Ealing marks Holocaust Memorial Day

Children from four local schools were among those who joined a moving
ceremony to mark Holocaust Memorial Day in Ealing on Monday, 27
January.

Leader of Ealing Council, Councillor Julian Bell and Ealing’s Mayor,
Councillor Kamaljit Dhindsa led the ceremony with Rabbi Janet Burden
from Ealing Synagogue. Pupils from Hambrough, Beaconsfield, Tudor and
North primary schools took part. Other attendees included Deputy Mayor
of Ealing, Councillor Tej Ram Bagha, councillors, guests and members
of the public.

A minute’s silence was held and a tree was planted in memory of all
those around the world who lost their lives as a result of acts of
genocide, including victims of the Nazi Holocaust and all other
victims of persecution, genocide and torture around the world,
including those in Armenia, Assyria, Cambodia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Sri
Lanka, Rwanda and Darfur

Councillor Bell reminded people that it was 69 years to the day since
Soviet soldiers finally liberated Auschwitz concentration camp in
south-west Poland. He also urged people to take a stand against
discrimination and said: “I also hope we will pass the lessons of the
past on to our children, so that they too will challenge persecution
and continue to commemorate this day for years to come.”
