The General Prosecutor’s Office of Armenia has started a criminal prosecution against the former commanders of four army corps of the armed forces, within the framework of the proceedings related to the events of March 1-2, 2008.

According to the materials of the case examined by the anti-corruption committee, former high-ranking military personnel PP, VG, HB and LE are suspected of assisting the former Minister of Defense Mikayel Harutyunyan and other high-ranking officials, including Robert Kocharyan, Seyran Ohanyan and Yuri Khachaturov in the transfer of official powers.

The investigation claims that the commanders carried out an obviously illegal order, which led to serious consequences for state and public security.

The events of March 1, 2008 were the tragic climax of mass protests against the results of the presidential elections in Yerevan. The brutal dispersal of the opposition tent camp and the ensuing clashes left 10 people dead, hundreds injured, and the country plunged into political crisis.
