Armenia’s membership in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) is likely
to have both its advantages and disadvantages, an economist has said,
stressing the importance of estimating the impact on the different
classes of the society.

At a news conference on Monday, Vilen Khachatryan pointed out to the
high price index on the post-Soviet area, noting that the inflation
risks are particularly high in Russia.

“Armenia is in the best positions,” he said, citing the International
Monetary Fund’s estimates (which predict up to 3.8% inflation rate
in the country by 2015).

The economist said he expects Eurasian integration to increase Armenian
businessmen’s competitive advantages, adding that the inflation risks
will be real in case they do not use the chance.

Addressing the issue, President of the Consumer Consulting Center
Karen Chilingaryan said he expects more problems as a result of the
unchanged customs tariffs.

“Can we develop the economy enough in five years not to suffer from
the increased customs tariffs?” he said, considering inflation the
most likely scenario.

As for the import of cars, Chilingaryan said he thinks that buying
cars from the Russian Federation would be more advantageous.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
