Freeway signs in Montebello take note of Armenian genocide

The signs next to the Pomona Freeway direct motorists to the Armenian
Genocide Martyrs Monument, which draws thousands of Armenians each
April 24 to commemorate the 1915 massacre. Armenians say a freeway
marker could lead to wider acknowledgement of the deaths of 1.5
million.

At an emotional ceremony, Archbishop Moushegh Mardirossian of the
Armenian Apostolic Church blesses a new sign along the 60 Freeway.

It’s only a sign.

But the large green message board unveiled next to the Pomona Freeway
packed an emotional punch for those gathered Friday in Montebello.

“Armenian Genocide Martyrs Monument Next Exit,” it reads.

A pair of the directional signs, authorized by the state Legislature,
point the way to a memorial tower above Garfield Avenue that
commemorates the attempt a century ago to eliminate Armenians from the
Ottoman Empire.

People of Armenian descent from throughout Los Angeles gathered
beneath the tower to thank state officials for recognizing their
history – and for perhaps leading the way to what they hope is wider
acknowledgement of the massacre of 1.5 million people.

Leaders of modern-day Turkey dispute the “genocide” label. The United
States, worried about U.S.-Turkish relations, has not taken a formal
position on the subject.

The directional signs will likely send “shockwaves” through those who
fail to recognize the impact that the killings and deportations still
have on Armenians around the world, said Grigor Hovhannisyan,
Armenia’s consul general.

“This is an international event that will be heard around the world,”
agreed Levon Kirakosian, a Glendale lawyer who helped organize the
ceremony.

“These words are now nailed on the wall for all to see.”

Legislation authorizing the signs was authored by state Assemblyman
Charles Calderon (D-Whittier), who recalled growing up in Montebello
and being influenced by his boyhood best friend’s Armenian
grandmother.

“This is not just another freeway sign,” Calderon told the crowd of about 200.

The six-legged memorial tower, dedicated in 1968, draws thousands of
Armenians each April 24 to commemorate the 1915 massacre. Calderon
described the tower as “a beacon that stands in the night” for human
rights.

Although there are few living survivors of the massacre – ceremony
organizers say one of them, Montebello resident Hrant Zeitounzian, was
100 when he died Wednesday – Los Angeles-area Armenians labor to keep
their history alive among younger generations.

“We’re here today because of the hard work of our grandparents and
great-grandparents,” said Kevork Tutunjian, a 25-year-old writer from
Glendale. “I’ll make sure this monument resonates with my
great-grandkids.”

Garabed Armoudikian, 61, a Pasadena service station operator, held
Armenian and American flags as he watched the ceremony. He predicted
that the display will prompt discussion among those who travel the
Pomona Freeway and who may be unaware of Armenian history.

And that’s a good sign, Armoudikian said.

No tours to Egypt from Armenia

April 02, 2011 | 03:33

The information that Armenian tour operators resume sale of tour
packages to Egypt on April 2, is not true, representatives of a number
of travel agencies informed Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Armenian tourists are forced to restrain their burning desire to
travel to Egypt, as charter flights to the country are yet
unavailable.

Many countries have announced travel warning for Egypt due to the
country’s unprecedented unrest in January 2011.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported earlier, a wave of unrest swept into
Egypt since January. The situation got strained after fights broke out
between supporters and opponents of Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak. A
furious wave of protest swept Egypt’s President Hosni Mubarak from
power on Friday after 30 years of one-man rule. Over 300 people were
killed, 5.000 injured in unprecedented countrywide protests in the
country.

Armenia got into bondage of Madrid Principles, NKR former minister says

April 02, 2011 | 00:28

It is obvious that Nagorno-Karabakh Republic has political, economic
and moral dependence on Armenia, NKR former Foreign Minister Arman
Melikyan told Armenian News-NEWS.am.

Commenting on the reduced role of Nagorno-Karabakh in terms of
expressing its stance in the negotiation process within the recent
years, Melikyan said that it is natural, because Madrid principles
were not accepted by Armenia several years ago.

`They did not exist and Karabakh had more opportunities to speak out.
Armenia accepted the Madrid principles and got into a bondage. The
only thing that Stepanakert says from time to time is that it has no
relation to the adoption and discussion of principles. That’s all,’
Melikyan noted.

According to the former minister, Karabakh people and government may
oppose the actions of Armenia only in a very extreme situation: `In
fact, today Karabakh’s political will is not displayed in everyday
life,’ he said.

Airport in Khankendi illegal – UN resident-coordinator
Sat 02 April 2011 07:19 GMT | 10:19 Local Time

‘If United Nation’s relevant agency has not passed decision to open
airport in Khankendi and implement flights there, it is illegal’.
The statement came from UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Fikret Akcura.

Resident Coordinator reminded the UN’s agency on each sphere and noted
that UN’s International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) operated on
air transport sphere:

‘UN’s this agency must pass a decision related to newly-opened air
corridor. I don’t know the agency had made statement on this issue or
not. This step is not allowed without their permission. If it has not
been allowed, so, it is illegal’.

