Armenian Chamber of Lawyers rep. proposes reforms

Armenian Chamber of Lawyers rep. proposes reforms

14:36 – 24.08.13

Tigran Atanesyan, a Chamber of Lawyers representative running in the
upcoming election, says a keynote provision in his platform is the
requirement to ensure the protection of lawyers.

`The Chamber has to protect its lawyer, ensuring the transparency of
financial activities. The Chamber has to assist young lawyers in
starting their work; it has to take a full oversight of the public
defender’s office and introduce transparency in the decision-making,’
the lawyer said in comments to Tert.am.

Considering the proposed reforms vitally essential, Atanesyan stressed
the importance of the Chamber’s neutrality to politics and readiness
to keep its members’ concerns under permanent attention. `The Chamber
must never intervene in the activities of a lawyer, especially when
the lawyer works within the law, performing his or her professional
duty. But whenever lawyers face persecution, it has to offer its
protection,’ he noted.

Asked what he thinks about his chances in the election, Atanesyan
answered he is more focused on ideas rather than individual
candidates. `I think the ideas I propose must be in line with the
ideas of the vast majority of lawyers,’ he said.

“I should like to see any power of the world destroy this race, this small tribe of unimportant people, whose wars have all been fought and lost, whose structures have crumbled, literature is unread, music is unheard, and prayers are no more answered. Go ahead, destroy Armenia . See if you can do it. Send them into the desert without bread or water. Burn their homes and churches. Then see if they will not laugh, sing and pray again. For when two of them meet anywhere in the world, see if they will not create a New Armenia.” - WS
