As April 24 looms, Sarksyan asks Obama to use the g-word

02 April 2011, Saturday / TODAY’S ZAMAN, ANKARA

Armenian President Serzh Sarksyan has disclosed that he has asked US
President Barack Obama to use the term genocide to describe the
killings of Anatolian Armenians during World War I ahead of `Armenian
Genocide Remembrance Day.’

`Naturally, our desire has always been and is that in his annual
address the president of the United States makes a very explicit
evaluation and utters the word genocide,’ Sarksyan was quoted as
saying in online English-language Armenian news reports on Friday, as
he expressed hope that Obama would use the politically sensitive term
in his next public statement on the anniversary of the killings to be
marked on April 24.

His remarks came on Thursday said at a joint news conference with
visiting Swiss President Micheline Calmy-Rey. `I have spoken out on
more than one occasion and can now say that in the past I have
personally asked the US president to utter that word,’ he said.

Speaking to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty (RFE/RL), however,
Sarksyan indicated on Friday that he thinks Obama may once more stop
short of calling the killings genocide in his upcoming address.

`The best moment is when your desire matches reality. Let’s hope that
this will be the case this time. But if this doesn’t happen, we should
not have reason to be upset and must instead fight for that,’ he said
in response to a question from RFE/RL.

Armenians say up to 1.5 million Armenians were either sent to their
deaths or slaughtered in eastern Anatolia at the hands of Ottoman
Turks in 1915, an accusation that Turkey vehemently rejects. Turkey
says both sides suffered tragic losses in a state of war during World
War I.

In Paris, a bill proposing a punishment for anyone who denies the
Armenian genocide returned to the agenda again.

The French Parliament recognized the so-called Armenian genocide in
2001, which resulted in short-lived tension between France and Turkey.
In 2006 the French National Assembly adopted a bill proposing a
punishment for anyone who denies the Armenian genocide. However, it
has to be passed by the Senate in order to be enforced.

As a result of efforts by a group of Socialists, the bill will be
debated at the Senate’s plenary session on May 4, the Anatolia news
agency reported on Thursday.

Turkey caused ‘Armenian genocide’: Argentine judge

Buenos Aires: An Argentine judge says “the Turkish state committed the
crime of genocide against the Armenian people” between 1915 and 1923.

The ruling on Friday also says Turkey should help an Armenian
descendant living in Argentina learn the fate of more than 50 of his
relatives who disappeared nearly a century ago.

Many international experts say the killing of up to 1.5 million
Armenians by Ottoman Turks around the time of World War I was
genocide. Turkey maintains that far fewer died and due to civil war
and unrest, rather than genocide.

The Turkish embassy in Buenos Aires has not immediately responded to a
request for comment.

Judge Norberto Oyarbide says his ruling is “declarative” only, with no
value other than the truth.

Four ARS Members Were Presented Mesrob Mashdots Medals

Four ARS Members Were Presented Mesrob Mashdots Medals

asbarez
Friday, April 1st, 2011

The recipients after the presentation

GLENDALE – Haigoush Kohler, Knar Manjikian, Anahid Meymarian, and Dr.
Rita Vorperian were bestowed with the prestigious Mesrob Mashdots
medal and encyclical by Western Prelate Archbishop Moushegh
Mardirossian on behalf of His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Holy
See of Cilicia, during a reception held at Armenian Relief Society of
Western U.S.A. regional headquarters on March 25.

Dozens of ARS members had gathered to witness the event, particularly
from the `Anahid,’ `Sepan’ and `Zovinar’ chapters, where the honorees
had been members for decades. The audience included a former recipient
of the same honors, Dr. Roubina Peroomian.

The Mesrob Mashdots medal
Back on October 3, during the Asbarez-Horizon annual banquet, while a
large contingent of ARS members had left for ARS Centennial
commemorations in Der Zor, Armenia and Artsakh, the honorees were
bestowed upon with the honor of being Mesrob Mashdots medal
recipients, as authors-writers for Manjikian, Meymarian and Vorperian,
and as a supporter of publications for Kohler. At the time, Hasmig
Tashjian, posthumously received the same honors, but the original
encyclicals and medals had not arrived from Antelias, Lebanon from His
Holiness Aram I.

This reception became an opportunity to allow those ARS members, who
were taking part in the ARS Centennial pilgrimage at the time, to
witness the four ARS members receive the honors.

Arousyak Melkonian, ARS-WUSA Regional Executive Chair, welcomed and
thanked everyone and noted the importance of the occasion, introducing
recipient as jewels, who are shining examples with their literary
accomplishments and dedication to community service.