Akcura also said ‘Nagorno Karabakh is a very important issue for Azerbaijan’.

The resident coordinator said the new resolutions of the UN were being
implemented, while the resolutions on Nagorno Karabakh had not been
implemented yet.

‘Azerbaijan, European institutions must be more active so that they
are implemented. One million refugees, internally displaced persons
are in hard conditions. People have been displaced from their homes
for 20 years. A solution must be found for them,’ he said.

The implementation of Resolution 1937 adopted by the UN Security
Council regarding Libya on March 17 this year started immediately. The
Security Council’s four resolutions demanding Armenians’ withdrawal
from the occupied Azerbaijani territories have not been implemented
for 20 years.

UN urges international community to fulfilling resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh
02.04.2011 12:24 Azerbaijan, Baku, April 2 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

The UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Fikret Akcura urged the
international community to intensify efforts to fulfill four UN
resolutions on Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, which have
remained unfulfilled.

“We see some decisions taken by the UN still remain unfulfilled. More
than a million refugees and IDPs have been living away from their
homes for already 20 years, and that should be addressed,” Akcura told
journalists on Saturday.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988
when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian
armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992,
including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and 7 surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The
co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group – Russia, France, and the U.S. – are
currently holding the peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council’s four
resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the
surrounding regions.

UN to decide on new air corridor between Armenia and Karabakh

April 02, 2011 | 11:58

The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) must make a
decision on opening of a new corridor to carry out flights between
Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan
Fikret Akcura told journalists on Saturday.

`It is impossible to carry out such flights without their permission,’
Trend news agency quotes Akcura.

Stepanakert’s airport will start its operation from May 9, 2011.
Azerbaijan has recently threatened to shoot down aircrafts flying to
Nagorno-Karabakh.

On March 21, the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)
handed Armenian General Department of Civil Aviation a letter from
head of the Azerbaijani aviation department which says Baku is ready
to crash planes flying to Karabakh if authorities open Stepanakert
airport.

Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan said he intends to be the first
passenger of the first flight. Talking to the jounrlists on March 31
people of Nagorno-Karabakh has a right to use air transport. Sargsyan
noted Armenia and NKR should spare no effort to reach accord on the
issue with international agencies.

UN: Opening new corridor for flights between Armenia and
Nagorno-Karabakh impossible without ICAO’s decision

Opening a new corridor to carry out flights between Armenia and
Nagorno-Karabakh (Azerbaijan’s occupied region) is impossible without
the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) decision, UN
Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Fikret Akcura believes.

“It is impossible to carry out such flights without their permission,”
Akcura told journalists on Saturday.

Armenia plans to open the airport in Khankendi in May. Armenian
President said on Thursday that he will be the first passenger of an
aircraft, which will depart from Khankendi.

Armenia has no right to operate the airport in Khankendi, built in the
Azerbaijani occupied territories. This contradicts all international
conventions and will not be allowed by any international
organizations, including an influential organization such as the
International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), AZAL spokesman
Maharram Safarli said earlier.

It is necessary to obtain relevant documents and approval from the
ICAO to operate the airport.
Azerbaijan has informed the organization about inadmissibility of
carrying out flights from this airport.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988

Azerbaijanis lay black wreath at monument to Armenian-Turkish friendship

April 02, 2011 | 12:02

Representatives of Azerbaijani NGOs held a protest action on Friday
near the monument to Armenian-Turkish friendship in the city of Kars,
Turkey.

The protest was initiated by Azerbaijani International Diaspora
Center, 1news.az website reports referring to Turkish media.

Head of the center Ismail Agayev said `such an ugly monument’ must not
stand in the territory of Turkey. Protestors also laid a black wreath
at the monument.

As Armenian News-NEWS.am reported previously, City Council of Kars
decided by a majority vote to demolish the monument dedicated to the
Armenian-Turkish friendship, branded by Turkish Prime Minister Recep
Tayyip Erdogan as `monstrous’.

The monument was built on the initiative of former Kars mayor Naif Alibeyoglu.

Alibeyoglu once said the decision on removing the monument was made at
the Azeri President Ilham Aliyev’s request. `Turkey has an oil and gas
dependence on Azerbaijan. This is the only reason for demolition,’ he
emphasized.

168 Zham: Resignation of two ministers discussed

April 02, 2011

Rumor about resignation of two ministers have recently gone about,
Armenian `168 Zham’ newspaper writes. According to the newspaper,
possibility to dismiss Diaspora Minister Hranush Hakobyan and Culture
Minister Hasmik Poghosyan is being discussed. `According to various
sources, Heghine Bisharyan from Orinats Yerkir Party (Rule of Law)
will be appointed minister of culture, while Republican MP Karine
Achemyan will replace Hranush Hakobyan,’ the newspaper writes.

`Possible resignation of chief of Armenian Police Alik Sargsyan is
discussed as well. It is hard to say what the purpose of these changes
is. As a result society’s attitude towards authorities will hardly
change. Most likely the authorities are just trying to divert public
attention from real problems,’ the newspaper says.
