IN MEMORIAM: SONIA BOGOSIAN, 88, DIRECTOR OF NURSING AND ARMENIAN ACTIVIST
Sonia Bogosian.

Tuesday November 23, 2010

Paramus, N.J. – Sonia Esther Bogosian passed away on October 20 in
New Jersey.

Born in Aleppo, Syria on January 7, 1922 to parents Dr. Khatchig and
Astrid Boghossian, Sonia was a strong and independent woman from a very
young age. Her pioneering spirit, which led her to advance herself
in a society where women were not usually given the opportunity to
pursue education, no less a career, Sonia left Aleppo to go to Beirut,
Lebanon and enrolled herself at The American University of Beirut
Nursing School from where she received her R.N.

degree.

In 1956, after earning her nursing degree, she followed her brother
Edward, founder and editor of The Armenian Reporter, to America,
enrolling in Columbia University in New York City to earn a Masters
degree in nursing.

In her chosen profession of nursing, compassion for others was her
daily occupation. She was Director of Nursing at Flower and Fifth
Avenue Hospital for several years, and later went on to be Director of
Nursing at Dewitt Nursing Home in New York City for over thirty years.

At the same time, she pursued an active life in the Armenian community,
becoming a pillar of the AGBU and the Diocese, and lending her strong
support to the Armenian Assembly, the Armenian Tree Project, Church
and countless charitable and cultural endeavors. She had a special
place in her heart for the Arts and was a prominent figure in the
Armenian community.

After the 1988 earthquake in Armenia, Sonia took a hiatus from her
job and went to her homeland to work as a nurse at a hospital in the
earthquake zone for over three months. Her compassion and patriotism
drove her to leave the comforts of her life in America to assist her
people at a time where they needed it most.

Sonia traveled every corner of the world, and was an extremely
cultured woman.

Although she never married, she had a large extended family that
adored her and she became a second mother to all of her nieces,
nephew, as well as her grandnieces and nephew, and great-grandnieces
and nephews. She was truly the matriarch of the Boghossian family.

Sonia is survived by her sister Fimi Schulze, sister-in-law Arlene
Boghossian, nieces Astrid Bogosian, Sonia-Monique Decker, Sonia
Kesaian, Sylvie Schulze, Sylva Boghossian, nephew Ernest Schulze,
great grand-nieces Lara Sanders, Louisa Willet, Deana Atenian,
Seda-Marie Kesaian, and great grand-nephews Campell and Ariso. Her
brothers Garbis Bogosian and Edward K. Boghossian predeceased her.

The family is requesting that donations in her memory be made to either
the Armenian-American Wellness Center or The Armenian Tree Project.

Armenian Community Commemorates 90th Anniversary Of President Wilson

ARMENIAN COMMUNITY COMMEMORATES 90TH ANNIVERSARY OF PRESIDENT WILSON’S ARBITRAL AWARD

by Asbarez
Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010
GLENDALE, Calif.

Event Speakers Call on United States to Recognize and Apply Official
Borders

Hundreds packed the Glendale Central Library auditorium Sunday
to commemorate the 90th anniversary of President Woodrow Wilson’s
arbitral award on the Turkey-Armenia border. The event was organized
by the Defense Council of Western Armenia (DCWA).

Among those in attendance were Glendale Unified School District
Chairman Greg Krikorian, California State Assembly Member Anthony
Portantino and 32nd District U.S. House Representative Congresswoman
Judy Chu.

Arick Gevorkian, the event’s master of ceremonies, welcomed the
audience and thanked them for supporting the mission of the DCWA
and congratulated its members and leaders for having the vision and
follow through to raise awareness for and pursue the realization of
Wilsonian Armenia throughout the last five years.

In his remarks, Greg Krikorian announced his plans to join forces
with the Western Armenian Heritage Foundation in erecting a statue of
President Woodrow Wilson at the Wilson Middle School in Glendale. This
announcement was followed by yet another significant message delivered
by Congresswoman Judy Chu.

