The Armenian Catholic archbishop of Aleppo, Syria’s largest city,
has told the Fides news agency that rebel rocket fire has damaged
his residence and a Catholic school.

“It was a pretty powerful missile which damaged the school and one
wing of the building, breaking the doors and shattering many windows,”
Archbishop Boutros Marayati told the Fides news agency. “Another
missile, less powerful, fell on our school yesterday.”

Despite the rocket attacks, Aleppo residents went to the polls to cast
their ballots in the June 3 presidential election. “All citizens are
for various reasons siding with [Bashar al-]Assad,” said Archbishop
Marayati. Assad, who has led the nation since 2000, won the election
with nearly 89% of the vote.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
