Community Asks Obama To Lay Wreath At Montebello Monument

Community Asks Obama to Lay Wreath at Montebello Monument

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

LOS ANGELES-On Thursday, April 21 at 3 p.m., Armenian Americans from
throughout Southern California and across the American and Armenian
political spectrums will join together for a public protest calling
upon President Obama to honor his broken campaign pledge to recognize
the Armenian Genocide, reported the Armenian National Committee
of America.

The demonstration, organized by the Armenian Genocide Community Task
Force, will be held outside the President’s first major fundraiser in
Southern California for the “Obama Victory Fund 2012,” at the Sony
Studios located at 10202 W. Washington Boulevard in Culver City,
California. Buses will transport protestors starting at 1:30 p.m.
from St. Mary’s Church in Glendale, Rose & Alex Pilibos School in
Hollywood, Ferrahian High School in Encino and the North Hollywood
Armenian Apostolic Church: 13050 Vanowen St. North Hollywood.

“California’s Armenian American community is eager to see President
Obama in Los Angeles,” stated ANCA Western Region Chairman Andrew
Kzirian, Esq. “With the President’s 2012 reelection effort now under
way, the Armenian American community will remind him of the profound
moral and serious geopolitical costs of his decision to break his
promise to clearly and unequivocally recognize the Armenian Genocide,”
added Kzirian. “In these days leading up to the President’s third April
24th commemoration of this crime, we ask nothing more than that he live
up to his own commitments to bring an end to his Administration’s
complicity in Turkey’s denials. There is no better way to begin
this process than for President Obama to visit the Armenian Genocide
Memorial in Montebello and pay tribute to the victims and survivors
of this still unpunished crime.”

President Obama’s trip to Southern California comes on the eve of
April 24th, the international day of commemoration of the Armenian
Genocide. Armenian Americans have urged the President to visit
the Armenian Genocide Memorial in Bicknell Park in Montebello. The
Genocide memorial, constructed in 1965, has been the site of annual
commemorative programs, attracting tens of thousands to mark this
crime against humanity. In 1969, California Governor Ronald Reagan
gave a rousing 15-minute speech at the memorial, stating “Today, I
humbly bow in memory of the Armenian martyrs, who died in the name of
freedom at the hands of Turkish perpetrators of Genocide.” On April
22, 1981, President Reagan recognized the Genocide in Proclamation
4838, which proclaimed April 26-May 3 as “Days of Remembrance of
Victims of Holocaust.” The proclamation stated, “Like the genocide
of the Armenians before it, and the genocide of the Cambodians which
followed it and like too many other such persecutions of too many
other peoples-the lessons of the Holocaust must never be forgotten.”

In a series of letters and statements issued as Senator and candidate,
President Obama pledged clearly and unequivocally that he would end
U.S. complicity in Turkey’s genocide denial and properly recognize
this crime against humanity. In a January 18, 2008, statement, in the
days leading up to the Super Tuesday Primary in California, he stated
“As President, I will recognize the Armenian Genocide.”

The complete set of Senator Obama’s statements on the Armenian Genocide
can be found here.

Despite repeated opportunities to honor his pledge, President Obama
instead chose to promote the ill-fated Turkey-Armenia Protocols, an
effort which has emerged as the latest tactic in Turkey’s campaign
to undermine international affirmation of this crime. The Obama
Administration then went on to oppose Armenian Genocide legislation,
H.Res.252, which was adopted by the House Foreign Affairs Committee
over the President’s objections. The measure was ultimately not brought
to a vote on the House floor by the Democratic leadership, despite the
support for its passage by a bipartisan majority of Representatives.

The United Armenian Council has planned an outstanding program for
the commemoration of the 96th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide,
at Martyrs Monument in Montebello’s Bicknell Park on Saturday, April
23, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The public has been informed of the details of the program through
press releases and TV interviews. The participation of several Federal,
State, City, and local officials is anticipated. As in previous years,
Homenetmen and AGBU scouts will participate in flag ceremonies. For
the first time, the choir of the Armenian Society of Los Angeles,
conducted by Maestro Michael Avedissian, will perform.

