Sourb Khach mass is over

Sourb Khach mass is over

16:32 – 19.09.10

The long-awaited mass in Sourb Khach Church (Saint Cross) in Van was
over at about 3 p. m. Yerevan time. The liturgy was served by
Archbishop Aram Ateshian, Deputy Patriarch of the Constantinople
Patriarchate of the Armenian Church.

Despite early statements the Turkish authorities backtracked on their
promise and failed to restore the cross on the church before the mass
which drew many Armenians into disappointment and resulted in
cancellation of many previously planned trips to Van.

Consequently, many hotel rooms previously booked in Van remained
vacant with only 750 Istanbul-based Armenians arriving in Akhtamar.

About 300-400 foreign guests attended the liturgy service in Sourb
Khach. They came mainly from US, Canada, Germany and other countries.

Mother See of Holly Etchmiadzin also joined many calls to boycott the
mass and did not attend it.

Earlier it had said it would send two high-ranking representatives to
Van to take part in the liturgy service.

Turkey renovated Sourb Khach in 2007 and opened it as a museum where
no loud prayers or masses are allowed.

Armenian-American virtuoso Shahan Arzruni gives a concert in Van

14:56 – 19.09.10

Shahan Arzruni, an accomplished piano virtuoso based in New York, had
a concert in Van on Saturday, prior the mass ceremony to be served in
Sourb Khach Church (Saint Cross) on Akhtamar Island in Eastern Turkey.

The concert took place at the concert hall of the Hundredth Year
University and was attended by Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, the Deputy
Patriarch of the Constantinople Patriarchate of the Armenian Church,
Myunir Karaloglu, the Van Governor, and Hasan Jeylan, the Rector of
that university, as well as many other high-ranking officials.

Armenia violinist Gevorg Davtyan and Turkish violinist Sevil Ulucan
also performed with Mr Arzruni who astonished the audience with his
exclusive talent and was honored by a long applause.

Mr Arzruni had before the concert said that having a concert in Van
was his long-lasting dream and that is must come true to life.
Asked whether it would be possible to overcome the existing problems
between the Armenian and Turkish societies and launch a dialogue, he
said: “Communication is perhaps the only means to understanding each
other’s aspirations, desires, intentions, thoughts and sentiments.
Sometimes a simple smile is enough to communicate a host of feelings.
Whatever the case, I am sure the people who will come to visit
Akhtamar Island on that historic weekend will be met with open arms by
the residents of Van.”

Sourb Khach mass started: Only 350 foreign visitors attend ceremony

Sourb Khach mass started: Only 350 foreign visitors attend the ceremony

13:28 – 19.09.10

At 11 a.m. Van time Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, the Deputy Patriarch of
the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, started serving the mass
at Sourb Khach Church (Saint Cross) on Akhtamar Island in Lake Van,
Eastern Turkey.

It comes almost a century later after Armenians were eventually
deported from their homeland in Western Armenia in 1915 and death
marched to the Syrian desert of Der ez-Zor by the Ottoman troops.

Only 55 people are in the church during the service, while the rest
are following the ceremony on the two big monitors set up in the yard.

According to local Turkish daily Hurriyet, only 750 Istanbul-based
Armenians have arrived in the island and about 300-400 guests from
abroad.

Some 50 policemen are guarding the area surrounding the church, while
500 are inspecting the road to the levee and the levee itself.

The event is being covered by some 118 journalists from Turkey and
some 27 from abroad.

"Don’t Lend Us Our Own Church:" Symbolic liturgy served in Yerevan

“Don’t Lend Us Our Own Church:” Symbolic liturgy served in Yerevan

13:57 – 19.09.10

Local Armenian movement Miasin (Together), in coordination with the
Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute, held today a symbolic liturgy at
the hilltop genocide memorial Tsitsernakaberd in Yerevan.

Held simultaneously with the mass served in Sourb Khach Church (Saint
Cross) in Van, Eastern Turkey, this event organized by the Miasin
movement is meant to be an alternative to the Sourb Khach mass.

The participants went to the eternal fire in Tsitsernakaberd where a
service for the dead was delivered. Then they placed flowers on the
memorial. Many were holding posters that read `Turkey, Be Committed To
Your International Obligations,’ `Don’t Lend Us Our Own Church.’

