Asbarez: Azerbaijan’s Exports to Armenia Exceed $17 Million in First Half of

When the first shipment of Azerbaijani fuel arrived in Armenia last December, Armenia’s leaders, including Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan hailed it as one of the first steps in establishing peace with their neighbors and spoke of prospects of exporting goods to Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan’s State Customs Committee reported on Wednesday that from January to June of this year, $17,128,600 million of goods were exported to Armenia. This figure accounted for 0.1 percent of Azerbaijan’s total exports, which exceed $24 billion.

Yet Armenia’s exports to Azerbaijan amounted to zero dollars.

Back in March, Azerbaijan announced that $960 worth of goods were imported from Armenia, an announcement later denied by Armenia’s trade and economy officials.

“We are conducting business instead of war,” exclaimed Armenia’s Economy Minister Gevork Papoyan when he welcomed the first fuel delivery from Azerbaijan back in December.

In January, Pashinyan explained that fuel export process was not a trade deal between Yerevan and Baku, but rather a deal between Armenia-owned businesses and fuel providing companies, promising that Armenian consumers would benefit from lower prices at the gas pump—or the liquefied natural gas stations.

Both Pashinyan and Papoyan also emphasized that Yerevan and Baku were discussing a “list” of possible products that may be exported to Azerbaijan. Thus far, however, the Armenian government has not registered any revenue from such transactions, because they do not exist.
