Yerevan /Mediamax/. The labor rights situation in Armenia is not in
line with the European Social Charter in 12 out of 17 provisions.

The annual report of European Social Charter published by the European
Committee of Social Rights today reads this.

According to the report, Armenia is in line only with “right to just
conditions of work: public holidays with pay” and “annual holiday
with pay” conditions.

The situation in Armenia is not line in 12 out of 17 provisions
including: “reasonable working hours”, “weekly rest period”,
“information on the employment contract”, “increased remuneration for
overtime work”, “limits to wage deductions”, “right to conciliation
and arbitration and collection action (including strikes)”.

In respect of the other 3 situations related to elimination of risks
in dangerous or unhealthy occupations, non-discrimination between
women and men with respect to remuneration and right to bargain
collectively: negotiation procedures, the Committee needs further
information in order to examine the situation.

At the same time, the Committee considered that the absence of the
information requested amounts to a breach of the reporting obligation
entered into by Armenia under the Charter. The Committee requested
the Armenian government to remedy that situation by providing this
information in the next report.

Armenia ratified the European Social Charter in January 2004.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
