Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Turkey met on Wednesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly to discuss the normalization process between their two countries, as well as the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process.
A statement by Pashinyan’s office said that the two also discussed the progress on agreements reached toward the Armenia-Turkey normalization.
“Emphasis was placed on the importance of advancing the normalization process and the readiness to give fresh impetus to the relationship. In this regard, the parties deemed it necessary to consistently carry out work aimed at boosting trade and economic ties, establishing connections between business communities, and jointly restoring the historic Ani Bridge,” the statement said.
The sides also exchanged views on regional issues, with Pashinyan and Erdoğan reportedly emphasizing the “significant impact” of establishing peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan, on the development of regional cooperation.

In a statement, the Turkish presidency said that Erdoğan voiced support for “the normalization process with Armenia in the areas of bilateral trade and transportation” and praised “growing cooperation with Armenia in international organizations.” He was also reported to hail “reciprocal steps” taken by Armenia and Azerbaijan.
Despite agreements to negotiate for the normalization between Armenia and Turkey without preconditions, official Ankara continues to make the opening of its border with Armenia conditional on an Armenian-Azerbaijani peace deal acceptable to Azerbaijan. That means accepting Baku’s demands for a change of Armenia’s constitution and the opening of the corridor that would connect Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan and Turkey. There were no indications after Erdoğan’s latest talks with Pashinyan that Ankara will drop these preconditions.
In his remarks to the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Erdoğan stated that Turkey and Armenia have made progress in the process of normalizing relations.
“The process of normalizing relations between our country and Armenia is proceeding as planned,” Erdoğan said.
