FRENCH PEOPLE OPPOSE TURKEY’S EU ACCESSION – EUROPEAN MP

Majority of the French population opposes Turkey’s joining the EU,
members of the European Parliament Alexander Graf Lambsdorff said in
an interview with Today’s Zaman.

Commenting in anti-Turkish sentiments in French society ahead of
elections, Lambsdorff said one may hear about two issues: one related
to the Armenian question and the other to Turkey’s possible European
Union membership.

“On the Armenian question, everyone knows what the discussion is about,
and on the EU accession, a clear majority of the French population,
not just the leadership, is against Turkey’s accession.

So some politicians may choose to exploit those feelings by linking the
Armenian issue with EU accession, and therefore create an atmosphere
that makes it difficult for France and Turkey to rebuild a constructive
relationship,” he said.

L’Arche : le derapage de Pierre Nora (I) Info Collectif VAN –

edition des ” Rendez-Vous de l’Histoire “, President de l’association
” Liberte pour l’Histoire ” et membre de l’Academie francaise,
a derape en direct sur France-Inter le mercredi 12 octobre 2011,
a propos du genocide armenien, au micro de Bernard Guetta et Thomas
Legrand. Des propos hasardeux qui interpellent sur la legitimite de
l’historien a s’exprimer sur des sujets qu’il ne maîtrise visiblement
pas. Le Collectif VAN reagit sur le site de l’Arche, par une tribune
en deux parties.

CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS AGAINST GOVERNOR OF SYUNIK

The Special Investigative Service informs that proceedings have been
launched for the incident of the evening of November 14. The governor
of Syunik region, Surik Khachatryan nicknamed Liska, hit the business
lady Sylvia Hambardzumyan in the lobby of the Marriott Armenia Hotel.

Hambardzumyan told that the governor assaulted her.

Several days ago Sylvia Hambardzumyan held a press conference and
accused the governor of Syunik for stealing equipment worth millions
of dollars from the mine owned by her.

On November 14 the SIS launched proceedings after Sylvia
Hambardzumyan’s report. On November 15 Hambardzumyan was invited to
the SIS where she stayed for several hours.

The SIS informs that Sylvia Hambardzumyan was offered to undergo
a forensic examination but she refused, noting that the governor’s
assault caused pain but no bodily injuries.

Inquest is carried out under Article 118 of the Criminal Code. The
SIS also informed that Hambardzumyan was earlier invited to the SIS
following press reports on her November 10 press conference. Ms.

Hambardzumyan accused the governor during that press conference.

ARMENIA’S FINANCE MINISTER ASSURES THAT POVERTY IS NOT 60%

Armenia’s Finance Minister Vache Gabrielyan has dismissed allegations
that poverty reaches 60% in the country.

Speaking at the parliament on Tuesday, Gabrielyan also said that
there can be no stability in the country if the minimum salary is
32,500 drams ($approx 85).

“I assure you that poverty is not 60%. That is imagination,” said
Gabrielyan. “Stability does not mean that we may suddenly turn into
a rich country from a poor one.”

“That is another concept and category,” said Gabrielyan, pointing to
global economic-financial crisis which affects Armenia’s economy too.

“If in a rich country like US poverty may increase by 5-6% due to the
financial-economic crisis, if there is naturally such a development,
it cannot overstep RA [Republic of Armenia],” explained he.

Further, Gabrielyan said that there can be no talk about stability
if the minimum salary is 35,000 (approx. $85).

“How can we speak about stability, when the minimum salary is 32,500
drams, when the librarians receive abound 40,000 drams,” said Vache
Gabrielyan.

ARMENIAN CHURCH HISTORY BOOK PUBLISHED IN BRAILLE VERSION

Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin has initiated the creation of the
schoolbooks of History of the Armenian Church in the Braille version
for children with impaired eyesight.

The books were presented at a special ceremony at the Special School #1
on November 14 on the occasion of the International Day of the Blind.

The book is designed for schoolchildren at their 5th form.

The event was attended by the inspector of the Gevorgian Theological
Seminary, His Eminence Archbishop George Saroyan, who passed the
blessing of Catholicos Garegin II to those attending.

He highly rated the initiative, stressing that the book in the Braille
version was an urgent one for this layer of the society.