“These were lands that were part of historical Armenia for decades
if not centuries. They connected this now land locked country to the
Black Sea and were a hub of maritime trade,” said Rep. Chu. “These
four provinces had significant Armenian populations and thrived before
the Genocide forced inhabitants from their homes and their homeland.”

“While 90 years have passed since President Woodrow Wilson and the
international community agreed that these lands would be part of an
independent Armenia, this has still not happened. And that is wrong,”
she added.

Keynote speaker, Krikor Soukiasian, gave a detailed overview of
the events leading up to the signing of the Treaty of Sevres. DCWA
President, Michael Sosikian, addressed the audience with a concise
presentation about the current applicability and legality of President
Woodrow Wilson’s arbitral award as it pertains to international law.

“The message and goals of the DCWA have resonated in media outlets
from Armenia to Los Angeles over the last several years. Our people
have a clear understanding that the current border between Armenia and
Turkey is simply illegitimate per international law. We must continue
our work and grow the voices of righteousness and justice until we
have the just opportunity to return to our homeland as determined by
President Woodrow Wilson’s arbitral award,” said Sosikian, prior to
addressing the audience. “Locally, we look forward to working on the
Woodrow Wilson statue project with Greg Krikorian and the Glendale
School District Board.”

Referencing the recent reparations conference at UCLA, guest speaker
Donald Wilson Bush, a direct decent of President Woodrow Wilson, said
that work towards the realization of Wilsonian Armenia is steadily
growing. Pointing to the map of Wilsonian Armenia he commended the
work of the DCWA and promised to continue his efforts in that respect
as well.

The commemorative evening also featured a few talented artists of
the Armenian community, including violinist Alen Aghadzhanian, a
recitation by Andranik Soghomonian and filmaker Armen Ohannesian’s
short documentary about his recent visit to Western Armenia. The
evening concluded with a performance by the Hamazkayin “Sayat Nova”
Choir, led by Nora Roumian-Bairamian.

Baku Again Speaks Of "Unconquerable" Azerbaijani Army, Which Will Re

BAKU AGAIN SPEAKS OF “UNCONQUERABLE” AZERBAIJANI ARMY, WHICH WILL REACH YEREVAN
Karine Ter-Sahakyan / PanARMENIAN News

PanARMENIAN.Net
November 23, 2010

Azerbaijani political analysts have never exerted efforts to bring
their thoughts in compliance with logic.

As anticipated, on the threshold of the OSCE summit in Astana,
Baku again started speaking the language of threats and ultimatums,
making statements about “unconquerable” Azerbaijani army, which will
reach Yerevan, and using the superiority of its military budget.

According to Mubariz Ahmedoglu, a main mouthpiece of Aliyev’s
propaganda, Azerbaijan is entirely ready for a war.

“Our army is much stronger than the Armenian one, irrespective of its
state, and our single enemy is Armenia. The OSCE summit in Astana
will be a critical point, barrier, after which a new field for an
Azerbaijani maneuver will open. Azerbaijan’s choice depends on a
decision of the OSCE summit in Astana. However, the recent steps of
Yerevan suggest that Armenia chooses a war, it means that Azerbaijan
will wage a final and victorious war,” said Ahmedoglu. In other words,
if Armenia is labeled as an aggressor and occupant in Astana, it will
accept it and yield its lands to Baku no one knows for what.

The political analyst went on telling tales about poverty-stricken
Armenia, which needs only a war to survive. Moreover, he resorts to
insults without hesitation and further ado. For example, he stated
that military maneuvers are held… to feed soldiers. One could not
think of greater absurdity. However, Azerbaijani political analysts
have never exerted efforts to bring their thoughts in compliance with
logic, what has resulted in permanent aggravation of the situation
and hysteria, as well as a new generation, which is ready to fight
for petrodollars of Aliyevs’ clan.

