CHESS: ARONIAN SCORES FIRST WIN AT BILBAO GRAND SLAM

Armenia’s Levon Aronian, playing with black pieces, beat France’s
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in Round 4 of the Grand Slam’s 6th tournament
in Bilbao, Spain, on Thursday.
This is the first victory scored by the top Armenian grandmaster at
the four-man round-robin tournament known as Final Masters 2013.
In the other game of the day Azeri GM Shakhriyar Mamedyarov and
Michael Adams from the United Kingdom played a draw.
In the current standings Aronian and Adams lead with 6 points each,
followed by Vachier-Lagrave (4 points) and Mamedyarov (3 points).
According to the rules at the Bilbao competition, 3 points are awarded
for a win and 1 point for a draw, with no points received for a loss.
The Grand Slam tournament continues on Friday with Aronian (with black
pieces) playing against Adams and Mamedyarov taking on Vachier-Lagrave.
On October 12, the last day of the competition, Aronian (with white
pieces) will play against Mamedyarov and Vachier-Lagrave will play
against Adams.
