Criminal case against Syunik governor’s son suspended

14:34 – 07.09.13

The Armenian Defense Ministry’s Investigative Service has suspended
the prosecution launched earlier this year in connection with the
scandalous murder near the house of Surik Khachatryan, the former
governor of the southern region of Syunik.

The ex-governor’s son, Tigran Khachatryan, and a guard, Zarzand
Nikoghosyan faced charges over the gun attack that led to the death of
a former mayoral candidate early in June. Both were in detention
during the inquest.

According to a press release by the Ministry, the Investigative
Service made a decision to release them earlier on Saturday after it
was found and proven that the two men resorted to proportionate
defense measures during the attack.

The decision is subject to appeal within seven days after its publication.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