`Today we have not gathered here to complain; we are strong. Today we
have come here to show the Turkish and the international community
that we stand up to our [cultural heritage], and that no power can any
longer alienate us from our memory, our cultural heritage and our
history,’ Director of the Genocide Museum-Institute Hayk Demoyan said
in his speech.

Mr Demoyan at the same time mentioned that all the borders currently
demarked around Armenia are conventional.

`Being here today is a symbolic message: we will never tolerate that
our cultural heritage, memory be subject to political speculation,’ he
added, representing the symbolism of the day: `Never Forget: Remember
Forever.’

Sourb Khach waiting for mass while tourists pose for photos

11:24 – 19.09.10

Archbishop Aram Ateshyan, Deputy Patriarch of Constantinople will
serve today the long-awaited mass at the Sourb Khach Church (Saint
Cross) on Akhtamar Island, Van, Eastern Turkey.

The liturgy service will take place at 11 a.m. local time (1
p.m. Yerevan time).

Prior to the ceremony Aram Ateshyan met with Van Governor Myunir
Karaloglu.

`No rings will ring at the church, but their ringing will resound in
our ears. I know there has recently been an uneasy situation. But we
tried to explain [to the people] that it is not something
inexperienced hands can do. It will be right if experienced craftsmen
would install the cross, and I am declaring in front of the media that
the cross will be restored after the mass. I have told this all – both
Armenia and the Diaspora. Both our minister and the governor have made
promises over the issue. The cross will be installed no later than in
one and a half month, and we will anoint it afterwards,’ said
Archbishop Ateshyan, expressing his gratitude to Mr Karaloglu for
having organized everything for the mass to be served.

Some 55 people will be inside the Sourb Khach Church during today’s
service, while other guests will follow the ceremony on the two big
screens set up in the yard.

The mass has kicked up a lot of activity in Van with as much as 6000
tourists expected to attend the liturgy. But that number might be
unrealistic after some Armenian tour operators canceled all the
travels to Van amid calls to boycott the mass which many Armenians
consider a show Turkey demonstrates to improve its image.

Mother See of Holly Etchmiadzin also joined the boycott saying it will
not send representatives to Van.

While emotions are running among many Armenians as they prepare to
attend the ceremony, some tourists pose for photos on the pedestal
that the cross is temporarily installed before it will be placed on
the dome.

The event will be covered by 118 journalists from Turkey and 27 others
from abroad.

Renovator criticizes ‘politicization’ of Sourb Khach mass

Renovator criticizes ‘politicization’ of Sourb Khach mass

10:03 ¢ 19.09.10

Quarrels over the erection of a cross on the Sourb Khach Church (Saint
Cross) on Van’s Aktamar Island should not detract from Sunday’s
special religious service to be held there, according to Zakaria
Mildanoglu, architect and renovation expert, who participated in the
renovation of the church.

`I have constantly stated that the cross should not be used for
politics. The cross would be placed on the dome after the renovation
but it has been politicized by both sides so much that it ended up
causing disputes,’ he told the Hurriyet Daily News.

Armenian priests from Istanbul and Deputy Patriarch Archbishop Aram
Atesyan will lead the service in the name of the Armenian Patriarchate
of Turkey in the first service at the historical church in 95 years.

However, the service will not be attended by clerics from the Armenian
Apostolic Central Church of Armenia nor the Jerusalem Armenian
Patriarchate, following a strain in relations which developed after
church renovators in 2007 neglected to erect the cross.

With only hours left before the historic service, which Turkey will
only allow once a year, the issue of the cross on the church is still
causing tensions. Following the Central Church’s declaration that it
would not send clerics if there was no cross, tours transferring
hundreds of Armenians to the eastern province of Van were cancelled.

But the cross was handed to the Armenian Patriarchate of Turkey on
Tuesday and is now on the island, waiting to be blessed at the service
and placed on the dome 1.5 monthlater as Van’s governor Myunil
Karaloglu said.

Mildanoglu said the Istanbul Patriarchate made some mistakes during
the renovation, adding that legal Armenian Istanbul Patriarch Mesrop
Mutafyan did not want to attend the church when he heard it would open
as a museum.

`The renovations were the first step, it was obvious even in those
days that service in church would be allowed. He did not accept when I
told him we should make preparations,’ Mildanoglu said.

