Strengthening international cooperation, mobilizing resources, and exchanging experience are essential to ensuring the effective and sustainable conservation of biodiversity, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze said at the COP17 Leaders’ Summit in Yerevan.

According to the Georgian prime minister, a priority until 2030 should be to translate the commitments made under the Convention on Biological Diversity into tangible and lasting achievements.

“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the United Nations and the Government of the Republic of Armenia for bringing us together under the theme ‘Leaders for Nature.’ This summit provides an important opportunity to reaffirm our shared responsibility and strengthen our collective commitment to protecting nature. Georgia’s natural heritage continues to play an important role in the country’s economic and social development. Healthy ecosystems and sustainable agriculture safeguard our water resources, attract visitors, and create opportunities for the growth of small businesses. Therefore, protecting them is not merely an environmental responsibility but an investment in enhancing economic competitiveness, creating jobs, and ensuring long-term prosperity. Shared ecosystems in the South Caucasus serve as a foundation for closer regional cooperation and sustainable development. Georgia is committed to working with its neighbors to protect this shared natural heritage,” Kobakhidze said.

The Georgian leader added that the summit provides an important opportunity to strengthen collective determination to achieve the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
