Armenia Fund telethon to air Nov. 24

YEREVAN-The Bureau of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation issued
a communique on Wednesday calling on all Armenians to take part in
fundraising activities of the Hayastan All-Armenian Fund. Below is
the translated text of the announcement:

The Hayastan All-Armenian Fund has already begun its annual fundraising
efforts in Armenia and the Diaspora. It will culminate in the telethon
that is scheduled to take place on November 24 in the United States.

This year’s proceeds, just like last year, will be allocated toward
the development of Armenia’s border villages and the Nagorno-Karabakh
Republic.

Pan-Armenian institutions such as the Armenia Fund, regardless of their
immediate and specific mission have a deep symbolic significance. Their
existence and stability are the real proof of Armenian unity and is
the unifying force for various segments of all Armenians.

At the same time, it is also important to emphasize the irrefutable
fact that the strengthening of the Republics of Armenia and Artsakh
is a pan-Armenian aspiration of our nation. The border villages
of Armenia and the Armenians of Artsakh are the guarantors of the
security and development of all of Armenia. Thus, investing in those
regions achieves a pan-Armenian objective.

Hence, we call on all Armenians to take part in great numbers and
generously in the fundraising effort of the Armenia Fund.

Who Supports Silva Hambarzumyan?

WHO SUPPORTS SILVA HAMBARZUMYAN?
Naira Hayrumyan

Lragir.am News

12:08:09 – 16/11/2011

A new situation is outlining in the Armenian economy – for the first
time in many years, business conflicts between major proprietors are
not solved “under the carpet” but publicly.

In fact, the business lady Silva Hambardzumyan had to turn to the
public to protect her interests. This was an almost secure step,
especially now when public opinion plays if not a deciding at
least a correctional role in politics. Now, Silva Hambardzumyan
certainly enjoys public support before the clarification of all the
circumstances.

It is not yet clear with the odious oligarchs, and they still think
that they can commit unlawful actions without punishment. But the
fact of launching criminal proceedings against the governor of Syunik
region of Armenia Surik Khachatryan proves the authorities can no
longer ignore public opinion.

There are, of course, no demonstrations in defense of Silva
Hambardzumyan but the society understands that a lot of things are
more complicated than it may seem at first sight. Most people doubt
that Hambardzumyan could exploit a mine for so many years and get
along with the authorities without a “roof”. It is obvious that she
is part of the system. But since she has turned to public support,
public opinion favored her. Perhaps, it is because she is the only
person who dared to unveil the anatomy of the “mining” system.

This is a very important trend, the threads of which extend up to
elections. Public opinion in Armenia was ignored because it played no
role in the election process which was based on completely different
rules, namely forgery, bribes, etc. But in the next election, public
opinion can play a decisive role.

Further investigation of Surik Khachatryan’s case will indicate
whether the authorities came to terms with public opinion gaining
strength. High-ranking police officials were sent behind the bars,
namely Margar Ohanyan, Hovhannes Tamamyan, but investigation of these
cases is not public because those arrested did not turn to the society
and their arrest became a form of scuffle behind the scenes.

True, according to a version, the authorities try to get rid of the
most odious oligarchs through Silva Hambardzumyan, Surik Khachatryan
and Samvel Alexanyan. The fact that this case became public and
covered by the television means the power needs the support of the
society in fighting the oligarchs.

Human Rights Activists Criticize Azerbaijan

HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS CRITICIZE AZERBAIJAN

Lragir.am News

10:47:31 – 16/11/2011

Amnesty International criticized Azerbaijan in connection with the
use of disproportionate force against protesters in March and April
of this year.

The organization’s report runs that the peaceful demonstrators
demanded democratic reforms from the authorities, but instead they
were arrested, as well as beaten. 17 people were sentenced to up to
3 years under arrest in Azerbaijan.

It is noted that the West failed to apply effective methods to provide
political freedom and human rights in Azerbaijan.

Human rights activists say the were excited about the events in the
Arab world and tried to demand reforms but the number of protesters
was not so big as to threaten the regime.

The report accuses the Azerbaijani authorities of criminalizing
peaceful demonstrations. Those who made online invitations to
participate in protests were identified and sentenced on the basis
of false accusations. Their trials lasted for only 10-15 minutes.

Amnesty International stresses that Baku threatened the representatives
of the mass media and human rights activists making it clear that
“any attempt to raise the public opinion against the ruling regime
will be prevented”.

