U.S. President Donald Trump said American forces carried out heavy strikes against Iran overnight in honour of three U.S. service members killed in the Middle East, Sky News reported.
“We hit Iran very hard last night in honour of three great patriots,” Trump told reporters during a briefing.
According to Sky News, the U.S. military said it had completed a ninth consecutive night of strikes against Iran.
Explosions were reported in several parts of the country. Tehran, for its part, launched retaliatory attacks against U.S. allies in the Middle East, including Kuwait and Jordan.
The U.S. military said one American service member was killed in an Iranian attack in northern Iraq on July 18. The incident occurred one day after an attack on a U.S. military base in Jordan killed two American service members, while another remains missing.
U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the service member in Iraq was killed during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian attack drone. Another service member was injured in the incident.
