Azerbaijanis in the U.S. are trying to prevent PBS from screening of
a documentary about the Nagorno Karabakh. They insists that the film
“distorts the conflict story.”

PBS will air the award-winning “A Story of People in War and Peace”
documentary on October 24.

The film directed by Vardan Hovhannisyan is a portrayal of life in
the trenches for Armenian soldiers and medics struggling to defend
their homeland.

The film screened on BBC, ARTE and other international channels, has
won over 20 awards, including the FIPRESCI (International Federation
of Film Critics) prize and Best New Documentary Filmmaker Prize at
the Tribeca Film Festival in New York.

Diaspora Media Must Focus On Javakhk

DIASPORA MEDIA MUST FOCUS ON JAVAKHK

diaspora politics

Artur Ghukasyan, editor of the “Hayrenik” weekly published in Spain
called on the media in the diaspora to spread the word about the
needs of Javakhk and to see to it that assistance sent there actually
reaches those in need.

Mr. Ghukasyan made the pleas at the recent Forum of Armenian
Journalists that took place in Stepanakert, capital of the Armenian
Republic of Artsakh (ARA). He was commenting on the remarks made by
Myasnik Khrimyan, a reporter with the Akhalkalak-based “ATV-12â~@³
television station, regarding the security and other issues faced by
Armenian journalists in Javakhk.

Mr. Ghukasyan remarked that his paper periodically covered developments
in Javakhk and attempts made by the Georgian authorities to depopulate
the region of Armenians.

He declared that Javakhk would never become another Nakhijevan
(referring to the autonomous region of Azerbaijan whose Armenian
population was forced out during Soviet rule), but rather a new
Artsakh.

Mr. Ghukasyan called for the adoption of a new strategy regarding
Georgia which would seek to foster good relations rather than enmity.

The editor said Armenians must become con artists to a certain degree
like our opponents and that politics of the 21 century demands such
an approach.

CALIFORNIA ARMENIANS FOR JERRY BROWN CONCLUDES SUCCESSFUL VOTER REGISTRATION DRIVE

Asbarez
Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

Newly naturalized citizen, Yousef Ovehian, submits his completed
voter registration form at Glendale City Hall.

GLENDALE, Calif.- California Armenians for Jerry Brown, in partnership
with the Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region
(ANCA-WR), today concluded its successful voter registration and
education drive by registering over 500 of their neighbors, friends,
and family members throughout the state.

“We have put an emphasis on registering new voters and getting out the
vote because it’s absolutely important that Armenian Americans cast
their ballots for Jerry Brown. He has a proven record of supporting
issues important to our community over the course of 40 years,” said
Berdj Karapetian, Chairman of California Armenians for Jerry Brown.

The voter registration drive ended on the steps of Glendale City Hall
on the deadline to register to vote. Volunteers spent the day visiting
senior centers and provided transportation to voter registration
sites at city halls throughout Los Angeles County. In recent weeks,
the group organized voter registration booths at church services,
community events, and on college campuses. California Armenians for
Jerry Brown also set out to make it easier to vote for the elderly
and disabled by encouraging families to register to vote by mail.

“The Armenian American community in California is clearly enthusiastic
about participating in the democratic process by casting their votes
this November. People were eager to register everywhere we went”, said
Armine Sargsyan, a volunteer with California Armenians for Jerry Brown.

California Armenians for Jerry Brown is an unprecedented statewide
effort to get out the vote and elect Jerry Brown as the next Governor
of California. This grassroots movement has already tapped into
volunteers in the Golden State who have reached out to their neighbors
through coordinated canvassing and phone-banking to advocate on behalf
of Jerry Brown.

The ANCA-WR is the largest and most influential Armenian American
grassroots advocacy organization in the Western United States. Working
in coordination with a network of offices, chapters, and supporters
throughout the Western United States and affiliated organizations
around the country, the ANCA-WR advances the concerns of the Armenian
American community on a broad range of issues.

BG: Short Takes: THE GENDARME By Mark T. Mustian

SHORT TAKES: THE GENDARME BY MARK T. MUSTIAN
By Amanda Heller
By Murray Bail

Other, 208 pp., paperback, $14.95

Urban versus rural. The active versus the contemplative life. The Old
World versus the antipodean New. Numerous such dichotomies are examined
in this handsomely written novel by the Australian author Murray Bail.

As a disembodied narrative voice observes early on, philosophy needs
dank winters and venerable surroundings; it is alien to sun-baked,
extroverted Australia. It is therefore with some skepticism that
philosophy professor Erica Hazelhurst makes the seven-hour drive
from Sydney into the outback to inspect the papers of the late Wesley
Antill, who, while working in obscurity on the sheep farm run by his
brother and sister, may possibly have composed a genuine Australian
philosophical oeuvre, a theory of the emotions.

Erica and her excitable friend Sophie, whom she has taken along for
company, confront their own emotions as they experience this unfamiliar
yet oddly comforting place. Meanwhile, a parallel plotline consisting
of Wesley’s diaries – a portrait of the philosopher as a young man –
solves the mystery of his unlikely intellectual development and his
sudden withdrawal into seclusion.

A certain sketchiness notwithstanding – this is one novel that might
have benefited from less rather than more concision – “The Pages”
presents a mature exploration of matters of the heart as well as
the mind.

MY FATHER’S PLACES: A Memoir by Dylan Thomas’s Daughter By Aeronwy
Thomas Skyhorse, 224 pp., illustrated, $19.95

It was the “house on stilts” Dylan Thomas described in “Poem on His
Birthday” – the “Boat House” in the Welsh village of Laugharne where he
moved his growing family in 1949 in order to concentrate on his poetry.

