EU Calls Upon Armenian Authorities To Take Prompt And Decisive Actio

EU CALLS UPON ARMENIAN AUTHORITIES TO TAKE PROMPT AND DECISIVE ACTION

18:11, 16.12.2014

The European Union Delegation issued a statement on Tuesday in
connection with the recent cases of violence against civic activists
and opposition politician.

The statement issues in agreement with the EU Member States’ Heads
of Mission in Armenia runs as follows:

“The EU Delegation expresses its concern at recent incidents in Yerevan
involving attacks on civic activists and opposition politicians. The
EU Delegation welcomes the statement by the Ombudsman and his call
for an effective and impartial investigation.

The EU Delegation calls upon the Armenian authorities to take prompt
and decisive action to bring the perpetrators to justice without delay.

The EU Delegation reiterates its concern at the absence of results
regarding the investigations into similar incidents of 2013. The
perception of ineffective law enforcement is raising concerns among
Armenian civil society, Human Rights Defenders and international
observers and risks nurturing a sense of impunity in Armenia.

The EU Delegation recalls that respect for democratic principles,
human rights and fundamental freedoms remain essential elements in
the European Union’s bilateral agenda with Armenia, as agreed in the
joint statement made at the Eastern Partnership summit in Vilnius
last November”

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
