This is a long overdue and very welcome process

Israel’s Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has announced that he will submit a draft resolution on the recognition of the Armenian Genocide to the government for approval.

According to the reports of the Israeli media, in the background of the continuous deterioration of relations between Israel and Turkey, official Jerusalem may recognize the Armenian Genocide in the near future.

If such a resolution is indeed presented and approved by the government and the Knesset, it may signal significant changes in Israel’s regional policy.

The experience of my parliamentary work and numerous contacts proves that for decades the issue of official recognition of the Armenian Genocide in Israel remained a subject of discussion and was mostly postponed due to political, economic and diplomatic relations with Turkey. The current crisis in that relationship may be a cause for recognition.

However, it is important to consider that there are several stages between the statement of the Israeli Foreign Minister and the actual recognition by the State of Israel.

1. Presentation of the draft resolution.
2. Its discussion and approval by the Government and the Knesset.
3. Further possible decisions of other state structures.

Therefore, the statement made at this moment is not about an already established recognition, but about an initiative that may later lead to the official recognition of the Armenian Genocide.

This is a long overdue and very welcome process.
