Under pressure from Azerbaijan, Israel removed the issue of recognizing the Armenian Genocide from the Knesset agenda. As Haaretz has learned, Israeli officials assured their Azerbaijani counterparts that this issue would be removed from the Knesset agenda.
An Israeli source said that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu personally blocked the vote after a senior political adviser to the President of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijani President Aliyev’s adviser Hikmet Hajiyev) contacted his office.
The source said that the Israeli government’s decision to recognize the Armenian Genocide, approved last month, was not brought to a vote in the Knesset because of pressure from Azerbaijan on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Israel’s cabinet unanimously recognized the Armenian Genocide on June 28, 2026, but the subsequent Knesset vote required for it to become official state policy was removed from the agenda under pressure from Azerbaijan. With the Knesset in recess and elections set for October 27, the issue is unlikely to be resolved anytime soon, remaining more a reversible government resolution than established policy.
