Saint Cross Church On Akhtamar And The Issues Of The Armenian Identi

SAINT CROSS CHURCH ON AKHTAMAR AND THE ISSUES OF THE ARMENIAN IDENTITY
Ruben Melkonyan

09.11.2010

Existing facts allow us to consider that various circumstances may
serve as a stimulus for reclaiming Armenians living on the territory
of Turkey and being on different stages of assimilation. In this
aspect the Armenian-Turkish contacts observed in recent years, visits
of Armenian tourists to Western Armenia, books on Armenian topics
published in Turkey and other factors contribute to strengthening
of significance of a true identity of the Islamized Armenians. Let
us consider this interesting phenomenon in the context of the recent
liturgy offered in the church of St. Cross on the island of Akhtamar
at the lake of Van, which occupied considerable place on the Armenian
public and political agenda, and some attendant and following events.

Even today it is obvious that Turkish propaganda machine tried to take
advantage the fact that it was allowed to offer liturgy in St. Cross
Church, but, on a large scale, it has broken down. Alongside with
the negative show arranged by Turkey, rather remarkable process
was initiated: the liturgy in St. Cross Church became an important
incentive to expose a true identity of crypto-Armenians and their
generations living in different districts of Western Armenia.

Here we find it necessary to explain: as it is known, during the
Armenian Genocide and over the years to follow it in Turkey cultural
genocide was perpetrated which victims were more than two thousand
Armenian churches, monasteries and sacred places. Destruction of the
churches and monasteries had a direct impact on the identity of the
Islamized Armenians, because in case when in fact neither Armenian
language nor culture existed there, even nonworking churches could
be the keepers of their identity and silent witnesses of the former
Armenian presence. That means that under such conditions church turns
from an architectural structure into the component of the Armenian
identity and in some cases into its only component.

In this aspect it should be mentioned that Islamized or
crypto-Armenians till now organize pilgrimages to the ruins of the
Armenian churches. One of such examples is the annual pilgrimage
to the monastery of Most Holy Mother of God at Maruta mount in
Sasun, which has been in fact ~Sexposed~T and become a center of
the attention of Turkish media for recent couple of years. Besides
there are many other examples about which we have learned during our
personal meetings with the descendants of the converted Armenians who
live in different parts of Western Armenia. E.g. on definite days
a secret pilgrimage to the monastery of Msho Arakelots and ruins
of churches in Dersim is arranged. Another example about which we
learnt in 2008 in Mush may speak about the importance of the Armenian
churches even though demolished for the generations of the Islamized
and crypto-Armenians. Thus, in 1980 the state demolished one of the
Armenian churches in Mush and built a school on its place. During
the building the stones from the church were used, and as one of the
residents of Mush, Armenian by his descent, told us, crypto-Armenians
living in the city arranged for not sending their children to that
school.

Going back to St. Cross Church on Akhtamar, it should be mentioned that
the fuss made by the authorities around the church had rather opposite
effect on the Islamized Armenians; in fact, Turkish state restored
the Armenian church on its own, opened it, allowed offering liturgy,
called Armenian tourists to visit Akhtamar and etc. It means that
state attitude was formed in regard to St. Cross Church and this,
is quite unique phenomenon too, because in the eastern districts
of Turkey St. Cross is the only church which is recognized though
indirectly by the Turkish state as the Armenian. This circumstance
instills confidence in the generations of the Islamized Armenians
who can now visit the ruined Armenians sacred places not secretly
but can go pilgrimage to St. Cross Church which, however, does not
have a status of a church but is considered a museum.

This phenomenon glared on the day of liturgy and that news was spread
at once. To our joy this did not escape the attention of the Armenian
journalists who were present in Van during the liturgy and they
passed rather interesting details. E.g. the correspondent of news.am
information site Andranik Ispiryan mentioned in his article: ~SJoy and
tears of the crypto-Armenians who arrived to Akhtamar from Van, Mush,
Sasun, Dersim, Hamshen and other districts of Turkey spoke about the
patience and courage of those people. People who arrived from Mush by
20 cars and minibuses to participate in liturgy were putting candles,
kissing the unplaced cross and crying. … Seeing Armenians around many
tried to tell, to express what they had been concealing for decades~T,
The remarkable story is also presented by the journalist of ~SAravot~T
newspaper Gohar Hakobyan: the grandson of an Islamized Armenian, 38
years-old Sinan Demirbas told Armenian journalist that his grandfather
Cafer who had died five years before that, had told to his family
before the death that he had been Armenian and he had even shown his
family photos which he had hidden for decades. According to Sinan there
are thousands of Islamized Armenians and their generations in Van.