“It is true that none of Armenian leaders will be able to
substantiate for the Armenian history the return of territories
occupied in a military way, thus, Armenia has no other way, but
for war with Azerbaijan. Armenians are deprived of high culture
and logic to conceive the necessity of living in compliance with
civil and international laws excluding aggression and occupation of
another’s land. Due to this very logic, being defeated in a new war,
the Armenian society will calm down and accept the new reality,”
the political analyst said.

Thus, according to the logic of Ahmedoglu, Azerbaijan, which lost the
first war in Karabakh, has not accepted the new reality and aspires
towards revenge. And the most important thing is that all that is
voiced in Baku reflects the real situation in Azerbaijan, which has
done nothing to improve the living conditions of people in flooded
regions, who have neither shelters nor means of subsistence. However,
Aliyev does not care for it – he needs only intensification of
hysteria prior to Astana and the world community’s carte blanche,
which will nobody give to it. And various statements made by court
political analysts are dictated by it. However, as there are not other
political analysts in Baku, one can say that they gain their bread
by anti-Armenian propaganda, what is an easy thing, as one does not
need to feel cold in trenches or run under fire.

The Only Way To Create A Prosperous And Secure Future For The Republ

THE ONLY WAY TO CREATE A PROSPEROUS AND SECURE FUTURE FOR THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA
BY ARA PAPIAN

Asbarez
Monday, November 22nd, 2010

The time has come that Armenia, anointed with the blood of her scions,
demand reparations for the suffering and misfortune she has borne
throughout the course of her history, become the master of her own
destiny.

– Nikoghayos Adonts, 1919. Armenian historian (1871-1942)

Almost a century after these words were published in an epigraph, the
ship of the fate of the Armenian people has not yet cast its anchors
in the port of reparations. At the cost of the collective efforts
of us all, centuries’ worth of sacrifice and decades of staunch
struggles, the ship of our fate approached the edge of reparations
for a short time ninety years ago; it appeared, just for a moment,
that the haven of reparations was within reach. But the political
winds suddenly switched direction at the last second and hurled us
towards the conspiratorial Kemalist-Bolshevik whirlpool.

And, to this day, the ship of our fate is being knocked about in
the tempestuous political sea. It is a sea with innumerable visible
and hidden reefs, a sea teeming with pirates, a sea where our ship is
wandering aimlessly, because the captain, instead of navigating towards
a blessed asylum, is trying to come to terms with those very pirates
by legitimizing their loot: an absolutely wrong and short-sighted act.

There are decisive eras in the lives of peoples, when the entire
future of that people is set on its course. We Armenians are currently
at such a stage. The unfortunate pair of Armenia-Turkey protocols
have upset the social and political life of all Armenians, they have
sharpened the memory of national dispossession, and consolidated the
desire to form a pan-national opposition against them. We are at a
decisive state today, as the protocols are simply unacceptable. They
are unacceptable from the point of view of the supreme and lasting
interests of our people. The past of a people, the security of a
nation, and the future of a state must not be sacrificed for the sake
of temporary or factional interests.

Ninety years ago, around this very time – on the 22nd of November,1920
– the President of the United States, Woodrow Wilson, declared
his arbitral award. The Wilsonian Arbitral Award, as I have had the
opportunity to discuss, is the gospel of our rights, the basis of our
demands, and the only way to create a prosperous and secure future
for the Republic of Armenia.

Let me very briefly turn to that extremely important document and
point out just a few main clauses. Since the arbitral award was
declared on the basis of the compromise of the Allied Powers at San
Remo on the 26th of April, 1920, as well as in the Treaty of Sèvres
(of the 10th of August, 1920), being enforced upon signing, that is,
since the 22nd of November, 1920, therefore this award is a binding,
inviolable and perpetual decision for all the Allied Powers of the
First World War (which comprise more than a hundred countries today)
and for all the states party to the Treaty of Sèvres (currently over
twenty countries). It is also binding, inviolable and perpetual for the
United States of America, as the arbitral award bears the Great Seal
of the United States, signed by the US President and co-signed by the
Secretary of State. In accordance with the prior written directive,
the Wilsonian Arbitral Award is binding for the defeated countries
of the First World War as well.