Azerbaijani authorities have not commented on the report yet.

For Assaulting A Woman, Syunik Regional Governor Might Serve 2 Month

FOR ASSAULTING A WOMAN, SYUNIK REGIONAL GOVERNOR MIGHT SERVE 2 MONTHS IN PRISON

epress.am
11.16.2011 11:29

Armenia’s Special Investigative Service (SIS) has launched a criminal
case on charges of Article 118 (“Battery or committal of other
violent acts… is punished with a fine in the amount of up to 100
minimal salaries, or correctional labor for up to 1 year, or with
arrest for the term of up to 2 months”) based on a written testimony
by entrepreneur Silva Hambardzumyan who said that she was attacked
by Syunik marzpet (regional governor) Suren Khachatryan outside the
Armenia Marriott Hotel on Nov. 14.

According to a statement issued by the SIS, Hambardzumyan was offered
to get a doctor’s note but she declined to undergo an examination,
explaining that though she experienced pain from the attack, she did
not sustain any bodily injuries.

Note as well, that a statement was also issued by the Syunik regional
council on its official website, in which Suren Khachatryan denies
the allegations of battery.

“We consider it necessary to declare that this news is untrue: it is
a fabricated, absolute lie and defamation, directed against RA Syunik
marzpet Surik Khachatryan,” reads the statement.

The SIS, in turn, notes that Hambardzumyan was called in for
clarifications regarding statements she made at a Nov. 10 press
conference in which she alleged that Suren Khachatryan and his son
are drug addicts.

“He’s a well-known drug addict; if you don’t know, let me tell you.

His brother, son – they’re all drug addicts. His son was arrested
then released for his drug addiction,” she had said.

Previously, the entrepreneur had asserted that Khachatryan stole 102
million drams’ worth of equipment from the Litchqvaz-Tey mine, which
belonged to Hambardzumyan before the license for her Sipan 1 gold
mining company was revoked by authorities. Following the accusations,
Khachatryan publicly threatened to take Hambarzumyan to court, saying
that he purchased the equipment.

Arts & Entertainment: Armenian Musicians In Russia

ARMENIAN MUSICIANS IN RUSSIA
Olga Fyodorova

The Voice of Russia
Nov 15 2011

You may have noticed the abundance of Armenian names among Russia’s
musical celebrities, didn’t you?..

Spread all across the globe, the Armenian nation has spawned a flurry
of great names. Suffice it to mention the legendary German conductor
Herbert von Karajan, the French composer, conductor and singer Michel
Legrand, the crooner Charles Aznavour, also from France, the American
singer and actress Cher and the opera superstar Maria Gulegina. Who,
by the way, is widely considered Russian because she studied here
and started her stage career here in Russia.

Yes, Russia has launched to stardom many an outstanding Armenian
musician.

Aram Khachaturian came to Moscow shortly after finishing high school.

Entering the Biology department of Moscow University, he was then
turned on to classical music that eventually made him one of the
greatest composers of the past century…

Recognized as a classic already during his lifetime, Aram Khachaturian
had his music played all across the world. Melodious and perfectly
arranged, it was absolutely consonant with the European musical
standards while always retaining its traditional Armenian color
and intonation.

Spending more and half a century of his life in Russia and receiving
fundamental musical education here, Khachaturian always stayed true
to musical radiations of his people.

The Saber Dance from the Gayaneballet was his signature number…

Just like his Concerto for the Violin and Orchestra which he wrote
in 1940 for the great David Oistrakh. These days it is performed with
almost equal excellence by Armenian violinist Gaik Kazarian…

Host: Well, this guy is not yet 30, if my memory serves me right. Just
like Khachaturian before him, Gaik Kazaryan became a conservatory
student in Moscow and is now teaching at his alma mater. He is a
proud winner of prestigious international competitions in Moscow,
Paris and Poznan.

Another Armenian name we want to mention here is Alexander
Melik-Pashayev. An amazingly talented conductor, he became a winner
of national competition back in 1938. Before that, in 1931, he was
invited to the Bolshoi Theater where he worked more than three decades,
including nine as their chief conductor…

A larger than life figure, Melik Pashayev could have become a world
celebrity had it not been for the Iron Curtain Stalin had erected to
separate this country from the rest of the world. He was still allowed
to travel abroad staging a number of operas and ballets in Prague,
Ostrava and London and his opera recordings winning praise in France
and the United States.

