Speaker of Parliament Alen Simonyan congratulated Vice Speaker and fellow Civil Contract party member Ruben Rubinyan on his nomination as Speaker in the next legislature.

“I congratulate my colleague Ruben Rubinyan on being selected by the board of the Civil Contract party as the candidate for Speaker of the 9th convocation of the National Assembly. I am confident that he will honorably continue the work we started together for the Republic of Armenia,” Simonyan said in a post on social media.

Rubinyan, a senior member of the ruling Civil Contract party who is currently Vice Speaker in the outgoing parliament and Armenia’s Special Representative for Normalization with Türkiye, was on Thursday chosen by the party board as a candidate for Speaker of Parliament in the next legislature, which will be formed as a result of the recent elections.

The party board chose Rubinyan in a closed vote over incumbent Speaker Alen Simonyan and majority leader Hayk Konjoryan.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