The event was attended also by representatives of the Centre for
Christian Upbringing at the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin, Armenia~Rs
Ministry of Education and Science and The Bible Society of Armenia.

The book is planned also to be published in Braille version for
other classes.

GERMAN TRAVELERS TALK ABOUT ANI WITH HEAVY HEART

PanARMENIAN.Net – German travelers talk about the ancient capital of
Armenia, Ani, with a heavy heart, an acknowledged Armenologist said.

As Armenian Studies Department Director at Salzburg University, Dr.
Jasmine Dum-Tragut told a PanARMENIAN.Net reporter, Germans, Austrians
have dedicated many works to Ani, despite the fact that only 5-6
written memoirs have been preserved to date.

Jasmine Dum-Tragut, a participant of international conference “Ani
as the political and civilization center of medieval Armenia” noted
that military officials, physicists, architects, and people of other
professions have written about the medieval capital.

The Armenologist has conducted his research for over a year and is
likely to continue it.

CONFERENCE IN YEREVAN DEDICATED TO 1050TH ANNIVERSARY OF ANI

A three-day conference on “Ani as a political and civilization center
of medieval Armenia” kicked off at the Armenian National Academy
of Sciences today. The event dedicated to the 1050th anniversary
of proclamation of Ani as the capital of Bagratuni Kingdom brought
together scholars from Armenia, Russia, France, Germany, Italy,
the United States and Austria.

A website in three languages dedicated to the 1050th anniversary of
Ani has been launched (). It provides information
about the city and depicts the photos of Ani.

Member of the National Academy of Sciences, historian Richard
Hovhannisian says that even today it’s impossible to visit the historic
places without the feeling pain.

President of the Academy of Sciences Radik Martirosyan referred to
the geopolitical and historical importance of the capital, as well as
its cultural and religious role. He noted, however, “that the Turkish
authorities spare no effort to distort the historic facts and erase
the Armenian trace.”

Australian scholar Jasmine Dum-Tragut, professor of the Salzburg
Institute of Eastern Christian Studies, has collected archive materials
about Ani of 18th and 19th centuries. The results of the study were
presented at today’s conference.

ALTAI ATTRACTS ARMENIAN BUSINESSMAN

Moscow-based businessman of Armenian origin Armen Shahinyan has asked
the United Russia (Yedìnaya Rossìya) party to propose his candidacy
as deputy in Russia’s Altai Krai (region).

Shahinyan was included in the ticket of the Liberal Democratic Party
of Russia during the previous State Duma elections.

Political analysts hold different opinions on businessman’s step and
wonder why he chose that remote region for his career.

The election is set for November 20.

The Armenian-Azerbaijani war was and remains a foreign concept in
Russian consciousness, much like the United States’ war in Iraq. They
know this, but no one sympathizes with anyone, said Russian political
analyst and professor of international law Oleg Kuznetsov in an
interview with Baku-based news source Vesti.az.

“With regards to the question of which side of the Karabakh conflict
Russian society sympathizes with, the answer would be something
like this: in general, Russia’s citizens are indifferent to this
international issue. Karabakh is not their problem.

“And if we talk about countering information in the scope of the
Karabakh conflict, in my opinion, it would be better if Azerbaijan
ceased ceased the smear campaign against attacks from Armenia and
carried on its own propaganda campaign. It would be more effective.

Otherwise, as history of the Soviet Union joining the Russian and
Azerbaijani peoples taught us, Baku will inevitably suffer defeat in a
‘cold’ or information war over Nagorno-Karabakh,” said the analyst.

EFI TO HOLD FIRST SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE IN ARMENIA

On the initiative of the Armenian Bone Marrow Donor Registry (ABMDR),
the European Federation for Immunogenetics (EFI) is to hold its first
scientific conference in Armenia, Nov. 19.

World-famous Europe-based experts in immunogenetics and transplantation
have applied for participation. Experts from the regional countries
have for the first time been invited.

The participants will discuss the latest discoveries in HLA
antigen-related diseases, transportation of stem cells and organs.

Armenian Minister of Health Harutyun Kushkyan, EFI President Ilias
Doxiadis and others will deliver welcoming speeches at the opening
ceremony.
