Armenians gather to remember genocide

Armenian Canadians gathered on Parliament Hill Thursday to commemorate
the 99th anniversary of the Armenian genocide.

Vana Foudoulian is one of many Armenian Canadians travelling from
Montreal for the rally; she came to Ottawa Wednesday to participate in
an overnight vigil held in front of the Turkish embassy.

“We’re just here to thank Canada for recognizing the genocide and
we’re asking the Turkish ambassador and Turkey to recognize the
genocide,” she said.

Representatives from Turkey also gathered on Parliament Hill Thursday;
they say the death of 1.5 million Armenians starting in 1915 should
not be considered genocide as Turkey lost just as many people before
and during the First World War.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
