ARMENIA’S UN VOTING ON CRIMEA DOES NOT THREATEN COUNTRY WITH SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES – POLITICAL SCIENTIST

YEREVAN. – Armenia’s position at the UN voting on the Ukrainian
resolution merely showed that external pressures were exerted on
the country.

Regional Studies Center Director, political analyst Richard Giragosian
stated the aforementioned on Tuesday.

He noted that even though Armenia has strong positions on foreign
policy just like before, the country is facing a difficult situation.

As per the analyst, Armenia’s stance at the UN does not threaten the
country with serious consequences, since the main pressure of the
international community is aimed at Russia.

“Although Armenia has left itself a narrower field to maneuver, thanks
to the mistakes by Turkey and Azerbaijan, the country has succeeded in
maintaining its strong positions in foreign policy,” Giragosian noted.

Caucasus Institute Director, political scientist Alexander Iskandaryan
agreed with Richard Giragosian, and added that Armenia’s position at
the UN voting will not result in any consequences.

“Armenia itself decided how to vote [and] in consideration of the
degree of influence of external forces and the existing realities. The
Russian party’s influence on this matter was solely one of the reasons
for the Armenian party’s exhibiting such a position,” Iskandaryan
specifically stated.

Armenia was among the eleven countries that voted against the UN
General Assembly resolution which declares invalid Crimea’s recent
referendum calling for joining Russia. In addition, 58 countries
abstained from voting on this resolution, whereas 100 countries
voted in its favor. The UN General Assembly resolutions, however,
are merely consultative.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