The turbulent marriage of Dylan and Caitlin Thomas has been well
documented. In “My Father’s Places” their daughter, Aeronwy, offers
an extraordinarily acute and pungent child’s-eye view. The Boat House
years were a topsy-turvy country idyll punctuated by flying crockery
and the frequent spectacle of the poet and his wife rolling around
the cottage floor, attempting to throttle the overabundant life out
of each other. Little Aeronwy had two regular chores: to fetch her
father back from the pub at her exasperated mother’s command, and to
tend her baby brother while her parents went out carousing every night.

Unsurprisingly, she developed a wild and defiant streak herself.

This chapter of her life was as brief as it was chaotic: Aeronwy was
only 10 when Dylan Thomas left on his final, fatal American tour. So
vividly does she evoke the ambiguous gift of a bohemian childhood,
it comes as a shock to learn that she died last year at 66, just
before this memoir was published.

THE GENDARME By Mark T. Mustian Amy Einhorn/Putnam, 304 pp., $25.95

The year is 1990. A 92-year-old World War I veteran named Emmett Conn
should be spending his final years in tranquility on the porch of his
south Georgia home. Instead, he is besieged by horrifying nightmares
as a brain tumor unpacks memories long hidden in the attic of his
unconscious.

His real name, he now acknowledges, is Ahmet Khan, and as a young
recruit in the Turkish militia, he participated in a crime against
humanity, the deadly forced march driving ethnic Armenians –
men, women, and children – out of Turkey. Among the captives was
an indomitable girl named Araxie, with whom he became obsessed. A
captive himself now of old age and illness, Emmett, tormented by guilt,
decides he must find her, if she is still alive, and beg forgiveness.

“The Gendarme” is clearly a labor of love for Mark Mustian, who is by
trade a lawyer, not a novelist. The historical facts of the Armenian
genocide need to be told, though he tells them with a grating mix of
exotic color and earnest didacticism. If good intentions were all,
the book might be judged a success, but there is more to writing
convincing fiction than honorable intent.

Arthur Abraham Reaches Out To Public At Germany’s Federal Chanceller

ARTHUR ABRAHAM REACHES OUT TO PUBLIC AT GERMANY’S FEDERAL CHANCELLERY

ProBoxing-Fans.com
Oct 20 2010

King Arthur presents integration campaign to encourage learning
German language for foreigners: Three months after meeting German
chancellor Angela Merkel in training camp, King Arthur Abraham today
was a featured guest at the famous Federal Chancellery in Berlin. The
immensely popular 30-year-old is one of the testimonials for the
far-reaching integration campaign, which was presented at “Germany´s
White House” in front of high-ranking members of the national and
international press.

Stressing the importance of German language skills, the campaign aims
to encourage young foreigners to properly learn German as part of a
successful integration into society. “I know from my own experience
how important it is to speak the language of the country you live
in,” King Arthur said at the press conference, which was hosted by
Professor Dr. Maria Bohmer, the government’s integration expert. “I
came from Armenia to Germany when I was 15 years old and I immediately
started to learn German. The communication with the people around you
is crucial for a successful integration, for a successful and happy
life. That is why I am proud to support this campaign.”

Abraham joined forces with celebrities from sports, entertainment and
politics – such as German football international Jerome Boateng, rapper
Sido and rhythmic gymnastics star Magdalena Brzeska – to be featured
in advertising and poster campaigns. The portraits show the stars
with their tongues coloured in black-red-gold, the German national
colours. The catchy German slogan “Raus mit der Sprache. Rein ins
Leben.” roughly translates to “Speak up. Join life.” Said Abraham:
“The idea is to encourage as many young foreign people living in
Germany as possible to learn the language so that they can interact
with others and be successfully integrated into society. I am thrilled
to be a part of this campaign and I hope that many people will follow
our example and learn to speak German.”

On November 27 in Helsinki, King Arthur – for once – will prefer
to let his fists do the talking when he takes on Carl “The Cobra”
Froch for the vacant WBC Super-Middleweight Title in the third round
of the Super Six World Boxing Classic. Tickets are available via the
Finnish ticket hotline + 358 600 900 900 and online at

ANCA-WR Endorses Mike Villines For California Insurance Commissioner

ANCA-WR ENDORSES MIKE VILLINES FOR CALIFORNIA INSURANCE COMMISSIONER

Asbarez
Wednesday, October 20th, 2010
GLENDALE, Calif.

The Armenian National Committee of America – Western Region (ANCA-WR)
on Wednesday announced the endorsement of Republican Assemblyman Mike
Villines for California Insurance Commissioner.

Mike Villines has a long history of working with Armenian Americans
to support issues important to our community. He was first elected
to the California Assembly in 2004 but his career in public service
dates back to days he served as an aide to former Governor Pete Wilson
and later Chief-of-Staff to former State Senator Chuck Poochigian.

In 2006, Assemblyman Villines voted for legislation which removed the
statute of limitations for 10 years so that the families of Armenian
Genocide victims could file claims against insurance companies to
recover assets stolen or lost between 1890 and 1923. The legislation
was introduced by then State Senator Jackie Speier and signed into law
by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger. He has also consistently supported
legislation commemorating the Armenian Genocide.

Villines was elected leader of the California State Assembly Republican
Caucus by his colleagues in 2006 and served in that leadership role
for 2 ½ years. He led the Republican Caucus through tumultuous budget
deliberations and was instrumental in reaching a bipartisan budget
agreement in 2009 to close California’s $42 billion budget deficit. The
agreement included some very difficult choices for both parties. For
his efforts at achieving a bipartisan compromise, Mike Villines was
awarded the prestigious John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award, along
with three other legislators, for working together to find a bipartisan
solution to a staggering budget crisis in the face of strong adversity.