Some Islamized Armenians who were on the island after the liturgy,
tried to find their relatives in Armenia; they told their old
Armenian surnames, Armenian names of their parents, grandfathers and
grandmothers and asked those who came from Armenia to help them.

On those days the theme of conversion (reconversion to the
Christianity) of the Islamized Armenians was widely debated in media,
and there was an attempt to connect it with the liturgy in St. Cross
Church. The issue was presented on the example of the relatives of
the locum tenens of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul Archbishop
Aram Ateshian. Thus, sister and brother-in-law of the Archbishop Aram
Ateshian were obliged to convert to Islam in the 1950s. It has been
mentioned in media for several times that the high-ranking priest
has Muslim relatives and this was not denied by him either. And so,
not long ago, information was spread that in May 2010 the relatives of
Aram Ateshian living in Dyarbakir ~V 33 years-old Mesure Kaplan and 28
years-old Cihan Beskinsiz converted to Christianity. They also changed
their national identity, wrote down as Armenians and took Armenian
names: Mesure became Sirun, and Cihan ~V Paret. After reconverting
to Christianity they told that their family had concealed its true
identity for decades: at home and in the Armenian environment they were
Armenians and outside or at work they behaved liked Muslims and even
their inner circle did not know that they were not Kurds but Armenians.

Intra-communal marriages are also spread among the Armenians in
Dyarbakir. E.g. husband of Mesure-Sirun, Kudbettin Kaplan is a
crypto-Armenian who has also converted to Christianity. Those who
have reclaimed their roots also mentioned that they were going to be
baptized in St. Kirakos church in Dyarbakir which has been restored
recently.

The locum tenens of the Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul Aram Ateshian
has also turned to the process of reconversion which emerged among
the crypto-Armenians: ~SMany Armenians in Anatolia never dare to say
that they are Armenians. The more democratic our country is the more
people will reclaim their religion. Even today the youth from all
over the Turkey ~V Tunceli, Trebizond, Kostamonu ~V turns to us in
order to find out the roots of their families~T.

It should also be mentioned that the liturgy which was offered in St.

Cross Church on Akhtamar and the information about the reconversion
of the Islamized Armenians led to the negative reaction of the
chauvinist Turkish press and figures; they repeated their previous
similar theses. The falsifier of history Yusuf Alacoglu also touched
upon this topic, mentioning that there are at least 500 thousand
crypto-Armenians.

Summing up, let us mention that all the aforementioned processes come
to prove once more that the issues of the ethnic identity in Turkey
are widening and being manifested in new ways.

Experts Mull Impact Of US Mid-Term Polls On Relations With Armenia,

EXPERTS MULL IMPACT OF US MID-TERM POLLS ON RELATIONS WITH ARMENIA, TURKEY

BBC Monitoring from Public Television of Armenia & Azg (Armenia)
Nov 5 2010

The result of the US mid-term elections holds out good prospects
for the recognition of the “Armenian genocide” in the US Congress,
since 90 per cent of pro-Armenian members have been re-elected, the
state-owned Armenian Public TV quoted an Armenian American political
expert, Richard Giragosian, as saying in its 4 November report.

Giragosian was shown telling a news conference in Yerevan, “We will
see the Republicans, and many in Congress will be more pro-Armenian
than in the past. We will also see that anti-Turkish moods will grow.”

The chances of passing draft resolution 252 on recognition of the
“Armenian genocide” have improved, because the Republicans, who won a
majority in the House of Representatives, want to use the resolution
to punish Turkey over problems in Turkish-Israeli relations and a
lot of formerly pro-Turkish Republicans now support the resolution,
the channel quoted Giragosian as saying.