`The [Istanbul] Patriarchate could have made an important mission, it
could have provided steady information sharing with the Jerusalem
Armenian Patriarchate. This type of mediation could have eliminated
misunderstandings and tension,’ he said.

According to Hurriyet Daily News even Armenian President Serzh
Sargsyan could have been invited to the service, had everything been
done calmly with the Istanbul Patriarchate presenting its demands to
the Turkish government formally.

`Such an invitation would benefit the dialogue between the two
countries. Also, a representative from the Vatican could have been
invited; Greek Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew and the Turkish
President of Religious Affairs could have been invited. Such
approaches would have minimized tension and disputes,’ he said.

MildanoÄ?lu said Turkey took an important step by allowing the service
to go ahead.

`We would have been in danger 20 years ago just by using the term `the
Armenian Problem.’ However, we are discussing everything freely today.
It was forbidden to even mention the existence of Armenians in
Anatolia back then, but today Armenian historical artifacts are being
renovated. We cannot ignore this,’ he said.

A common opinion in Armenia and among the Armenian diaspora is that
Turkey is making political maneuvers, simply renovating churches under
its control to aid its ascension bid to the European Union. Another
prominent opinion is that Turkey is renovating the artifacts to
transform them into tourist destinations.

Mildanoglu said he did not think the latter suggestion was necessarily
a problem, however.

`Thousands of historical churches are open for tourism in Armenia;
they earn income from tourism, too. It is only natural ` it is the
same everywhere in the world. It is not right to politicize everything
so much,’ he said.

Azad-Hye Editorial: Akhtamar Pilgrimage: to attend or not to attend?

Azad-Hye Editorial: Akhtamar Pilgrimage: to attend or not to attend?

Following the Armenian Genocide (1915-1923), thousands of Armenian
churches and historical monuments were destroyed in Western Armenia
(now part of Turkey). Many churches were converted into mosques. This
century long policy is well known in the Armenian history as “cultural
genocide”, a parallel to the physical genocide. Hundreds of historical
locations were renamed with Turkish names; in order to conceal their
real identities. Even species of animals and plants were deprived from
their Latin scientific names that carried a kind of relationship with
“Armenia” and were replaced with new names.
As the Turkish society embarked into new era of changes, the
authorities in Turkey tried to promote a “zero problem” policy with
the neighbours. The last in these series of reconciliations was the
Armenian nation. Since the historical injustice befallen on this
nation was the worst, reconciliation measures faced big problems,
mostly related to the Turkish taboo of the Armenian Genocide and the
psychology of dealing with former second category citizens. Prime
Minister Erdogan went as far as to conclude that “it’s not possible
for a Muslim to commit genocide” and since Turks are Muslims then
there is no genocide!
The new game is to show how tolerant is Turkey towards the Armenians
and other nations. This is staged now in Akhtamar island in Lake Van,
in the vicinity of a place that used to be the heart of Western
Armenia and where until the early years of the 20th century hundreds
of thousands Armenians lived. Akhtamar was the base of a Catholicosate
(church center) that lasted for more than 8 centuries.
Turkey now expects the descendants of these Armenians to come and
attend a holy mass permitted exceptionally to take place there on a
particular date (19 September 2010). There would be no cross, no
whatsoever Armenian signs or symbols. Instead, the worshipers would be
greeted with a big Turkish flag and possibly a huge portrait of
Ataturk. The church has been neglected for decades (it survived total
destruction due to the fact that it is located on an abandoned
island). It was renovated in 2007 and opened as a museum and continues
to be a museum.
How rightful is to make a holy mass in a church that has been
confiscated and turned into a museum? How correct is to perform a
divine liturgy in an altar that would be desecrated after only few
hours of the departure of the worshippers? These are issues that need
to be considered by the Armenians who plan to attend this event.
It is an act of loyalty and national quest to visit Armenian
historical places and show that they are not left alone to their cruel
destiny. We believe, however, that this kind of visits should not be
part of an event organized and orchestrated by the Turkish
authorities, serving dully the political agenda. We prefer Armenian
pilgrims visiting places where other Armenians live, such as Beirut,
Aleppo, Der Zor, Isfahan, Kolkata, Venice, Jerusalem, etc., where they
would be able to partake in Armenian rituals and communicate with the
devoted people who are preserving these places, without being
humiliated or exploited in propaganda games.