On behalf of the Asbarez-Horizon family, Editor Apo Boghigian, who was
instrumental in securing the medals with his colleagues Asbarez
English Editor Ara Khachatourian and Horizon TV General Manager Harry
Vorperian, spoke about the joyous occasion. He used a quote by George
Orwell about all are equal, but some are more equal than others, to
illustrate how each of the gathered ARS members may be worthy of
praise, but the four ARSers `were more equal than others’.

Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian quoted an Armenian saying `Oosh lini,
anoush lini’ (let it be late, but let it be sweet) and hoped that all
those who are worthy of such honors are eventually bestowed with
whatever honors they deserve, adding that sometimes the worthy are not
ignored, but are failed to be noticed in our hectic life-styles. The
Prelate congratulated all the honorees, and explained that the medal
packet includes a smaller pin, which can be worn to signify that the
wearer is a `Mesrob Mashdots’ medal recipient.

The Prelate was joined with Vicky Marashlian, Chair of the ARS Central
Executive; Rima Vorperian, Chair of the Western Prelacy Executive
Council; as well as Melkonian, the Asbarez-Horizon team consisting of
Boghigian, Khachatourian and Vorperian (Harry followed his mother, Dr.
Rita, into service). Manjikian took home a second `Mesrob Mashdotz’
medal, since her husband, Hagop, is an earlier recipient. Kohler was
surrounded with her `Zovinar’ Chapter and ARS Javakhk Fund committee
members. ARS `Anahid’ Chapter members surrounded Meymarian, who was
flanked by her sculptor husband Puzant. Jasik Jarahian, General
Manager of ARS-WUSA regional headquarters, who was Dr. Vorperian’s
co-worker at the ARS headquarters for 16 year, sponsored the reception
in her honor, as a gesture of appreciation for her life-long
dedication to the ARS.

A very joyous and friendly atmosphere existed. Each of the recipients
were very appreciative of the honors, and shared their thoughts and
joy with the audience.

Manjikian thanked His Holiness Aram I for declaring the year 2010 `the
Year of the Woman’ and bestowing the honors, and the Asbarez for
coming up with the idea of honoring women. Vorperian, who is still
recovering from surgery, told the ARS members that she fondly missed
them, recognized them for their hard work, and noted that even though
honors are not expected, recipients feel happy when they receive them.
Meymarian likened life as a journey, as you walk on the path, and do
your human duty, awards are like flowers that bloom on the way. She
noted that duty, honor and spiritual values are not old slogans, but
values that should be embraced by the new generations. Kohler said
that she was very much surprised, but will cherish the honors that
make her so proud and determined to display her medal, so that others
can appreciate it as well.

Archbishop Mardirossian blessed the tables, and the audience mingled
with the honorees, snapping photographs. For many of the ARS members,
the memorable reception and the chance to meet old friends was a well
deserved respite from their hectic lives. Kohler, Manjikian, Meymarian
and Verperian are truly role models, who have demonstrated with their
life-long service the true meaning of dedication to literary endeavors
to keep our culture and history alive for generations to come.

Witness in Dink case claims phone recordings were erased

Witness in Dink case claims phone recordings were erased

13:48 – 02.04.11

A chief police inspector has claimed that phone recordings of Yasin
Hayal, a suspect in the 2007 assassination of Hrant Dink, were erased
by the Ankara Police, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

The statement by the inspector, a witness in the case, comes following
a request to have alleged gunman Ogun Samast’s father heard as a
witness in order to explain his son’s relationship with a `gendarmerie
commander’ that he mentioned before.

Critics of how the case is being pursued say the state is continuing
to drag its feet on broadening the investigation despite the new
allegations.

The Ankara chief prosecutor received testimonies from former Trabzon
Police Directorate authorities, including former Deputy Police Chief
Emin Aslan and Chief Police Inspector Levent Yarimel, who were asked
to be tried on accusations of neglect of duty in Dink’s murder.

Yarimel, who testified to the Prosecutor’s Office in Trabzon regarding
the murder case, claimed phone recordings of suspect Hayal had been
erased by the Intelligence Unit of the Police Directorate in Ankara.

He also said the Intelligence Unit’s official report saying there had
not been any investigation conducted regarding the telephone owned by
Hayal did not reflect the truth.

According to Yarimel, erasing the phone recordings might have been
done when investigations started into the inspectors regarding Dink’s
murder. He claimed that something like that could not have been done
without the order of the police chiefs in the Intelligence Unit of the
Police Directorate.

The Trabzon Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had accepted a request in
February for some police officers to be questioned within the scope of
the murder investigation.

Dink, a Turkish journalist of Armenian descent, was killed 19 January
2007 in Istanbul.

Former Trabzon Police Chief Resat Altay and his deputy Yarimel are
among the officers facing questioning in connection with the case. The
officers are among public officials suspected by the family’s lawyers
of neglecting their duty or knowingly not taking action to prevent the
murder.
