Estonia To Support Prevention Of Children’s Ill-Treatment In Armenia

ESTONIA TO SUPPORT PREVENTION OF CHILDREN’S ILL-TREATMENT IN ARMENIA

TALLINN, Mar 25, BNS – Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is
supporting in the framework of development cooperation with more than
86,000 euros activities for preventing and reducing the ill-treatment
of children in Armenia, and for raising the quality of education for
children without parental care or with insufficient parental care.

The ministry is supporting a project of the Estonian Women’s
Studies and Resource Center (ENUT) for preventing and reducing the
ill-treatment of children in Armenia with 82,699 euros, spokespeople
for the ministry told BNS. Children make up 27 percent of Armenia’s
population and different forms of ill-treating children are a problem
that is extremely widespread in the country.

According to Foreign Minister Urmas Paet, Estonia wants to support
Armenia’s civil society through development cooperation. “One important
area is guaranteeing the rights of children as the most defenseless
and vulnerable group in the society and securing their education,”
Paet said. “With projects supported by Estonia, Armenian teachers
and psychologists will be educated on the topics of ill-treatment of
children and human trafficking, and the schooling of children without
parental care or with insufficient parental care will be individualized
using modern methods of information and telecommunication technology,”
he added.

In Armenia there is a big shortage of trained psychologists and
social workers, and training them is one of the goals of ENUT’s
project. In the course of the project, the awareness of social workers,
psychologists and teachers on children’s ill-treatment on the internet
will be raised.