“We will also see expressions of revenge on the part of Israel and the
Israeli lobby – this means that the resolution on the Armenian genocide
will be discussed much earlier than in April – as [currently] expected;
and Turkey will not be ready to defend itself from the resolution,”
Giragosian was shown saying. “If the vote on the genocide resolution
does not take place this year, it will definitely be introduced in
the new Congress, in January, and no problem will emerge at that time,
because the new Congress will be more pro-Armenian and back recognition
of the Armenian genocide.”

Giragosian was also quoted as saying that the Republicans are in
general anti-Azerbaijani because they do not have links to US oil
companies and they are unhappy with the Azerbaijani leader Ilham
Aliyev for opposing the normalization of Armenian-Turkish ties.

Meanwhile the Armenian daily Azg reported on 4 November that Armenian
political experts are divided over the extent to which the election
will benefit Armenia and Karabakh.

In an article by M.Kh. titled “Impact of US elections on Armenian
reality”, a senior member of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation –
Dashnaktsutyun, Kiro Manoyan, was quoted as saying that the House
of Representatives may review the current US Department of State ban
on aid to Karabakh and new opportunities may emerge for progress in
initiatives linked to Armenia, Karabakh and the “Armenian genocide”.

However, the paper also noted the existence of pessimistic voices
among experts. “Other opinions are voiced as well, which express
the approach that changes in US policy on these issues [Armenia,
Karabakh] are not very much likely – irrespective of the balance
of forces in the Congress and the Senate – as the US foreign policy
agenda is based solely on the agenda of this country’s foreign policy
strategy,” it wrote.

Azerbaijan Says Karabakh Conflict Is Not Interracial

AZERBAIJAN SAYS KARABAKH CONFLICT IS NOT INTERRACIAL

Interfax
Nov 8 2010
Russia

The Azeri Foreign Ministry has asked UN countries to call on Armenia
to prevent attempts to present the Karabakh conflict as interracial
and inter-religious.

“Azerbaijan believes that the international community will be able
to put an end to the Armenian policies based on racial and religious
motives and convince it to stop the occupation of Azerbaijani land,
drop its territorial claims on neighboring countries and establish
civilized relationships with the countries of the region for the sake
of long-term peace, security and stability in the Southern Caucasus,”
the Foreign Ministry reported.

An official letter by the Azeri representation in the UN addressed
to the UN general-secretary, which criticized the statement made by
Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan, has been disseminated among the
UN members.

According to Armenian media reports. Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan
said in a meeting with Armenian journalists in Goris on October 16,
2010, citing studies conducted by genetics and linguistics experts,
that the Armenian language has a history of at least 8,000 years and
the Armenians as a nation have existed for at least 8,000 years. “The
population of the territory [Nagorno-Karabakh] was homogenous for
thousands of years: it was populated solely by Armenians, which is
confirmed even by Turkish official sources of the 18th century,”
he said. “Turk and Muslim nomad tribes, which accounted for a mere
5% of the total population at the beginning of the 20th century,
began settling there only in the second half of the 18th century,”
Sargsyan was quoted by the Armenian media as saying.

In the meantime, Azerbaijan found that the statement made by the
Armenian president alleged “the supremacy of Armenians over other
peoples, including Azerbaijanis, whom the Armenian president called
a Turk nomad tribe.”

“It is regrettable that the Armenian president has forgotten how
much suffering such ‘genetic tests’ have inflicted on the world,”
the Azeri Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said the Armenian administration has made such statements
before. “The statement made by former Armenian President Robert
Kocharian on the ‘ethnic incompatibility of Armenians and Azerbaijanis
draw just anger from the international community,” the statement says.

“The statements made by Serzh Sargsyan clearly indicate that supremacy
and the ideology of hatred occupy the main place in the state ideology
of Armenia,” the Azeri Foreign Ministry said.

The Karabakh problem may have a military solution if Armenia continues
to occupy Azerbaijani lands, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said
at a funeral of two Azerbaijani servicemen killed in deterring Armenian
attacks on Azerbaijani positions.

“We will hold negotiations as long as there is hope for peaceful
restoration of our territorial integrity. If we see that this is
impossible, the Azerbaijani state will restore its territorial
integrity in a military way,” the president said.