As per the basic principles of international law, which are codified
in the documents of the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907, the
realization of the arbitral award is the non-negotiable obligation and
imperative duty of the parties to that document, that is, of all the
countries signatory to the compromise. And so, our pan-national quest
must be to demand of those countries on each 22nd of November to bear
the responsibility of their obligation which stems from international
law, and to do so not as some favor, but as a forgotten, partly denied,
but nevertheless irrefutable and inviolable international obligation.

It has been a few decades now that the 24th of April is marked as an
important date on the Armenian calendar, a day which showcases perhaps
the greatest manifestation of united Armenian political will. That day
was initially a day of requiems, of a holy remembrance for the Armenian
people, but then gradually grew to become a day of commemoration and of
demanding the recognition of the Armenian Genocide. Regardless, that is
a day of loss, or, at the most, a day of recognizing the dispossession.

As a nation, however, and as a community in pursuit of justice, we
are in need of a day of victory and reparation, of the realization of
justice and the establishment of our rights. We do have such a day:
the 22nd of November maintains that inexhaustible fire of triumph,
the day the arbitral award by the US President Woodrow Wilson deciding
the border between Armenia and Turkey was declared. By the arbitral
award, the Republic of Armenia got to include a part of our patrimony,
the north-eastern part. That day, a ruling was made on the basis
of international law and enforced once and for all, mandatory to
be carried out, legally inviolable and perpetual in terms of the
existence of our rights.

The 22nd of November must become a day of restoration of violated
justice, of national demands, and of the re-establishment of the
rights that have been taken away from us; in a word, a Day of National
Stewardship – Hayrenatiroutiun.

I call upon us all to appropriately mark such a day on the 22nd of
November each year – with rallies, marches, pickets, conferences,
publications, speeches – as it is only through National Stewardship,
through Hayrenatiroutiun, that we shall be able to build tomorrow’s
Armenia.

Ara Papian is the head of the Modus Vivendi Center.

Archbishop Barkev Martirosyan on the People of Artsakh and Armenia
Fund’s Impact on their Daily Lives

HOLLYWOOD-In an exclusive Horizon TV interview, Archbishop Barkev
Martirosyan, the Prelate of the Diocese of Artsakh, speaks to Manouk
Seraydarian about faith, hope and survival in the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic and the transformative impact of Armenia Fund’s programs
in Artsakh.

The Archbishop visited Horizon late last week while in Glendale,
California for the 13th annual Armenia Fund Telethon scheduled
to air live on Thanksgiving Thursday. More information about the
telethon here.

Archbishop Martirosyan has traveled to California year after year
to participate in the event, appearing on TV to appeal to Armenians
around the world to support the development of the Republics of Armenia
and Nagorno-Karabakh.This Thanksgiving he will once again take to the
airwaves during the telethon, this time to raise awareness of the fact
that more than 70,000 people in Artsakh are deprived of clean water.

During his interview on Horizon, Archbishop Martirosyan spoke of
Armenia Fund’s role in Nagorno-Karabakh and its positive impact on
the people of the land. But he also discussed many of the problems
still facing the nascent republic.

He described the 21st century as an era of victory for the Armenian
people. But that the victory, he noted, is incomplete when the
average villager in Artsakh, who fought to liberate his homeland,
lacks access to life’s most basic necessity.

He said that while the Armenian people are proud of their victory in
Karabakh, its villagers, who live on the land, still suffer serious
problems and lack the infrastructure to develop their land.

Archbishop Martirosian is an inspirational figure in Artsakh,
most well known for giving religious and moral guidance to Armenian
soldiers during the war of liberation. After the war, he took to the
TV during annual telethons to help raise money for the redevelopment of
war-torn areas in Artsakh. In the late 90s, he passionately called upon
Armenians to unite and finance the building of the vital North-South
Highway connecting Armenia and Karabakh.
