Armenia is far behind the other CIS member-countries in terms of
foreign trade balance. This January-July, Armenia’s unfavorable
foreign trade balance reached U.S. $1.7 billion. Belarus ranks 2nd
(U.S. $4.2 billion), followed by Ukraine (U.S. $3.4 billion). However,
the two countries’ foreign trade turnover is several dozen tomes as
much as that of Armenia.

Russia, Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan registered favorable foreign trade
balance. Specifically, Russia’s favorable foreign trade balance
totaled U.S. $105 billion – a record figure throughout the country’s
history. It is 62% more than in the corresponding period last year.

The main reason is the rise in oil prices. Azerbaijan registered
favorable foreign trade balance of U.S. $8.5 against U.S. $3.8 billion
last year.

VISITS OF EUROPEAN OR AMERICAN DEPUTIES TO KARABAKH RIGHT PATH TO KARABAKH RECOGNITION: MP

Azerbaijan feels more nervous when European or American deputies,
foreign officials visit Karabakh than if Karabakh is provided
with arms. This means every visit makes Karabakh a legitimate,
independent and autonomous society and Azerbaijan doesn’t like it,
Armenian National Assembly ARF Dashnaktsutyun MP Vahan Hovhannisyan
told reporters today.

According to him, this is why Azerbaijan announces everyone having
visited or visiting Karabakh as a “person non-grata” and makes
every effort to prevent such visits. “This means that this is the
very point we should stick to,” the MP said. Such visits should be
continual and then Armenia will have a victory: “This is the right
path and we should take it,” V. Hovhannisyan said.

To achieve Karabakh recognition, we need to work through phases, like
establish sister territories, organize international culture festivals,
implement cultural-educational programs, etc., he highlighted.

The president of Russian Liberal-Democratic Party Vladimir
Zhirinovski talked to “Vesti.az” making his observations and
personal view points over the perspectives of the Nagorno-Karabakh
conflict resolution. During the interview, Mr. Zhirinovski supported
his pro-Armenian disposition saying:

“Maybe my opinion appeared when I was flying to Baghdad, I remember,
Tehran didn’t allow to use its air territory, Baku refused to accept
our plane, and Yerevan accepted us. Or maybe, Armenian Ambassador to
Russia invites me to the Embassy to attend different events, while
Azerbaijani Ambassador has never invited me.”

Referring to the conflict, Zhirinovski said: “The problem of
Nagorno-Karabakh is a difficult one and reminds me Kosovo. Serbia
condemns Kosovo’s liberation, but the EU standards support national
minorities.” According to him if Abkhazia and South Ossetia were in
Europe, they would be recognized by them, but now the situation is
linked with Russia.

“Turkey supports Azerbaijan, and Russia, it turned out, supports the
Armenian disposition, There surely exist such a conflict,” Russian
deputy said.

The politician didn’t exclude Russian forces support to Armenia in
case of resuming of the military activities. “It depends on Armenian
authorities, if they ask for an aid, they will get it,” Russian
politician said.

ANKARA WELCOMES ASTRAKHAN DEAL ON KARABAKH TALKS

Turkey

The Turkish capital has welcomed the results of a trilateral meeting
hosted last week by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, at which
the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan reached an agreement on
certain humanitarian issues related to the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute,
a territorial dispute between Baku and Yerevan.

“Turkey hopes that the Astrahan summit will make a positive
contribution to the resolution process via accelerating efforts for
the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute; within this framework,
it hopes that steps to be taken in humanitarian field will be supported
and strengthened via similar measures to be improved in other fields,”
the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a written statement released
on Sunday.

The latest round of talks held between Armenian President Serzh
Sarksyan and Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev in the Russian city of
Astrahan through Medvedev’s initiative resulted in a joint declaration
in which the sides agreed on the need for confidence-building
measures, including a prisoners of war and human remains swap “with
the assistance of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in
Europe (OSCE) Minsk Group co-chairs and the International Committee
of the Red Cross.”

At the end of the meeting, Medvedev said he hoped Baku and Yerevan
could agree on the principles of a long-awaited peace deal for the
breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh by early December.

Israeli Tourism Minister Urges Israelis To Boycott Turkey

ISRAELI TOURISM MINISTER URGES ISRAELIS TO BOYCOTT TURKEY

Ammon News

Oct 31 2010

AMMONNEWS – Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Mesezhnikov called Israelis
to boycott Turkey, citing that the boycott is for Israeli ‘national
honor’ and urged Israelis to stop traveling to Turkey for vacation
following reports that Turkey classified Israel as a ‘strategical
threat,’ Israeli media reported on Sunday.

The Israeli Minister’s statements came after Turkish media reported
on Saturday that the Turkish National Security Council approved
significant changes in a document which contains threats against
Turkey claiming that Israel is now a major threat to the country.

Israeli newspapers indicated the document stated that Israel’s actions
may cause countries in the region to begin an “arms race.”

The Council document decided to remove Iran- which was previously a
major threat to Ankara- ,Syria, Bulgaria, Georgia and Armenia from
the list of countries that pose a threat to Turkey, Haaretz reported.

Relations between the two countries hit a new low last May after
Israeli commandos killed nine Turkish peace activists on board the
flotilla that attempted to breach Israel’s naval blockade of the
Gaza Strip.

BAKU: US Congressman James P. Moran Sends Letter To Azerbaijani Dias

US CONGRESSMAN SENDS LETTER TO AZERBAIJANI DIASPORA

Azerbaijan

James P. Moran from the State of Virginia has sent a letter to the
Azerbaijani Diaspora. US Congressmen James P. Moran from the State
of Virginia has sent a letter to the Azerbaijani Diaspora stressing
that he will “continue to encourage Department of State to help the
Azerbaijan and Armenia resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and move
forward in peace and security.

Senator Moran, who represents one of the States, most crowded with
Azerbaijani-Americans, joined Congressional Azerbaijan Caucus as
Azerbaijan’s request. “The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan
has gone on for too long and has cost many lives. The Khojaly massacre
of 1992 was a terrible atrocity”, Mr. Moran mentioned in his letter.

The Congressmen reminded that the United States has actively supported
the multilateral effort to affect a resolution of all aspects of the
conflict through the Minsk Group, currently co-chaired by Russia,
France, and the U.S. with representation from Turkey, several European
nations, Armenia, and Azerbaijan.

“I have been to the Caucuses and have seen firsthand the issues
that continue to plague the area, and will continue to encourage our
Department of State to help the parties resolve the conflict and move
forward in peace and security”, he said.
