32-year-old detainee Ashot Badalyan has been on hunger strike for a month in the “Nubarashen” penitentiary. In this way, he expresses his protest against the judicial system. He demands to change the preventive detention and appeals against the two articles attributed to him: Article 155, Part 2 of the Criminal Code (murder of a close relative) and Article 335, Article 1 of the Criminal Code (illegal arms trafficking).

Ashot Badalyan’s advocate Hayk Harutyunyan Ashot Badalyan is not going to stop the hunger strike until his demand is met.

“I wrote to the General Prosecutor’s Office a few days ago, but I still haven’t received an answer. I received a response from the HRD office that a visit took place yesterday. The office also submitted in writing that they are monitoring the situation and regularly receive clarifications from the penitentiary regarding the state of health. Naturally, they have nothing to do with the substantive part of the case, this is in the domain of the courts and the prosecutor’s office.” 168.am–the lawyer conveyed to him.

According to him, during the preliminary investigation, the prosecutor’s office essentially stated its position, noting that the case is a particularly serious crime against a close relative under the articles of “murder” and “illegal weapons trafficking”.

To the question: How do you assess the state of health of your client, the lawyer answered that Ashot Badalyan is regularly provided with medical care in the penitentiary.

“Generally, when a person is on a hunger strike, and that is for a long time, they are kept in special conditions in the penitentiary, constantly visited by medical personnel. A few days ago, his health condition was assessed as satisfactory, but I was informed internally that his condition has worsened in recent days, he has signs of kidney and intestinal problems. The problems are gradually raising their head. When I visited Ashot two days ago, he had lost 20 kilograms of weight, and it was difficult for him to speak.

“My client has clearly stated that he will not leave the hunger strike until the restraining order is changed,” Hayk Harutyunyan emphasized.