High readiness and morale of Azerbaijani servicemen make the military

Turkey Vs. Christian Action Network

TURKEY VS. CHRISTIAN ACTION NETWORK
Posted by Ryan Mauro

Nov 9th, 2010

Ryan Mauro is the founder of WorldThreats.com, National Security
Advisor to the Christian Action Network, and an intelligence analyst
with the Asymmetric Warfare and Intelligence Center.

The Christian Action Network (CAN), where I serve as the National
Security Adviser, is being condemned by Turkey’s ambassador to the
U.S. for using the Turkish flag on the cover of the organization’s new
documentary, Sacrificed Survivors: The Untold Story of the Ground Zero
Mosque. Ambassador Namik Tan is accusing the CAN of slandering the
Turkish people by using the flag and criticizing their government’s
Islamist agenda. This accusation of bigotry is an attempt to distract
from Turkey’s move away from secularism to the side of Iran, Syria,
Hamas, and Sudan.

The controversy erupted when the Turkish media criticized the use
of the flag on the cover of the film. CAN says they wanted to use a
flag with Islamic symbols to emphasize the connection between radical
Islam’s goal of promoting Sharia-based governance and the Ground Zero
mosque. The Turkish flag was chosen because as the CIA World Factbook
explains, “the crescent moon and star serve as insignia for the Turks,
as well as being traditional symbols of Islam.”

The organization said it regretted any hurt feelings caused by the
decision and it did not mean to single out Turkey. CAN sought to
rectify the situation by adding the flags of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan,
Iran, and Sudan to the cover to identify some places where radical
Islam has taken hold and is being promoted from. Turkey’s flag
remained to serve as an example of how a secular, Western ally like
Turkey can fall to the influence of Islamism as it has under Prime
Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his Justice and Development Party.

Ambassador Namik Tan wrote a letter on November 4 to Martin Mawyer,
President of CAN, berating him for “unacceptable and unfair accusations
about Turkey, the Turkish government and the Turkish people in your
website.” He wrote, “You inaccurately and insultingly accuse the
Turkish people and the government of supporting ‘radical Islam.'” He
acknowledges that the group denies branding the Turkish people as a
whole, but says CAN is doing this in “reckless fashion.”

However, CAN’s criticism of the Erdogan government made a specific
point of explaining that the majority of Turks are not sympathetic to
terrorist groups or radical Islam. Polls show that only four percent
support suicide bombings, two percent have confidence in Osama Bin
Laden to do the right thing, three percent have a favorable view
of Hezbollah, and five percent have a favorable view of Hamas. The
backlash among the Turkish people against Erdogan’s Islamist agenda
was also mentioned.

The warnings about Turkey’s government are well-founded. Prime Minister
Erdogan was once a member of the Welfare Party, which Soner Cagaptay
of the Washington Institute for Near East Policy describes as the
“motherboard of Turkish Islamists.” When his Justice and Development
Party won in 2002, the Muslim Brotherhood praised them for the
“exposing of the failure of the secular trend.” Under Erdogan’s
leadership, Turkey has taken a confrontational stance towards Israel.

It has held joint military exercises with Syria, and the President
and Prime Minister have personally met with Moqtada al-Sadr, the
Iranian-backed Iraqi militia leader that waged war on Coalition
and Iraqi forces. Prime Minister Erdogan opposed the International
Criminal Court’s indictment of Sudanese President Omar Bashir because
“no Muslim could perpetrate a genocide.”

ObamaYoMoma 80p · 9 hours ago CAN says they wanted to use a flag with
Islamic symbols to emphasize the connection between radical Islam’s
goal of promoting Sharia-based governance and the Ground Zero mosque.

So according to Ryan Mauro, only radical Islam’s goal as opposed to
mainstream Islam’s goal is to promote Sharia-based governance and
the Ground Zero mosque, even though the jihad ideology, the Islamic
imperative to subjugate the world via the imposition of Sharia,
couldn’t be more mainstream within Islam as it is taught and advocated
by all sects within Islam and by all schools of Islamic jurisprudence
in both Shi’a and Sunni Islam. Hence, Ryan Mauro and Barack Obama
are in lock step and see eye to eye where Islam is concerned, as they
both believe in the political correct myth that Islam is a Religion
of Peace~Y being hijacked by a tiny minority of extremists who are
trying to warp and twist one of the world’s great religions. I,
on the other hand, along with many other people as well understand
that mainstream Islam is a theo-political totalitarian ideology that
seeks to subjugate the world via the imposition of Sharia as its main
goal and only poses as being a religion to infiltrate the countries
it intends to subjugate and subsume. Reply

