S-300 by Azerbaijan,
and the Russian media, which disseminated such an information,
afterwards denied it.

VAHRAM MIRAKYAN:GENERALIZATIONS ARE NOT APPROPRIATE WHEN ELUCIDATING ABOUT ARMY

“Elucidating the issues of the army has its delicate points and the
generalizations are not appropriate,” the expert of information policy
Vahram Mirakyan told a press conference today.

He does not share the approach “Either nothing, or only good things
about the army.”

“You must criticize the army. If you don’t, it will loose its
vigilance. But the criticism must be a healthy one,” he said.

By healthy criticism he means speaking about the problems of the army
without generalizations. In a number of publications the resignation of
the Minister of Defense was demanded concerning the recent developments
in the army. According to him, the problem will not be solved by the
minister’s resignation.

Vahram Mirakyan added that when elucidating about the army the official
information must be used. However, he couldn’t say why that official
information often lacks.

ASHOT MELKONYAN:ONE MUST NOT BE SUSPICIOUS ABOUT CONTEMPORANEOUSNESS OF SEVR AGREEMENT

“During the Soviet times, Sevr agreement was presented as a useless
piece of paper. Times have changed and today both historians and
politicians must discuss the issue on the other perspective,” Director
of the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences told
a press conference today.

According to him, the Sevr agreement is an original Nurenbergian
precedent for the solution of the Armenian issue, where the justice,
finally, wins.

He didn’t share the idea that excitation of the Sevr agreement is
adventurism.

“Today, to speak about something that has been legally recorded in 1920
by the Great Powers means to speak about the security of the Republic
of Armenia presenting the world the fact that Armenia is dealing with
the same massacre country, as the denial policy the Turks run decades
long is the continuation of the same genocide,” he told.

According to Ashot Melkonyan, the issues are interrelated and one must
not be suspicious about the contemporaneousness of the Sevr agreement.

“Under the policy of genocide denial, Turkey will apply to the
International Court on the basis that the country is unfairly being
accused in genocide realization. The issue will be discussed in the
International Court very soon and we must be ready,” he added.

On the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the Sevr agreement “Hayazn”
youth union has organized a march. During the march they visited
the embassies in Yerevan of the countries who have signed under that
agreement and passed reminder letters to them.

“The aim of this march is to show that the Armenian youth remembers,
demands and believes in the victory. We are waiting for bringing into
life the Sevr agreement in the near future,” member of the “Hayazn”
youth union Armen Lazarian said.

IRANIAN-ARMENIANS SANG PATRIOTIC SONGS ON MOUNTAIN ARARAT

A group of Iranian-Armenian climbers celebrated the 120th anniversary
of the establishement of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation
(Dashnaktsutyun, ARF-D) party and the 27th anniversary of a
revolutionary action of 5 Armenians in Lisbon on 27 July in 1983.

According to Vardan Davtyan, a journalist from Tehran, the group set
off in the morning of July 18 and reached the summit in the evening.

They waved Armenia’s tricolor flag and the ARF-D army flag and sang
patriotic songs.

The climbers also tried to make fire to burn incense in dedication
of the party and the five deceased Armenians but were unable to do
so due to high winds.

The group consisted of 14 Iranian-Armenians.
