PROPOSAL OF SETTING UP COMMISSION FOR INVESTIGATING MARCH 1, 2008 EVENTS PUT ON ARMENIAN PARLIAMENT’S AGENDA

YEREVAN, February 24. /ARKA/. Armenian National Assembly will discuss
at the current four-day session the proposal of setting an ad hoc
commission for investigating the March 1, 2008 events in Yerevan,
Parliament Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan said on Monday.

After the 2008 presidential election, Armenian opposition headed by
the first president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, who lost the then race for
presidency to his rival, Serzh Sargsyan, staged protests saying the
election had been fraudulent and the results had been rigged. The
rallies ended in clashes between protesters and law enforcements. As
a result, ten were killed and some 200 injured. Many were arrested.

Abrahamyan said that one third of MPs have come up with this proposal,
which was put on the session’s agenda.

This will be the second commission investigating the events. The first
one was set up on June 16, 2008 in compliance with the PACE demand.

The commission was presented its report at the parliamentary session
held on September 16 and 17, 2009.

In May 2013, the National Assembly declined a proposal to set up
another commission to shed light on that murky affair. –0—