Well, we didn’t mention the very excellent Armenian opera singers
who have shone on the Russian stage. Above all Pavel Lisitisian,
whose amazingly beautiful velvety baritone graced the Bolshoi’s
operas for almost three decades. A fan of world classics, Lisitsian
never missed a chance to try his hand or, rather, voice, singing
Oriental-tinged pieces. Like, for example, this beautiful romance by
Sergei Rachmaninoff…

Pavel Lisitsian had three children and they all followed in their
father’s footsteps. Just listen to this haunting duet by his daughters
Ruzanna and Karina. The way their voices blend together is absolutely
out of this world.

That was amazing! You know, Ruzanna and Karina Lisitsian learned much
from their father, which is natural, but also from their no-less famous
aunt Zara Dolukhanova, born Zaruyi Makaryan. Taking her husband’s last
name, she then changed to a Russian-sounding one. Zara Dolukhanova
spent most of her life as a National Radio lead singer in Moscow.

Zara Dolukhanova was a legendary singer making easy work of the
extremely complicated coloratura pieces by Rossini and Meyerber,
masterfully performing music by Old Masters and also premiering music
by modern composers, including by her fellow Armenian friend Mikael
Tariverdiyev.

Mikael Tariverdiyev made his debut in a Moscow as a composer with
a series of romances Zara Dolukhanova premiered in the mid-1950s. A
student of Aram Khachaturian’s, Tariverdiyev diligently penned ballets,
operas and piano and organ pieces but it was his film scores that
really made him famous…

Tariverdiev’s instantly recognizable music graces more than 130 flicks,
many of which owe their popularity to his melodies….

There is one more Moscow-based Armenian composer who brought classical
and pop music happily together. As you might have already guessed,
the fellow’s name is Arnaud Babadzhanian.

A conservatory graduate in Yerevan and Moscow where he was a
composition and piano major, Babadzhanian moved to Moscow at 35 and
devoted himself wholly to writing songs.

Even though Arnaud put to music exclusively Russian poems, his songs
always had a spicy sprinkle of oriental music which is probably
why they appealed so much to another scion of the Caucasus – Muslim
Magomayev who was so great singing Babadzhanian’s songs…

It is common knowledge that Azeris and Armenians have never been the
best of friends… However, an Armenian Babadzhanian and an Azeri
Magomayev were very good friends drawn together by their love for
music and Russia where they spent the better part of their lives.

BAKU: Azerbaijani Criticism Of Talysh Separatist’s Trip To Yerevan

AZERBAIJANI CRITICISM OF TALYSH SEPARATIST’S TRIP TO YEREVAN

news.az, Azerbaijan
Nov 15 2011

Azerbaijani politician Araz Alizade has said that Talysh separatist
Alikram Humbatov must be mad to attend a conference in Armenia.

“Alikram Humbatov must have completely lost his mind if he is taking
part in an anti-Azerbaijani event in Yerevan,” Alizade, co-chair of
the Social Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, told 1news.az.

“This man is not respected even by his relatives, not to mention all
the Talysh people who have never supported and will never support him,”
Alizade continued.

Former army officer Alikram Humbatov announced the creation of the
Talysh-Mughan republic in southeast Azerbaijan in the summer of 1993
and declared himself its president. The republic was short-lived
and Humbatov was sentenced to life imprisonment after Heydar Aliyev
came to power in 1995. Humbatov was pardoned in 2004, stripped of
Azerbaijani citizenship and moved to Holland.

“This man seems to have run out of money again and to want to
sell himself. But Armenians themselves are stupid if they think
that the likes of Humbatov and Fakhraddin Abbaszade represent the
Talysh people. So, this whole idea of the Armenians is worthless,”
Alizade said.

He said that the Talysh people had always defended Azerbaijani
statehood and that they had fought with dignity in Karabakh for the
territorial integrity of the Azerbaijani state.

“Humbatov and his clique were ignominiously expelled from Lankaran by
the people who rallied around President Heydar Aliyev,” Alizade said.

“Azerbaijan is a powerful state and all nations and nationalities
living here are true patriots of the Motherland.”

Humbatov is attending the second international conference on Talysh
studies, organized by Garnik Asatryan, editor-in-chief of the magazine
“Iran and the Caucasus” which is published in Boston. The conference
in Yerevan is thought to be supported by the Armenian secret service,
1news.az said.