This year Easter coincides with Armenian Genocide Memorial Day,
April 24, a historical coincidence characterized by ideological
and symbolic significance. As Christ was resurrected from his tomb,
similarly the Armenian nation has risen from its ashes. Influenced
by these dual ideologies of divine and human reflections, the United
Armenian Council, responding to our religious leaders’ call, considers
the main theme of the commemoration “The Armenian Nation’s Rebirth
and Redemption.”

Argentine-Armenian attorney Federico Hairabedian

In addition, the United Armenian Council has invited this year a
very special guest, Attorney Federico Hairabedian from Argentina,
to be the keynote speaker. He is the grandson of genocide survivor
Krikor Hairabedian who lost 50 members of his family during
theã~@~@Turkish-state organized genocide. In 2000, he filed a lawsuit
against Turkey which ended 10 yearsã~@~@later with great success. The
Argentine Federal Court on April 1, issued the following verdict:
“The Turkish state committed Genocide against the Armenian Nation
during 1915-1923 period, killing over one and half million Armenians.”

All Armenians are invited to attend this special commemorative
program on Saturday, April 23, at the Armenian Genocide Monument
in Montebello. Let us show our respect to our martyrs, and let the
entire world know that we will continue our struggle for our demands
until Turkey acknowledges its guilt and accepts to pay reparations
to the Armenian people.

Starting 10 a.m., on April 23, buses will be available to transport
participants to the Montebello Monument from St. Mary’s Apostolic
Church in Glendale and Rose & Alex Pilibos Armenian School in
Hollywood.

Swedish Professor Says Many States Prefer Economic Ties With Turkey

SWEDISH PROFESSOR SAYS MANY STATES PREFER ECONOMIC TIES WITH TURKEY TO CONDEMNATION OF THE GENOCIDE

ARMENPRESS
APRIL 20, 2011
YEREVAN

YEREVAN, APRIL 20, ARMENPRESS: Turkey, like many other states, is
trying to touch upon the Armenian Genocide issue only within the
framework of historians, Swedish historian, professor of Uppsala
University Goran Gunner said at the “Armenian Genocide and the
Scandinavian Response” conference today.

“The Turkey’s experience to discuss the Armenian Genocide issue only
with historians is possible to understand. With it they are trying to
keep clean their face in front of the international community. But
committing genocide is not the case not to come into terms with and
not to condemn”, he said. “Such crimes must first be condemned and
then studied by historians”, Gunner noted.

In response to the question whether the European Union will tolerate
the membership of country accused in such grave crime, Goran Gunner
said this step will be against the norms adopted by the European
Union. “Europe is not united in this issue: a number of states
exclude the entrance of Turkey, the others encourage it. The issue is
political one and many states, who have deep economic relations with
Turkey close their eyes on the accusation on crime against humanity”,
the Uppsala University professor said.

Ombudsman Is Concerned Over Property Rights In Armenia

OMBUDSMAN IS CONCERNED OVER PROPERTY RIGHTS IN ARMENIA

Tert.am
20.04.11

Armenia’s Human Rights Defender has released a statement in which
he expresses his concerns over the situation with property rights in
the country.

In the statement published in the website of Armenia’s Human Rights
Office, Karen Andreasyan says that currently there are around twenty
lawsuits against Armenia filed at the European Court of Human Rights.

Out of all those lawsuits in case of four the court has ruled against
the Republic of Armenia.

“This is worrisome, first of all in terms of the protection of property
rights of the citizens of the Republic of Armenia,” he mentioned.

“But it is important also in the sense that such cases negatively
affect Armenia’s international prestige,” he said, adding that those
citizens whose rights are violated should immediately turn to the
relevant bodies, including the Ombudsman’s office.

In two other similar statements released early in the week Karen
Andreasyan referred to social rights and the right to peaceful
assembly.

Andreasyan conditionally divided the violations related to property
right in groups which refer to complaints against the State Committee
of the Real Property Cadastre at the Republic of Armenia (SXRPC),
improper implementation of official duties by the Judicial Acts
Compulsory Service which has not contributed to exercising of people’s
rights to property.