PhillipGaley · 4 hours ago And, . . . a principal reason for this
lock-step, the world round, between those mentioned and those groups
who use Islamist related insignia such as the crescent moon and
star, or the fez, as do The Ancient Arabic Order of the Nobles of
the Mystic Shrine, commonly called, the Shriners-and having at least
something to do with why some of the basic impulses of Islam finds
support in non-Moslem societies-such as Nazi Germany-has to do with
concentrations of power, as attractive to individuals for sense of
providence in daily necessities.

But the one of commonality in totalitarian or primitive society
which here, I wish to point to, has to do with-so coarsely as it doth
appear-the way men get women-which, more or less as a group effort, is
the way in which those of that persuasion-Moslem or other totalitarian
sort look at the thing-it’s a project.

Because, the backward and controlling bureaucratic part of their
societies don’t understand women-but generally, also, even in advanced
societies men don’t understand women all that well-at the very least,
not so well as women understand men-and in many places in media,
providing thus some comic confusion-and thought allowable partly,
under various forms of naive predication which suppose such as:
“Well, [than I] nobody else, understands them any better; so, . . .”;
neither by aptitude, nor apprehending nor, but little caring for the
attention to detail and the regard which, to successful courtship is
requisite, in such a state, the men those groups derive and implement
other forceful means: And, I do so wish that, I could remember where,
reading of the Islamist advertisement which sought virgins to satisfy
a group of warriors-only, as their duty to the war effort. And yeah,
why spend all that darned time dominating a woman intellectually and
emotionally, when a faster means makes sense? Except, bureaucratic
types are not at all, the archetype of champion to be honored in the
female psyche; so, . . .

However, when once they have the women, as is often reported of police
brutality in their own homes, here as easily as there, those women
are thus put to suffer violence from a crude man; so, . . . Reply

BAKU: CIS And Russia Interested In Resolving The Armenian-Azerbaijan

CIS AND RUSSIA INTERESTED IN RESOLVING THE ARMENIAN-AZERBAIJANI NAGORNO-KARABAKH CONFLICT?

Today

Nov 9 2010
Azerbaijan

CIS and Russia are interested in resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani
Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and are making efforts in this regard,
said CIS Executive Secretary Sergei Lebedev.

“CIS and Russia are interested in solving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict
and we go step by step in the issue of rapprochement between the two
countries,” Lebedev told reporters in Baku.

“Recently, in Astrakhan, the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan
under the mediation of the President of the Russian Federation have
agreed to exchange dead bodies of servicemen, and it almost became
the first steps for rapprochement of positions. These are small steps,
but at the same time, we are discussing the liberation of the occupied
territories, creating a corridor between Azerbaijan and Nakhichivan,
Karabakh and Armenia,” he said.

Astrakhan hosted the trilateral meeting of the presidents of
Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia – Ilham Aliyev, Dmitry Medvedev and
Serzh Sargsyan Oct.27. The parties have signed a declaration, which
envisaged the return of prisoners of war and takes a humanitarian
nature with the mediation of the International Committee of the Red
Cross and the OSCE Minsk Group.

Armenia transferred bodies of Azerbaijani servicemen Mubariz Ibrahimov
and Farid Ahmadov to the Azerbaijani side on Saturday.

Earlier, Azerbaijan transferred to Armenia the body of Manvel
Saribekyan, who earlier committed suicide, while Armenia liberated
Azerbaijani citizen Eldar Tagiyev from captivity.

According to Lebedev, Armenia and Azerbaijan are brotherly countries
for Russia.

According to him, everything possible is done for the rapprochement
of these countries, because neither Armenia nor Azerbaijan will move
to somewhere else. “It’s their God-given land and they are doomed
to live together. Therefore, Russia will make every effort for their
rapprochement as a co-chair of OSCE Minsk Group, and as their partner
in the CIS, and as a neighboring country,” said Lebedev.
